USC Morning Buzz: Welcome To Coaching Staff Roulette

1966.USC.STAFFIn case you were away for the weekend, this was the first of a new series, where I randomly pick a USC coaching staff of the past and look at its accomplishments. One reason is because every time someone gets hired at USC (like Lane Kiffin) they say they are hiring the best staff in America. And they do not. Well, let’s see how the staff of the past compared.

Here’s a look at some of the 1965 coach staff: Mike Giddings was the head coach at the University of Utah in 1966-67 and also became head coach of the Hawaii World Football League team. Craig Fertig, a former USC player, became the head coach at Oregon State from 1976-79. Charlie Hall became the director of player personnel for the Houston Oilers.

Mel Hein was the NFL’s MVP in 1938 as a center. A center! An eight-time all-pro center, he was a charter member of the NFL Hall of Fame in 1963. Imagine that background for a coach today. Jim Stangeland, a former USC player, led Long Beach State and Long Beach City College to its greatest success, including a national title at Long Beach City in 1964.

Dave Levy was just inducted into the USC Hall of Fame and considered one of the greatest, if not greatest, assistant coaches in school history. He also was an offensive coordinator in the NFL.

And of course, there’s Marv Goux, who is simply the most inspirational coach in USC history, not to mention a former player.

  1. “….every time someone gets hired at USC (like Lane Kiffin) they say they are hiring the best staff in America.”…..So who else besides Kiffin said this?…..If I happened to miss it, then I apologize…. otherwise, this is simply another boring and tedious platform created by Scott to take pot shots at Kiffin…..

    • Thanks for another boring and tedious rah rah post defending the status quo, Garry Bleauz.

      • Only a dolt like you would find this sort of thing enlightening……why live in the past?….. how about some insight on what’s happening TODAY?

        • The next time you post something enlightening will be the first time, Garry Bleauz. Please take your anti-psychotic meds.

          • I don’t mind strolling down memory lane, once in a while, but not when it’s obviously being used as a vehicle to serve Scott’s childish motives….when does one let go?…in Scott’s case, NEVER…..and idiots like you tolerate this…..

          • Rumor has it Scottie is still mad at the OBGYN for using cold tongs during his delivery.

          • Cold tongs?… I thought that perhaps a toilet plunger was used, considering his shiny smooth chrome dome……

          • Speaking of idiots, shall we post your tedious “SC Trivia” posts again?

          • You and the trolls are the only ones who have complained about this, so far…. if any one of the more serious posters on this blog has an issue with the trivia, then I will refrain from sharing them in the future….

          • Just because you couldn’t answer the trivia question, “What does U.S.C. stand for?”, please don’t be a poor sport….

          • Your question, “Why is Pat Haden the greatest AD of all time?” was a bit over the top.

    • Steve Sarkisian said it the loudest…lol… he made that statement during his press conference right after he was hired. And he eventually looked like a fool when all of the top assistant coaches turned him down, more then once. So he had to settle for who ever was willing to work with him,and his only top hire was Offensive line coach Tim Drevno, who was also a personal friend, but he decided to leave after one year under Sarkision.

      • Then I’ll trust your memory, Fred…..one thing that can’t be denied though is the ability of this coaching staff to recruit top flight players… developing them remains to be seen, but I have faith…. one of the few, apparently….

        • I hope Steve Sarkisian turns out to be a great coach, but I still have questions.

          • I agree with you….many unanswered questions still linger…..for example, his halftime adjustments have been abysmal, so far…..

      • For the record, and for whatever it’s worth, Sark’s actual quote was: “I’m fired up to have Johnny, Keith and Peter join the staff, as well as keeping Tee on board,” said Sarkisian. “We’re on the right path in putting together one of the best coaching staffs in America.”

        • And time will tell if he has or not, but on paper he hasn’t . So let’s wait and see if not having big name assistants, really make a difference.

          • Many of the big name assistants seem to be former head coaches (Gene Chizik and Will Muschamp), or current head coaches who are better off being an assistant (Norm Chow)…….. who would all probably be a potential threat to a young/insecure head coach like Sark….

  2. zero access to the head coach and zero self esteem, just rents and the remaining sock puppets… pathetic.

  3. Why are all of my comments removed? Gar-ga-mel clearly reads the comments, gets butt hurt, and deletes what he wants to. Talk about being a Rah-Rah.

    • So that’s where that thing gotroy22 gets the whole smurf meme from – funny stuff. As they say, if the shoe fits…

        • That’s certainly their prerogative ……. and I don’t need your sympathy…

          • Sure you do, Garry Bleauz. You are a laughing stock with your Grantland Rice comments.

      • Hi stalker. How was Memorial Day Weekend at the nuthouse? Did they let you go outside for arts and crafts with the other crazies?

        • Hi Golly_Nerd. How was St Louis? Did you and BM have fun despite your latest Best Wookie Costume loss?

  4. GEEZ LOUISE!!! even tho wolfman HEAPS PRAISE on the former trOXan staff, the thin-skinned overly DEFENDIVE trOXans get all butt-hurt!!!

Get this STRAIGHT, Dummies…wolfman prints the TRUTH, good or BAD!

there just happen to be lots of BAD lately!!!

    #ItsLikeThat

    • Scott is extremely bitter about that time kiffin tried to suspend him from practice. He hasn’t written a nice thing about kiffin since then.

  5. Meanwhile… USC is ranked #3 preseason by Danny Kanell. Although this is great PR for recruiting, USC should realistically be ranked around #15.

    • Meanwhile the Rachel Maddow of Inside USC covers the brainless rah rah beat for Garry Bleauz who is on the road to Lake Elsinore.

  6. If hiring top assistant coaches are truly part of a puzzle for success, then Steve Sarkisian is in trouble, so he’s either going to prove that it’s a myth, or he will fall flat on his face.
