USC Picture Of The Day

USC.ALABAMA.1978

Yesterday I ran a picture of the 1977 USC-Alabama game at the Coliseum. Here’s the rematch in 1978, which USC won, 24-14, en route to a share of the college football national title. Alabama was ranked No. 1 at the time of the game.

  1. Mr Wolf:
Outstanding picture.I had a great advantage at UCLA coaching basketball because our football team never did much to steal the headlines.
    JW

    • You will steal the headlines if you win the big contest this weekend and end your 0-233 streak.

  2. Was that the Sam “Bam” Cunnningham game? Where Bear Bryant brought him into the Alabama locker room and told his players “this is what a football looks like”.

Btw. My uncle calls me Sam “Bam”.

    • This game brought about great change at Alabama, which also brought about change in
programs in the south in general. Sam “Bam” Santa Barbara High.. Sam looked at Faces that were beaten and All White. Sam one of my favorite Trojans.. Excellent track star too. Hence he would leep over goal line… Believe it or not I actually watched tape of that game in private office of my Dallas Dentist Friend, ex Oklahoma player, along with Barry Switzer… (He was waiting on crown) 1993.

      • Alabama appears to be a fully integrated team by this game judging by the picture.

        • You are correct… it would be the 1970 game that Sam Cunningham changed the complexion of Alabama football. USC pummelled Alabama 42-21 that game, in Birmingham, Alabama…

          • Jimmy Jones , to Bobby Chandler..Clarence Davis was the running back, Sam Fullback.. Think Charles Young was on that team also..first TE I ever saw that was a receiving star.Know there were others before Charles but his play opened the position up at USC. Such great tradition USC has !!!

          • Charle Young was a great TE with the Philadelphia Eagles (#6 pick in the 1973 NFL Draft)….he also played with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers (where he won a Super Bowl ring in that memorable game against the Cincinnati Bengals), before ending his career with the Seattle Seahawks (1983-1985)…

        • SAS mentioned Sam Bam, his game was 1970 along with jimmy Jones , Young great team. Later that year .USC was first integrated team to play there.

        • The whole South was affected by the game.Wonder if ESPN has done documentary on the game and the importance?

        • My dentist friend, George Jarman,12 yrs older than I, played for Sooners .1963 in OK’s first trip to LA, kicked the FG that beat US. He was on cover of TV guide!! Which then was huge. 43 yrds. Longest at that time OK.Met Jarman 1982, to this day we have a bet each year for dinner on whose team has best record..
Have some cool Switzer stories, involving Cowboy’s job.

          • Truthfully, like a Gentleman. I will say the next time I was in Dallas at his home, He fixed me one of his incredible Margaritas, but instead of his private tequila, he put cheep stuff…. ha… I caught immediately… He’s a good man, but a Sooner.

          • Joking, I root for them, watch their games at times, And Whip them When we play em.

  3. Wolfy is so worried that the 2016 Trojans will take the field in day-glo neon green jerseys for that match up

  4. We actually shared the Championship with Alabama that year even though we beat them by 10 [which was a large margin back then] in their own place. AP voted Alabama their champ. Lame!

    • Had a young freshman on that team named Marcus….Allen.maybe the Best USC team of all.Charles White, Lynn Cain.. John Robinson coach I think.

  5. USC probably had to play Alabama on road because they were afraid to lose to them at home!

    • Oh, Ted, as in Teddy Bear, or Little Bruin, you are so invisible, as in we all can see what you are made of, which is SC-envy through and through

      It is so cool, Teddy.

  6. I was at the game. We killed ’em. It was a complete blowdown. They are still trying to tackle Charles White.

    • Everybody tried to tackle White that year.Amazing year for him Heisman , didn’t he run over Irish for huge numbers?
