Jalen Greene At Two Positions

Steve Sarkisian said that Jalen Greene will play quarterback and wide receiver in training camp. Why? Sarkisian said he is too athletic to keep off the field, and Greene is currently the No. 3 QB.

“The guy I keep hearing about is (TCU quarterback) Trevone Boykin,” Sarkisian said.

Boykin played quarterback and some wide receiver for the Horned Frogs. With USC not exactly shorthanded at receiver it will be interesting to see Greene’s chances of actually getting on the field.

  1. Green is in a tough spot. He’s clearly talented and occasionally spectacular, but he’s also clearly behind Max Browne. Making things worse, he’s got two talented guys coming up behind him. If either Town or Darnold can come into fall camp and show the potential to be the emergency QB this season and the next guy in line for the 2016 season, Greene will make the full time move to WR. He’s too talented to be the scout QB and FG/PAT holder and WR seems to be the quickest path to get some production out of him.

  2. He can be a good practice QB. Helps us with teams like Arizona and Oregon with his athleticism. But he should stick with quarterback at the moment. Learn the offense. You never know when you might be thrown into action.

  3. Probably never see the field as qb unless it is a slaughter or one of the qb’s ahead are out. With the injuries we seem to have with receivers, he could have a shot at some PT at receiver. Hope he gets to play, great athlete.

  4. Hes the 3rd QB currently behind Kessler and Browne. If he stays at QB I believe he has a shot to compete for the starting job in 2016. Or at least be the 1st QB off the bench. If I were Jalen I would keep my oars in the QB waters.

  5. Greene is a classic position ‘tweener. Haven’t we always known this? Hasn’t Greene always known this? He’ll never be first string at any position at USC unless he decides to become a special teams terror. There’s better talent both in front and behind him at both positions. A man’s got to know his limitations. Buy into it or die into it.

  6. A minority view…

I hearken back to the inner squad game at the Gray Lady in 2014. We saw very limited action from Jalen, but the little we observed, to me anyway, was better than the performance of both Kess and Browne. His instincts reminded me of Steve Sogge but with the all around physicality/psyche of a QB with multiple skills who can thrive…even with somewhat limited protection afforded by an OL. Problem is, that the head shed does not share this particular perception…hence, he has only received limited reps. If he is allowed to mature as a QB, it actually would not surprise me at all if he legitimately was allowed to beat out Browne year after next.

Given my limited exposure to the skills of both Town or Darnold, I don’t see them as ever making an impact that Greene could. Jalen has moves and reactions quicker than our two current top QBs…and IMHO would thrive if given the opportunity. But I doubt it will ever come to fruition with him being allowed to reach his full potential… like it didn’t with Woods, Telfer, or Farmer. But then, we have an AA LT playing center, so what is new?

Give me a Pete, JR1, Marv G, J. McKay, or Ed O and miss- positioning would not enter into the picture.

Don’t bother tearing me a new one, I just needed to vent on what I observe is currently going on with Mr. Greene.

    • Woods, Telfer and Farmer had injury riddled careers and left school early, except for Telfer.

  7. Jalen Greene better get out and transfer as fast as he can, because Steve Sarkisian is blowing smoke up his A** . He will never get significant playing time as a quarterback, and will barley see the light of day as a receiver, because USC is constantly signing 4 & 5 star players at both positions.

    • Agree with you and Larry “el Zancudo” Harris.

When Ocho says quite honestly he’s too athletic to keep off the field” that’s code for “well he sure ain’t playing QB…”

Maxie Browne probably won’t get three snaps all year, you think Greene will play? If he gets in at all I’ll be surprised.

      • Unfortunately, I’m afraid you are correct.
I rescind my “Muerde Me’ comment, thrown at you in a moment of pique a fortnight ago.

    • “… because Steve Sarkisian is blowing smoke up his A** .
You do have a way with words.
