Norm Chow Compares Max Wittek To Carson Palmer

Washington State Cougars vs USC Trojans

Hawaii coach Norm Chow compared his starting QB, Max Wittek, to another former USC QB he coached, Carson Palmer.

“Max has tremendous physical skills, he’s very accurate, has great anticipation. He just needs to continue working on his footwork and staying alive in the pocket . . . But his anticipation with the ball and his understanding of defenses is where it needs to be.”

  1. I don’t know when Wittek suddenly got accurate, but at SC he was highly inaccurate, then he screwed the pooch and couldn’t get in to Texas, which dropped him despite a big need.

More power to Wittek. Hope he gets to start at Hawaii. Shouldn’t be too hard since Hawaii is one of the worst programs in the country and Chow jumped the shark over a decade ago.

  2. Despite Petey hogging all the credit, Chow-Chow WAS the true brains behind any limited success Southern Cal ever had.

Evidence? Not even a PAPER champeenship since he left, DESPITE having the best recruiting in the country!!

    • A little irony 😉 Where’s the powder blue title in the last – what is it – 50 years? But you’re right – USC’s not winning a title in the last 10 years is wholly unacceptable. I appreciate your ascribing to that standard.

      • The little gutties couldn’t even win a toilet paper championship in football. They’re getting ready to crash again this year, just like last year, the year before, the year before that, et al. It’s what they do.

        • Fact: UCLA has a UPI FB NC.

Fact: Klown U hasn’t ever won a men’s Basketball NC.

          • Apples and Oranges, ‘Clowns.’

You just don’t stop, do you

Where I come from we call your type a repetitious bore. Or is it bruin?

          • No Walnut, UCLA has 1/2 a UPI FB NC from 1954 FB season.

            Klown U is 0 forever in men’s basketball and a Pac-12 Tomato Can program – 5 wins in 2 seasons – LOL.

          • How was it you put it? “1/2 library card FB NC’s”. And it was not the AP (Longest and most respected continuously football championship) it was a long forgotten UPI 55 years ago. FAIL

          • Anybody can obtain a Library card. It’s a fact the the two 1/2 FB NC’s are the only FB NC’s not VOTED to Klown U.

Incredibly the 1939 NC that Klown U loudly claim was bestowed on Klown U by Caesar Garrett himself. LOL.

Has Klown U completed the purchase of Notre Dame’s FB heritage?

    • Where was Chow when “Glory Hog” Pete won the Super Bowl a couple of years ago?…..And why couldn’t Chow-Chow achieve ANY success, WHATSOEVER. while at UCLA?….

      • GEEZ LOUISE!! I am just commenting on the subject of wolfman’s post!!! what does it say that EVEYONE immediately starts ranting about UCLA???

        #TotalBruinObsession

        • You were taking a cheap shot at Pete Carroll…..and don’t deny it, BUDDY…….

          • Pete could have used Norm Chow as OC on that call at the end of the Super Bowl last January.

          • You’re probably right…..Too bad that things didn’t work out for him when he was the OC of the Tennessee Titans…….

          • 46-31 Trojans. little gutties losing all-time. That’s all that counts punching bag.

Too bad little gutties can’t win 11 games – ever. Just routine, easy money for USC.

What is it about 2nd-rate you little gutties love to crow about?

        • BTW……don’t get your panies in a bunch…. I wasn’t ranting about UCLA……I was being critical of your lame comment that Chow-Chow was the brains behind Pete

          • that’s queeeer, i TOT i saw the letters UCLA….

as for your Ex, she sounds like a charming, delicate flower who wilted from being exposed to your toxic bitterness over the Sanctions!!!

          • Curious, on another subject, has anyone done a statistical comparison, (say last 3-5 years) of the recruiting services, to see which one is closest with their ratings? Know that a lot of variables are involved in a players college career, yet I’m surprised how big of a gap excists with the services and the ratings.

          • I’m not sure. But 247sports recruiting ranks players by stars like every one else. But they also give the players another ranking combining the players stars on Espn, rivals, scout and 247.
Example-Daelin Hayes is a 4 Star by 247 and is a 4 star in 247 composite ranking which combines 247,espn,rivals,scout.
Btw. Hayes is a 5 star in Rivals, and 4 in espn and scout.

It probably sounds confusing but it gives you a good idea of where a kid is actually ranked.

If you check out FIGHTON247 COM….
You’ll see players have 2 rankings

          • Thanks for the heads up. I wasn’t aware. Combining the star ratings of various services at least restores a modicum of respectability to a star system that is only better than nothing…but not much better. At least it is something to wile away a portion of the off-season.

          • I agree with you. 247 has their star ranking opinion, but also respects the other recruiting sites opinion enough to combine them for a total ranking.

          • My reply to you was deleted..crazy. I mentioned a service and Hayes.. Thanks for the insight.

      • No OL at Westwood High when Chow was OC over there. Surely you noticed that.

        • Not that I disagree with you, but he trolls on this blog would loudly debunk your statement as “EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES!!”, as they do whenever the subject of sanctions is brought up……

  3. Good for Chow in pumping up his QB. I really think confidence is what he lacked at SC. Best of luck to the kid.

    • Silly to use the great Carson Palmer’s name here, one of USC’s best players all-time. Like comparing Allen Bradford to Marcus Allen – not in the same universe. Pumping up is one thing. Being stupid is another.

      • He’s in Hawaii which is a lousy program getting little attention. Strictly marketing, IMO.

  4. Norm has not done much since he left SC, but he can probably still coach the QB position. It will be interesting to see. Most QB’s that transfer to a new school after failing to win the starting job at the old school, don’t fare too well. It’s worth watching.

    • He’s an excellent QB coach…..head coach, or offensive coordinator, not so much……There are a couple of high profile teams (Oregon and Florida State) with new QB’s transferring in, although their circumstances are a bit different….
