Everyone Is A Trojan

GILLICKIt sometimes seems that way. The Phillies announced today that team president Pat Gillick will retire at the end of the season. Gillick is already in the Baseball Hall of Fame as a general manager, most notably with the Blue Jays from 1978-94 and had three teams win the World Series (Toronto 1992-93, Philadelphia 2008).

But few realize today that he was a pitcher at USC and part of the 1958 College World Series championship team.

  1. Pat was one cool customer – back in 1993 Mike Port (then Angels GM) offered Luis Sojo to the Bluejays for 3rd baseman Kelly Gruber. Gillick snapped a quick ‘yes!’ Port never conducted a pre-physical of Gruber – turns out Gruber had a a spinal bone spur which was evident in his slowly declining mobility that Gillick detected. Gruber played in 18 games on a $4.33 mil. salary.

Great GM not only w. the Blue Jays and the Phillies (both in world series and TOR won back-to-back WC 1992 & 1993) but also the Mariners and Orioles.

      • He played on the WC 1992 team – traded before 1993 began as noted already and BTW he (Gruber) was not happy about it ‘but’ Gillick was.

That lack of ‘due diligence’ by Port became the hammer all subsequent owners/GM’s asked re. delaying signing any trade or FA contracts “…did he get a physical?”

  2. Meanwhile… look for USC to pickup the commitment of 4-star CB Thomas Graham this week.

      • Yeah, calling him a 3-star would fit Scottie’s agenda. Funny how USC is ranked in the top 10 recruiting with all these bad 3-star recruits.

  3. Problematic U. Maybe you can help us with this one, “What were your bruin men’s varsity baseball team doing in the 1950’s in terms of National Championships ?

  4. Just another example of the the top quality players and fine personnel Coach Rod Deadeaux attracted
