USC Morning Buzz: The Case For Three-Star Recruits

vaughns

When Lane Kiffin was at USC, he told me once he took recruits like defensive end Charles Burks because they would work hard, have a good attitude and if he did not take him, would like face him at another Pac-12 school.

Burks ended up transferring to Azusa Pacific, but I digress. The point is, maybe that helps explain why last weekend the Trojans took a three-star defensive end, another three-star defensive end and an unrated linebacker.

Besides, it’s likely to make little impact on the overall quality of the recruiting class. Everyone tells me (around USC, around Bishop Amat) that wide receiver Tyler Vaughns (pictured above), ranked No. 4 in the nation by Rivals, will commit to USC. And there are the usual Long Beach Poly/Serra recruits who manage to make the agonizing decision to play 20 minutes away from their high schools. So, maybe it’s not a bad idea to get some grinders to go along with the phenoms.

  1. Hallelujah, Scott has finally seen the light!……….Phenoms?…. like Dillon Baxter?… Whitney Lewis?…….if by “grinder”, you mean a player who has a strong work ethic, then yes, it’s not a bad idea….

  2. Scott, do you get a lot of inside information from former coaches at SC that you’re friends with?

    • You’re obviously new here. Either that or your idea of inside info is that McKay’s wearing Nikes in his statue.

Wolfie’s lone coaching friend from USC days past is that abominable failure at Hawaii, Norm Chow,

      • I am new, but it appeared to me that Scott knows a lot of the coaches, both at SC and other universities around the country. He does seem to be a little negative about SC.

        • Unfortunately, any coaches Scott knows are either out of the loop or not speaking to him. Why you think he is so well connected is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read on this blog. Hah, hah, hah. Now I’ve heard everything, from a newbie no less.

          • Now I’m blushing. I hope my boyfriend doesn’t see this! Well, he does seem to have an opinion about a lot of other schools as well as SC. Is he really friends with Coach Carroll?

          • Now you’ve outed yourself as just another time-wasting Troll. Either that or you’re under 10, or just one of those types who doesn’t have a clue.

          • I know quite a bit about SC Football. Not living in LA, I do miss some information. Reading Scott gave me the impression he knew Coach Carroll. Your reference to me as a troll or under 10 years old is insulting.

          • Your insistence that you know a lot about USC football is just another part of your comedy routine. Give it up. Get some new material.

        • Many times how the coaches know SW,is they know to avoid him..he’s known for his negativity and ability to take a positive and spin it TMZ style.

  3. Mr Wolf:
Every successful enterprise needs guys willing to chop the wood. For every Marques Johnson there needs to be a Raymond Townsend. That being said this staff took 2 three star talents at their previous school and turned them into 1st round NFL talent.

Danny Shelton 12th overall pick , 2nd DT picked, a 3-star ranked #32 DT nationally out of high school
Marcus Peters 18th overall pick, 3rd CB picked, a 3-star ranked #69 CB nationally out of high school.

Still though I keep wondering what your boss Mr Moore was doing when he hired you? Nellie, you need me on that wall.

  4. Star ratings mean absolutely nothing until the player proves himself on the college field where more top athletes will play against him.

    • Just thank your lucky stars (and St. Pat) that you have Coach Sark to coach these guys up a couple of notches.

  5. Wolfie continues to amaze me with his bald-faced ignorance. Now he’s introduced the term “grinder” to the recruiting lingo, apparently meaning anyone with less than 10 offers as of June preceding LOI Day.

I have to admit, I get a lot of laughs from this blog nowadays, whether it’s just Wolfie or the Trolls. They’ve become one and the same, disgruntled outsiders who can’t take their eyes off the USC Trojans.

  6. In addition to the pontificating, Scottie, add a little reporting. Give us a list of the 5-star flameouts, and the break-out walk-ons, 2-stars, and 3-star players from the past. Support your notions with some substance.

        • Reggie was a good DB. If Todd Marinovich hadn’t bolted for the NFL early, Reggie wouldn’t have been forced to be our starting QB before Rob Johnson was ready.

          • I did not know that about Reggie Perry. As a youngster I thought Rob Johnson was really good. Now IMO he didn’t have what it takes, couldn’t beat ucla or Washington or Notre Dame. But as a youngster I liked him.

          • On the recruiting end we haven’t skipped a beat. So far Sark and the staff have been killing it on the recruiting side.

          • Besides that year when we loss Jalen Ramsey, Eddie Vanderdose, etc. we’ve done better than the rest of the Pac 12. And even that class only had 12 players in it and every kid in the class was in the army all American or Under Armour game, so it was still considered a great haul even though we stumbled at the end.

          • I’ve liked the last three years when members of The UCLA ‘D’ have been quoted as saying they could tell that SUUCCK basically QUIT in the third quarters. That’s what happens when you “lock the gates on the little boys in short pants”…

          • We gave up against ucla, ucla didn’t even show up against Stanford or Oregon. So ipso facto.

          • Zona’St. GOT YOUR NUMBER
            B.C’S GOT IT TOO
            YOU LOSE TO THE BRUINS
            CAUSE SARK HAS NO CLUE

Lemme know when you finally win something, that matters, against UCLA…
You do know the definition of a ‘buddy’ ….

          • June recruiting title? January and February, that’s when it happens. Even with great recruiting classes, when you’re limited to 15, something has to give. In the next couple of years the depth will be there to make a run. There won’t be a full roster of recruited scholarship players until the ’17 recruiting class.

          • Kiffin did a good job recruiting kids to play for us. That 12 man class was taped together at the end, but was still the best in the Pac 12. Sark has hit on consecutive classes in the top 10. I don’t expect a national title this season. I do expect 10 or 11 wins and to beat ucla. The depth could be an issue on the defensive line, but those are very reasonable expectations for our team. Now…Next year we have absolutely no excuse. Sark will be in his third year and will have three recruiting classes under him with a very experienced team to go along with a very ready Max Browne.
Back to the present…We can have an awesome year this year. It’s a tough schedule so things must go right early. We have to beat Stanford in week 3, I think we beat them. But if we can go down to ASU and win that ball game that would be a big confidence builder and could put us on a track to have a promising year.
You and I both know that USC will get its share of recruits. And you and I both know what a USC recruiting class looks like when we are playing great football. If we win games it all falls into place.
