Alabama Hat Trick

USC.ALABAMA.1977Alabama is going to play Florida State in its 2017 season opener. That means the Crimson Tide will play Wisconsin this year, USC in 2016 and the Seminoles in 2017. Above, USC plays Alabama at the Coliseum in 1977.

  1. Well then again both the USC and WI games are being played in Arlington-TX. Assume the same for Clemson. That’s a lot easier than traveling to Los Angeles or Madison-WI – a lot easier.

  2. That is considerably more challenging than Ark St.!

I used to tell Freddy–“the tougher the competition, the better.”

    Freddy, my cane!

    HEY FREDDY!!!

    • The reason UCLA is signing solid OOC’s is that those programs see playing UCLA a big advantage because:

      1. it’s in the second largest media market
      2. they don’t fear playing UCLA

      3. they do fear playing USC

      • Reminder, it was Texas A&M that cancelled the two game series. USC had to scramble to find an opponent. They found Ark St.

  3. An impressive list of teams, no doubt. …this season’s OOC schedules for both USC and UCLA have been justifiably criticized. …but take a look at the OOC schedule this year for Hawaii…… …Colorado, Ohio State and Wisconsin ….say what you want about Norm Chow, he’s not backing down from playing the tough teams ….

    • HI is playing both OH St. and WI on the road for the big payout just as AR St. and ID are both @ USC for the same this year.

      Chow’s days are sadly numbered.

  4. They have to schedule tough in this era of the playoff because so much of their in-conference schedule is cheesy. They don’t play every other team, and the bottom half of the SEC is a joke. Good for them. Reminds me of when SC consistently played Ohio State, Nebraska, Auburn, etc. during the Carrol era. SC needs to get back to that, scheduling at least one VERY tough opponent to couple with the mid-late season Notre Dame tradition. What’s great about SC, UCLA and Washington (if I remember correctly), is that we only schedule Div 1 opponents. So there are never any TRUE cupcakes, though the Red Wolves and Vandals do come close! I’d prefer more Nevadas, UNLVs, Fresno States, San Diego States in future years.

    • WA is no longer on that list – it’s only USC, UCLA and Notre Dame that have yet to play a Div.IIa school the other 126 have – I agree I’d rather USC play more Mountain West or All American opponents if the B9g 10, Big 12 and SEC decline to.

      • We might as well be playing Appalachian St. or Portland St. I mean Idaho or Arkansas St. should never be on the football schedule of USC.

        • Notre Dame is playing MA this year, Miami-OH in 2017 and Ball St. in 2018 – all MAC opponents just as USC shall play Western MI in 2017.

When better opponents decline to play because of the risk of a loss (TX A&M, OK both refused to play USC) you play the teams that are willing to play.

          • I get that. They backed out of handshake deals. They were never set in stone. At least Mike Garrett and Daryl Gross were hustling in the schedule.

  5. That’s what a schedule should look like.
Attention Pat Haden….Alabama has the right idea!

  6. Since this obviously a shot at SC for playing Idaho & Arky State, shouldn’t Wolfie also mention that over the next 3 years Bama’s also playing Middle Tennessee State, Louisiana Monroe, Charleston Southern, Western Kentucky, Kent State and Colorado State?
