USC Morning Buzz: Steve Sarkisian Wants Things Earned

USC coach Steve Sarkisian spoke earlier this summer about coddling athletes so I asked him to expand on what it means for the football team this season.

“I think we need to talk a little differently to them,” Sarkisian said. “I don’t want them to feel like they get it. I want them to earn it. It’s no different than parenting. It’s not just, `I’m getting pampered or entitled.’ ”

It sounds like USC might be meant to feel a little hungrier mentally, which might prevent lapses.

“We’ve made so many mistakes looking past teams and letting teams back in games,” linebacker Su’a Cravens.

In the picture above is the new recruits’ lounge at the Coliseum, which is located near the stadium’s clock.

  1. So I guess Sark will make them take the stairs instead of the escalator up to the new player’s lounge.
By the way, is that a bar?

  2. These lavish facilities are a big mistake. The message to recruits is that facilities are a key decision point in where they attend school, when in fact they have nothing to do with the level of success they will ultimately achieve. Nice facilities are just a distraction from what really matters. It’s no coincidence we fielded some of the best teams in college football history at the same time we had some of the worst facilities in the country.

    • Yeah, you wouldn’t see anything like that at Alabama, Florida St, Ohio St. or Oregon.

        • USC Factoid: In the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, USC athletes won 25 medals, more than any other American University…….

          • Awesome fact to tell my niece. She runs cross country and is really good. Has an offer to play soccer at UCSB going into her junior year at Beaumont High School. And our family is all USC, but she want to go to Ucla. She’s stubborn.

          • A free education for playing sports is a great opportunity, no matter where she goes……Take her to a few USC football games and she’ll flip! LOL.

          • She went to the USC – Ucla soccer game at the coliseum and got to talk to the SC players. I think it made an impression. We’ll see.

          • Unless you take her to the UCLA-USC football game. Nobody wants to be second.

          • Must be smart and athletic. She obviously wants to be part of the University with the most National Championships in history and the best academics this side of Stanford.

    • Times change… don’t get caught up in a time warp like Scott……improved facilities are fairly important, but certainly not the only factor to the teams success (i.e. Galen Center)

      • It’s a cool just for show type of feature. I’m sure Oregon and Washington have something similar.

No rush. But how about a Trojan Trivia?

        • Who was the USC women’s swimmer that set four world and 16 American records, and was known as “Sippy”?

          • Cynthia Woodhead…..she was born in Riverside, CA in 1964…..she won 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals in the 1978 World Championships held in Berlin, when she was only 14 years old… she qualified for 6 events in the 1980 Summer Olympics, which were held in Moscow, but she was denied the opportunity because of the US boycotting it… she did win a silver medal in 1984, when the Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles

    • Just look up the article in Sports Illustrated a year or two ago on the Oregon facilities. Unfortunately that’s what they have to compete against. You are correct in that facilities and uniforms are secondary to winning and becoming a better football player. It is up to the coaches to show success and sell their skills as coaches that ultimately will get recruits.

      • I saw the article. The facilities are impressive, but there weren’t any pictures of the room where they keep their national championship trophies.

  3. That’s pretty cool. Get the kids liquored up and they commit. I,I,I,I,I…….Want to be a Trojannn. Ffffight ONNNN!

  4. So Daily news tell us what we are looking at.Obviously anyone under 21 will not be served alcohol.. So is this a bar height counter where student athletes can sit and have a beverage. I’ve seen juice bars like this..For sure after sactions , compliance is all over everything.. Facilities like this are in or coming to every major program that can raise the funds..(see Oregon).. But again show us a picture with caption explaining what we actually see….As far as Sark goes SW you have posted all summer long about Andore and his Olympic quest. In an article Friday in another major local paper Sark said he supports that dream and will address it after season.Along with MUCH more detail… Wonder why you haven’t brought that up????
