USC Picture Of The Day

DICKERSON.1968USC wide receiver Sam Dickerson, who made the controversial game-winning TD catch against UCLA in 1969, makes a far-less controversial catch against Cal in 1968 at the Coliseum.

  1. I hadn’t heard about this “controversial game-winning TD catch against UCLA in 1969” But I’m sure it was just the Bruins complaining because they lost.

    • Read the comment from ’22,’ which is right on. And you are right on as well because as they say in L.A.:
      Bruins Whine
      Trojans wine

  2. The catch wasn’t controversial. Sam slammed his feet into the ground and left skid marks which were well in bounds. What was controversial to the Bruins fans was a pass interference call against Danny Graham on the prior play, a fourth down pass. Graham was all over the receiver, but the ball was thrown well over the head of the receiver. Bruin fans said it should have been no harm, no foul, because it wasn’t a catchable ball, but that wasn’t the rule then. I always felt sorry from Graham because he took the loss pretty hard, which is understandable. But no one should forget that Graham prevented a Trojan touchdown in the first half with the same aggressive play in the endzone. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

  3. If you look closely, you can see a younger disinterested Wolf on the sideline

  4. I intercepted a pass that day before in our win vs Cal in our Frosh game at the Coliseum. My only claim to fame.

  5. I was there, sitting with two HS friends right in the low corner of the end zone off from where Dickerson came down with his sliding, clutch corner catch. We were close and we went nuts! It was a crappy game actually and little gutty Danny Graham screwed himself by interfering on a throw that was so overthrown it was ridiculous. Great drive home.
