USC Baseball Suffers Blow As Pitcher Patrick Sandoval Signs

Left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval signed with the Houston Astros and will not enroll at USC. Sandoval was drafted in the 11th round last month and signed for $900,000. Sandoval was the Southern Section Division II player of the year and led Mission Viejo to the Division II title. He was going to play a big role at USC, which lost key pitchers Kyle Twomey and Tyler Gilbert to the draft and still could lose Brent Wheatley, who was drafted by the Oakland A’s.

  1. What else is new with Hubbs recruiting. Hope he has a backup plan for at least one top pitcher from high school or even JC. Look at the team roster which is lacking in under class men who contributed last season except for pitcher Hart, and 1B Martinez. You are right that Wheatley is key for the rotation with Davis and Hart. Any sense on the situation with Marc Huberman if returning to team?

    • SC has always had that problem. The TOP player want to be here and the MLB teams want them too. But you are correct on having a backup plan.

    • What’s Hubbs supposed to do, kidnap the kid and not let him sign ? Trying to get JC kids into USC these days is next to impossible

      • First are you an Alabama fan. My significant lady’s family from Birmingham, and new son-in-law was a mgr. one year and his dad was the LT protecting Joe Namath back in the day. The Trojans brought in two top JC’s last season Gilbert (P) and Oppenheim (OF) who were big contributors. Gillespie lost some real top players, but had a # of players under the radar who developed handsomely during their 3 or 4 years at USC.

  2. Ahh, the unique difficulty in recruiting for college baseball. Kids are18 and could get a million dollars or go write term papers and sit through 8am lectures.
