USC Quote Of The Day

Steve Sarkisian was asked if he needs to defend USC’s schedule because the Trojans open the season against Arkansas State and Idaho.
“Sometimes,” he said. “At the end of the day, they’re on our schedule. We don’t practice harder Tuesday based on who we play Saturday.”

  1. Let’s face it. Sark’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. If he’s not going to answer the question, he should at least have a better sidestep. He’s got 18 hours a day to think about it.

    • Fair enough, but who was the tool that asked Sark this question? ….I don’t think that Sark made the schedule, did he? ….thus, isn’t this question misdirected?

      • The buck stops with the polarizing guy making over 4 mil a year, ya think? All he had to do was quote how difficult USC’s schedule is rated by some respected news sources. Question instantly defeated. Wolfie drowns. Instead, Sark blabbers on about Carroll’s approach to game prep. Problem is Sark can’t hold Carroll’s jock and can’t even handle a stupid Wolfie attack. There’s a reason Sark’s not that popular, nor respected, among USC fans (see LA Times) and this is one of them. Just dumb.

        • Winning cures all. ….he will have to earn the respect of USC fans, and will require winning 10 games or more, including UCLA and Notre Dame….frankly, had Sark mentioned the difficulty of this seasons schedule, Scott would have scoffed at the notion. …don’t kid yourself. …and only a handful of coaches could hold Carroll’s jock….

          • Defending Sark is your privilege. But the reason why Wolfie made Sark’s quote a complete headline is because Sark sounded stupid, so Wolfie didn’t need to scoff. Sark plainly bombed. If winning cures all, hopefully Sark will learn to answer lame questions better. For now, he’s still a mediocre coach that Oregon and ucla literally make fun of and who who still can’t handle Wolfie. Everybody knows USC has the talent to win the Pac-12 (now), the main weakness being the HC who threw away a few games last year and earned the moniker Seven Win Sark at UW.

          • I’m certainly not defending Sark. ..sorry that you read it that way. …it is up to Sark to prove himself. …he doesn’t need me or anyone else to defend him. …granted Sark may not be as articulate as Carroll, but not every great coach gives good quotes. ..Bill Bellicek for one …. and you certainly can’t criticize his recruiting skills. …time will tell….if he stinks this year, I will be the first to admit that he should leave, but if he is successful, I would expect you to admit that you were wrong.

          • You missed my point actually. I said Sark gave a stupid answer and as the spokesman and face of the USC program, should respond to lame questions much more intelligently. Then you suggested he shouldn’t have even have needed to answer the question because he didn’t make the schedule. Wrong. Questions such as these are routine for HCs. They’re the mouthpieces, which was one of the reasons Kiffin got fired. He couldn’t do it well. Obviously, Wolfie enjoys baiting Sark as well. Gee, wonder why?

And I never said he stunk, I never said he should leave and I never said he couldn’t be successful. I said he should get much smarter with handling Wolfie. My start to this thread was very narrow. And as far as his record goes, I said he’s mediocre and he is. That’s also the opinion of the coaching community, the media and the majority of USC fans. He’s not a bad coach. Just in the middle somewhere, sitting on top of a talent group only a few can ever dream of – which is the only reason why he is supposed to win the Pac-12.

So if he wins, he should win because all the pieces are in place. And if he loses the Pac-12, he’s just like Mora, except Mora beat his team into total submission last year.

I’m rooting for Sark because I’m a USC fan. I just hate to see Wolfie gloating that he made a fool of the USC HC. It just doesn’t sit well with me.

