USC Morning Buzz: All Hail The Original George Tirebiter

GEORGE.1947Here is the original George Tirebiter, in full glory and living color, from the 1947 football season. I’ve never seen him in color before and on Oct. 22, 1947, a 30-car parade was held to crown him USC’s official mascot.

This is not the cute cuddly Tirebiter that followed and became the subject of card stunts in 1952. This is surly George, who bit UCLA’s Joe Bruin on the nose and chased Cal’s mascot, Oski. And of course, bit at the tires of passing cars.

But here, he is also Gorgeous George. The endearing dog who led the band on to the field and watched games from in front of the student section. I know Fox and USC will not name the Coliseum after George. But how about naming the student section, the George Tirebiter Student Section. I bet a couple donors would contribute. And the seats could be two colors to look like Tirebiter in that card stunt.

  1. I’m so glad you cleared this up Wolfie and have acknowledged that Fox and USC will never call it the George Tirebiter Memorial Coliseum. Baby steps.

    • As Frank Buck would say, “I’m Game!”
Pshaw! Screw the added bucks that could be gleaned from sponsors. If the name is to change from LA Memorial Coliseum then what could be better than the George Tirebiter Memorial Coliseum? Locking in USC memorabilia is a bigger deal than for instance, Cal State Irvine voting to call their team the ‘Anteaters’…which I’m sure had their administrators crapping a brick…’Zot Zot!’
Fess up people, which is most important to our university…A canine with tons of tradition…or the shoes worn by a statue of one of our coaches?
How ’bout another poll? Which is most SC?
As there are 7 letters in TROJANS, why not 7 distractors?
Morley Drury?…Marv Goux?…Rod Dadeoux?…The ‘V’ sign which originated in the 50’s when some overweight guy rode around the Grey Lady on the back of poor ‘ol Traveler? …Tusk?…Fight On?…George Tirebiter?
I would opt for ‘Fight On!’ but Jorge would be my close 2nd.

  2. A couple of days ago it rained outside and I liked it. It also helped the firefighters.

    • Sr. Albondigas, what do you opine with regard to Angelina Jolie doing yet another photo shoot with Leibovitz in Panama? Te gusta o te vale pito??

  3. Why don’t we all not respond on these utterly stupid threads, then daily planet will have to make changes.

  4. This stuff is harmless and it shows the younger fans what it was to be a USC fan back in the day. This dog was loved, and the fact that he bit the stupid bRUIN and chased Oski should make his a hero in Trojan land. Why the tradition didn’t continue is beyond me. McKay talked about a dog Pete Adams had, he brought him to practice and he would ride in McKay’s golf cart. Can you imagine the tight azzed coaches today allowing that to happen ?

It’s July, nothing is going on, get over yourselves.

    • Where you a usc fan “back in the day”? I remember you writing posts about you being a fan of another college team, and not usc.

      • Really?? You must have dementia or Alzheimer’s. I started going to USC games in 1967, moron.

  5. George was a cool mascot. And Scott, you can get things started by naming your blog “Inside George Tirebiter.”

  6. I’ve never seen a reporter push agendas like ole Scotty. Just recently we’ve gotten to discuss Nike shoes on McKay, where Sark should live, George Tirebiter and the mysterious case of the Coliseum naming. He tackles these tough issues so other real reporters don’t have to.

    • Unless I missed it, Scott seems to have given up on solving the ongoing “mystery” of the Accounting School building at USC, which shows a bear clutching a football. …..

    • Do you know the difference between a blog and a regular sports writer’s articles that are posted in the sports page?

      • Well, for Scott, aren’t they one and the same? Poor writing, lack of “inside” info, and the inability to get over the past. All while typing up these posts from the comfort of one’s own parents’ basement in his futbol jersey.

          • Blog – a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Inside USC – rehashed news from other sources and terrible opinions on just about everything

          • Your definition of blog fails to mention the expression of opinions of an individual or small group.

  7. So… let me get this straight……Colin Cowherd, whom Scott has recently ridiculed as a USC homer on this blog, had a face-to-face INTERVIEW with Pat Haden yesterday…..Colin discussed his interview on his radio show this morning….Scott will no doubt dissect and ridicule Haden’s comments on a future post……

    • Why would Haden’s granting an interview to a shameless kiss up surprise you?

  8. They’ve put up a statue of the beast on the campus. That’s probably enough for now. It was another era, and it’s fun to see these old images, but times have changed. Public streets no longer run through the campus, college kids no longer sport the Reagan-style haircut shown in that photo, and you probably can’t resurrect a mostly forgotten tradition involving a rascally dog.

However, I do own a terrier, and I would be happy to make him wear a USC jersey and bring him to games, in exchange for reasonable compensation.

    • What would be the cost to encourage him to red rocket, and have him sport a prophylactic at games? Bucket an the Cadre could be big doners for that

      • if we even so much as catch a glimpse of that obscene mutt….i know a vet down in T. J. who will turn that male terrier into a female Chihuahua…

        #CaitlynStyle

        • That would make the vet somewhere around 525…in reverse dog years that is.
I will give you a mulligan on the ‘obscene’ thing however…only because you did not speak with forked tongue and honored the loss of one of your bets by converting ‘siete’ to ‘ocho’. Well done!
As far as the Caitlyn reference to our DD (Decathalon Dude)…Muerde Me!
Glad to see that you are creative as ever, but you should ease up on the caffeine…speaking of caffeine, where is my coke zero? It just points up your evil side as you are probably waiting for it to go flat.

          • Zancudo, as always there is IRON in your words for all Cadre to see. I’ll be in touch to settle up.

like the Lancasters of Casterly Rock, the Cadre always pays their debts!!!

            #TyrionStyle

    • ‘Mostly forgotten tradition?’ You are indeed a “newbie’.
…but then…some say I am older than dirt.

      • I went to college at SC 20 years ago, and I never heard a mention of that dog back then. I didn’t learn about him until I started seeing nostalgia pieces in the alumni magazine. Maybe students today are more likely to know about him, since they installed that statue on campus, but I don’t see a big need to bring back a tradition that seems to have faded away on its own. Maybe it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Sleeping DOGS, get it?! Ha ha!

  9. Mr Wolf:
Lets go back to all men wearing suits and hats to the game and play with leather helmets. Those where the good old days.
