Nike Chairman Phil Knight Decides To Step Down

MCKAY.FEETPhil Knight says he will step down but no departure date will be set. Does this mean anything for Oregon? Or does Knight (and Nike) remain its most influential booster? Most fans are unaware of Knight’s close relationship with USC. He named former USC coach John McKay to his original board and donated money to the building of the McKay Center. Those are Nikes that McKay’s statue sports in front of the McKay Center.

  1. Mr. Wolf, are you also friends with Mr. Knight? You know a lot about his donations and support of SC and Oregon. Where did you meet?

  2. Mr Wolf:
I always though Nike made a superior product which probably explains why UCLA wears Adidas.

    • Yeah but not on John McKay’s feet thank you.

Booster are great as long as one can keep them at arm’s length (they can’t) – ten again if Sark wins and wins over the long haul that’s all that matters – won’t need Phil Knight – the world will come to Howard Jones Field just as they did 10 years ago.

    • you should be THANKFUL the wolfman has not forgotten this shameful dishonor to McKay. as i have said before, if the Wooden statue depicted him in Crocs to make a few bucks from the owner of Crocs, the Cadre would tear the statue down and not let it be resurrected until the feet were fixed.

      • What’s next?…. Will Scott also be reminding us of CJ Spiller’s commitment to USC?….. Cody Kessler’s staph infection?……The McKay statue “controversy” will be Scott’s lasting legacy in sports journalism….

  3. Phil Knight is 77 years old and is in no need of money. Possibly health reasons have caused him to change course, but he is the majority stockholder, so he will still be dipping his toes in the Nike lake.

Besides, his son is an influential participant in the thriving company, and it is possible that “Pops” has some say in what the kid does at the old company’s compounds.

I don’t believe Oregon will be on the streets begging for football money.

  4. I worked at a Nike outlet for two years and some of the stuff you heard about Phil Knight was pretty cool. He’s a very charitable man. He is a of course all Oregon, but I don’t remember Oregon ever being ahead of USC, North Carolina, Michigan, or Florida St. They were the top selling Nike schools from 2000-2002. So he wasn’t forcing the ducks down anyone’s throats. Him and Boardman definitely built Nike from the ground up.

  5. Who cares what shoes are on a statue? Enough. Anybody who does care has a screw loose and if there’s politics and money behind a choice – good. That’s how the world goes around, always has and always will.

    • Maybe we can petition to The Gov’t to have NIKE shoes put on The Statue of Liberty? I mean, really….who cares what shoes are on the statue?
      feomnsdgbght ung!

  6. Also my favorite Nike bball show ever…..the first Penny Hardaway’s, awesome shoe.

  7. still can’t believe Paddy O’Hadden or Jk Mckay have STILL not rectified this shockingly offensive historical blunder.
