USC/UCLA Picture Of The Day

KILMER.2This is a 1960 copy of the Daily Bruin the day before the USC/UCLA game, asking USC to take it easy on Bruin great Billy Kilmer the next day. Kilmer ended up completing 4 of 18 passes.

  1. Well, come on, Wolf, those were different times in the football world. Coaches did not realize how they could control the game, and even win as an overwhelming underdog with the forward pass, instead relying on the nearly century old idea of running the ball down the throat of the opposition

  2. By the way, in the previous 10-years thru the ’50s SC had only won 2 times against the SUCLAs

McKay had a lot of prove, and that 1960 victory over the SUCLAs cemented his position as the possible next great SC coach. He then parlayed that success into a National Championship in 1962. And then another in 1967. And then another in 1972 and a final one in 1974.

    • Except SC lost to f ucla the next seaon 10-7. The 1962 dream season and national title cemented McKay’s position as the next great USc coach.