          • I appreciate your passionate and thorough response, Jack. I don’t think it was, as you put it, a stupid answer. It was a vanilla answer, to be sure, but what did you expect? And you’re giving Scott way too much power. Yes, he loves to bait people with leading questions, but we know that’s his schtick and the reason why many of us come to this blow to take pot shots at his lame comments and lack of football knowledge. He is very skilled at his National Enquirer reporting style and he apparently endears himself to those looking a “devils advocate” point of view…..handling Wolf is such a miniscule part of Sarks real job, in my opinion, which is to recruit and develop players and to win big games….Glad to hear that you’re rooting for Sark and supporting the team, as I am…..after all, what’s the alternative?…..Sark is a 41 year old coach who is still learning his way….Carroll wasn’t exactly a rock star in the NFL with New England or the NY Jets…Fight on!

        • All good points Jack. But I can’t tell you how many times when we played UW people would say Sark should be our coach. Not me, I don’t remember who I wanted.

          • Who were those people? I heard the opposite, that he couldn’t get UW to be competitive in the Pac 12 North.

  2. What would have been a better answer?

“Darn right it is humiliating to play these two marshmellows. But it places a lot of pressure on SC to beat them.

  3. Is he supposed to pull a Bob Stoops and say “Arkansas St is a team to watch out for and we’ll have our work cut out”

    NO!

    • Hey buddy, Seeing where its looking like Martel is going elsewhere. Tua stronger than ever. Interesting article yesterday at Ri…L’s about 2017 offers and such..

      • I heard that. Blair Angulo and the staff say no on Martell. And Yes in Tua. It doesn’t bother me as long as Martell stays out of the Pac 12. I listened to the first 15 minutes of their podcast at work. Just the prediction part. Seems like Angulo doesn’t want to show as much love to SC when it comes to Betiku. Other sites are.

        • Tate has excellent talent. He’s 2017 about to be a junior. He is as much about the hype as he is game…I’m part old school, team first , built on leadership. I just have not been sold on him..and I think he will light it up in college. That being said, Tua has impressed me .Again these are kids still.2018-2019 players.
I like Tua at this stage.Come 2018 class there will be some kid this year as a sophomore who will put up crazy HS numbers, have grown 6″ and become the darling for his class
USC, must build and maintain character in its players, recruiting ones with that maturity is so vital.

          • Yeah. I’m sure there will be a few QBs who emerge as Juniors and Seniors. It’s still early. You never know, SC could switch gears and go after two others in a two year time table.

  4. It’s one of the toughest schedules in the nation. Oregon, Notre Dame, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Stanford. Put those against any other team’s schedule – not many will have a tougher 7 games. So you have a couple of very low division 1 teams – big whoop!

  5. it looks like the players are not the only ones who are sensing this season is sailing straight into a rocky shore!!!

now the fans are tearing Ocho apart before the first game!!

it’s really gonna be a fireworks show when the trOXans hit 4 losses in October….just rest assured the CADRE will be there to SCATTER the pieces!!

    #ItsGonnaBeSweeeeet

  6. Reminder, Texas AM was supposed to play USC on September 5, 2015. However, once they decided to join the chickens of the sEc, they were told (supposedly from the sEc) to drop USC because they did not want the usual beating that USC would have dropped on aTm and the reputation of the sEchickens. So USC had to find a competitor unlike aTm and play at the Colisuem. Arkansas St. answered the bell. That is why the schedule looks like the way it is.

    • We open against Alabama next year, at a neutral site, so that should muffle some of the critics…..unless the teams decides to break their alternative uniforms….

  7. All major college football teams play cupcakes , so Steve Sarkisian doesn’t need to defend anything .

    • The ACC should play tougher non conference games. They’re conference is very light. Although we lost to BC.

  8. In lieu of Texas A&M’s cancelation of USC’s 2015 scheduled game, what are the Trojans chances of ever scheduling another SEC home and away series considering USC’s relatively recent devastation of Auburn, Arkansas, and Tennessee ? Thanks be to Nick Saban for putting Alabama’s 2016 season on the line. Should be a great game, similar to the unbelievable USC-LSU game in Baton Rouge in1978, won by the Paul McDonald/Charles White led Trojans, on our way to another well earned National Championship !!! FIGHT ON !!!
