USC Morning Buzz: Too Close For Comfort In Philadelphia?

Matt Barkley drew national attention after an Eagles practice this week when he said “he’s not taking my reps on the field,” referring to new quarterback Tim Tebow.  “He’s an arm we need for the team, with G.J. (Kinne) making the move to receiver.

“Tim’s just one of us. He’s trying to make the team just like we all are. It hasn’t effected my approach to how I feel the team thinks of me or how I’m going out to compete every day.”

I don’t think Barkley dislikes Tebow, he just wants to compete. Besides, shouldn’t he admire Tebow? Tebow won an AFC West title with Denver. He won two national titles at Florida. He won a Heisman Trophy. USC talked a great game about Barkley and those last two but they never came close to happening.

  1. Sort of like the LA Daily News, talks a big game about their “reporters” but hasn’t had ONE in YEARS.

  2. Barkley represented USC during sanctions and never complained – what’ your excuse Scottie?

      • It’s an odd post, even by Scott’s warped standards. …he starts off with Barkley’s controversial comment on Tebow, then he circles around and criticizes USC for over hyping Barkley and he calls Barkley an underachiever……the Lake Elsinore sun must be getting to him. …

    • Barkley also came back for his senior year, when he could have taken the easy way out and left early to the NFL….

    • Barfly never had to because every other SUCCster was whining about the mean old NCAA sanctions.

      • What, me mad? Actually I was disappointed in Barkley’s football career and thought he never developed enough (or he reached his ceiling and was over-hyped coming out of high school). But Barkley gets A+ grades for being a decent person and carrying the torch during a difficult time.

As usual, Scottie is missing the story – it’s about Tebow following Sanchez around and how his joining the Eagles effects Sanchez.

    • The list is too long…it starts with his birth and ends with being relegated to the DN blogger today

  3. Too bad Wolfie can’t even talk a good, let alone a great game. That’s supposed to be his job.

  4. This one sounds personal on your side Wolf. That was a kick in the family jewels.

    • Isn’t Matt suppose to be this big Christian? Why wouldn’t he be accepting of a fellow Christian in Tim Tebow?

      • Nothing un-Christian in what Barkley is quoted. He’s doing his job as best he can, Tebow is another player there to help the team. Of course quotes can be taken out of context and we don’t know the relationship between Matt and Tim. That might be a more interesting and positive post, but we wouldn’t want that.

        • Barfly wants to protect his seat at the end to the eagle bench. Has Barfly’s shoulder healed yet?

          • Your obsession continues… You should worry about your own vaunted baseball/softball teams. According to LA Times, your women’s softball team was bounced yesterday and your “men’s” team has to win three in a row to advance.

          • Owns will be at the bar watching the men’s team. He doesn’t care who wins as long as the booze keep flowing.

          • Hey ugly rents the rose bowl, just worry about your “qb” that was drafted like 5 or 6th in the draft. He will be lucky to get a spot on the injured reserve list or the practice squad. Also worry about your ruins losing to Cal State Bakersfield.

      • Well. Barkley just needs to put up or shut up. I’m sure it wasn’t a direct remark to Tebow and i think we would all assume there’s no bad blood between them. We don’t know. Maybe there is. Still Barkley has to keep his mind and comments to himself and play ball. I’m hoping Barkley has at least his opportunity before it’s all said and done. Barkley must’ve Big Leagued Wolf at sometime for this journalistic cr@p.

        • I don’t think the Eagles are a good fit for Matt. I was hoping they’d release him so he could have a chance on a team with a more traditional pro offense.

          • The spread and spread QBs are gonna be the norm in the NFL pretty soon. They all admire what chip kelly can do with a pro- spread

          • I think not sas. The pro style offense protects the QB best.

Only a desperate team pays a QB $20 million a year and runs an offense injurious to their QB.

          • I hate the spread. And these lucky spread QB’s who look good and are worthless in a pro offfense. It’s just my opinion.

          • I agree. The Spread was born out of necessity for schools like Oregon and Arizona who couldn’t compete straight up against teams like USC that run conventional pro style offenses.

  5. The day the average fan uses his common sense, as opposing to reading media hype that’s usually produced by writers that don’t know any more about football then themselves, will be the day they stop putting no talent quarterbacks on pedestals . Tim Tebow was a system Quarterback that produced college numbers, nothing more, and Matt Barkley has a weak arm, and will never be a full time NFL starter. Truth hurts, don’t it ? I’m a realist, and I don’t care if the player, or coach is on my team or not, I’m going to use the eye test, and common sense.

    • Fred I’m not saying you’re wrong on Tebow. I never was a fan, but in the college game Tebow was a football player. True he was a QB in a system that was fit for his ability. But he was the ultimate warrior on the field. He had that “Joe Montana” or even “Leinart” feel. I don’t think hes a true Qb, but in college a Tim Tebow QB is still QB.

  6. The most coveted jobs in any sports room is to be designated as a columnist. One is no longer tied to one team or school rather now there is freedom to witness different sporting events and – because of one’s skill – entices the reader to read the account.

People loved to rag on TJ Simers but everyone read him because he was infuriatingly insightful – everyone was in his free fire zone except ‘Wooden’ and ‘Scully’ – but everyone else had a target on their back.

Simers also had a good sense of what was amusing while also being infuriating.

The problem for you Scott is that USC is all you have – you report on nothing else – I believe that is the reason you are so angry and frustrated so why not take it out on the very place that provides you with purpose. Problem ‘hondo’ is that as the years go by there’s less and less reason for anyone in your profession to take you seriously – you’ll morph into an old man that everyone avoids – they already know what you’re going to say and why you’re going to say it – sad actually but hey we all make our own beds in this world.

    • IF…….as you think…EVERYONE READ SIMERS….. don’t you think he’d still be writing?? don’t you think people would be screaming for his return?
fact is…he was a lousy writer and just like you…nobody found his schtick to be interesting or amusing …. contrary to what you think….he was DISLIKED by most people and and his time had passed. he wore out his welcome soon after arriving from denver and his writing was so bad…the times did the right thing and got rid of the bum (a few years too late) ….the o.c. rgeister was initially impressed with his resume…..but discovered rather quickly……he had outlived his purpose.. NOBODY I KNEW, READ HIS CRAP OVER HIS LAST TEN YEARS while writing in los angeles.
      get a clue BOYO…
      5yight ung!

      • You didn’t enjoy the way he made fun of James (Bum) Garner at Riviera CC? (Bum)Garner sounded like a character in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

    • Now Simers was more entertaining than what we get here. I’m not saying he’s great or anything. He pushed buttons but ultimately got his point across and gave credit where it was due. I’m talking Times Simers. I personally only read Simers when it came to USC and UCLA football when he was at the times. IMO

  7. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

wolfman!!!! oh no you just DIN’T!!!!!

opening the week with a BRUTAL crouch kick to the most BELOVED trOXan of all, the Pious Passer!!!

wolfman, i KNEW you were a ruthless vato, but that’s stone cold even for YOU!!!

and i’m sure Chip Kelly LOVES being told how to run his practices by some candy a$$$ bench warmer who threw ONE PASS last year (incomplete). just cut the bum now, Chip, Tebow’s a winner, has a better arm and is a better Christian than phony Pious!!
