USC Morning Buzz: Alternate Uniforms Considered For 2016

A Nike source tells me at least six designs are being considered by USC for an alternate uniform, with the boldest a bronze helmet, bronze uniform that is a type of tribute to Tommy Trojan’s outfit. There is also a white helmet, white jersey and white pants outfit. And a cardinal pants, cardinal jersey, cardinal helmet design.

The source said USC wants an alternate uniform for 2016. The reasons are the same as before: To impress recruits and keep pace with other schools. Call it the Oregon effect.

Remember, Lane Kiffin wanted to wear an alternate uniform back in 2011 but the plan failed when fans and boosters inundated the athletic dept. with negative feedback.

On Dec. 5, 2013, USC coach Steve Sarkisian said, “The uniforms aren’t going to change. The logos aren’t going to change.” Except for one game, apparently, if it goes through for 2016.

  1. This alternate uniform is going to give you material for the blog for the next 5-7 years. Over/under on mentions is 438.

  2. In 1972 at advanced age of 16, I thought Flared plaid pants with a 2 inch cuff and 2 inch platform shoes was a good look. These kids are teenage boys, they don’t know anything let alone how to dress. Uniforms is a small teachable moment about tradition and style. At SC you don’t wear clown outfits (despite what the trolls think of SC) that changes from game to game. SC has a brand that you promote on a consistent basis. This is 2015, the traditional look could be updated with richer colors and material and still be functional, durable and comfortable. The shiny helmets aren’t bad but they don’t go with the dull fabric on the jerseys.

    • The shiny helmets would be totally fine if they just used a red that matched the red in the uniform, like they regular helmets do. The solution to this is as simple as moving over about two spots on the paint swatch card. I’ve always found it odd that with the number of people that had to approve all of this, someone didn’t look and say “dude, those colors don’t match” and they send them back to the paint shop.

The super shiny gold helmets look pretty sweet with the dark blue ND uniforms since, shockingly, they stuck with the same color they have used for years.

  3. I don’t know why USC can’t wear the old school Gold helmets with the numbers on the side. That way, they can still unveil “alternate” uniforms and impress the kiddies, but still stay true to tradition.

  4. Since the guy sat the Nike Store told you that the guys at corporate are pushing for SC to wear some awful alternate jerseys next year, is it safe to assume that this will be all consuming and we should expect zero coverage of fall camp?

          • I found it. Sorry, I was looking for scoutCOM (dyslexic). I seen that Moody left because Kiffin left. I didn’t know that. When Moody left I was so mad that I didn’t care for him anymore, but a couple of years ago I heard he said he made a mistake leaving USC. As hated as Kiffin is or was he sure can recruit and kids are still attracted to him.

          • Even that little crumb of credit escapes Scott and his hatred of Kiffin..

          • Yes it does. IMO KIFFIN had a tough uphill battle at USC. Not saying he had no faults. But we had enough to win. I think MONTY KIFFINS defense was a huge part of Lanes downfall. And naturally the son will stay loyal to his father. If Pendergrass or another DCoordinator had our defense playing above average at least then Lane Kiffin probably would have lasted longer because his team’s put up points. Monty’s Defense gave up 35 a game.

          • MASON (USC) & IRELAND (UCLA) are on ESPNU now in place of Colin Cowherd. They had Sark on today. Sark is on College Football Live today also.

          • He’s radioactive after his Latin American baseball comments. Now is the time for Pat Haden to show his gratitude for all the positive PR he has given USC over the years.

          • Would you team him up with Pete Arbogast and John Jackson? Or perhaps a special pregame host this year?

      • Do you think Wolf would have a higher placed “source” at Nike, given his #outfitoftheday-like obsession with any team changing their uniforms?

        • Wolf BETTER be correct on his Alternate Uniform story because other websites are going with his story and saying “according to Scott Wolf”.

          • Scott has zero accountability to anyone….. it’s like the Wild, Wild West with his shoot from the hip style….. anything goes on this blog…….

  5. One jazzy, outside the box, alternate uniform for one game would be great. I’d look forward to it and the players and recruits LOVE this stuff and it wouldn’t change the iconic USC logo and tradition one bit. You can have your cake and eat it too here. It’s 2015 and like it or not, it’s in-style, progressive, entertaining and fun too.

We’ve got bigger fish to fry at USC and the least of my worries is if USC wears a tribute or throw-back or futuristic uniform to get some splash for a game. Basic PR and yes, Oregon has changed the presentation culture of college football, like it or not. That’s reality. Best not ignore it.

  6. I wish we could see them. SC commit Michael Pittman said Sark showed him the alternate uniforms the week he committed.

  7. Stupidest idea by USC – EVER.

Uniforms don’t attract recruits. The opportunity to be part of a tradition of winning and the championship tradition is the attraction.

Anyone who picks a school to play football based on what they are going to wear on Saturdays probably never put on a jock strap in real life.

    • It’s always best to never imitate f ucla in anything they do including alternative uniforms.

  8. ” To impress recruits and keep pace with other schools” ? Huh ? I think other schools need to impress recruits, and keep up with USC.
