First USC Practice In The Books

USC completed its first practice of training camp with a full array of players, except tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, who is taking summer classes until Tuesday and will not participate before then. It is not known yet if he is academically eligible.

Steve Sarkisian said Saturday night’s practice felt different because of the depth, not the fact there are 105 players practicing but the quality of those players vs. a year ago. Sarkisian mentioned tight end Tyler Petite and defensive lineman Jacob Daniel as two freshmen who stood out early.

Near the end of the practice, wide receiver JuJu Smith drew a lot of compliments from the crowd for a deep pass he caught on cornerback Kevon Seymour.

  1. Quarterbacks

Max Browne is on Cody Kesslers heels. Max looked great
tonight. He moves well in the pocket. He looks confident. As Sark said during Spring practice that he would have no qualms of calling on Max to take over the reigns if Cody were to go down in a game.

I was surprise to not see Jalen Greene take any snaps at QB.
He wasn’t in a QBs yellow jersey. I will say he may have a future at WR. He is very athletic and had some nice catches and runs after catching the ball tonight.

Ricky Towns appears to be the 3rd QB now. Him participating in Spring ball appears to have given him the edge
    over Darnold.

I did like the way Kessler seems to step up in the pocket
much better. He shuffled his feet much better than I’ve seen him in the past.He reminded me of Barkley’s pocket movement his Junior year at QB.

    Wide Receivers

JuJu looks like he’s ready to be the man. He appears to be
more of a possession WR however. Hence I would like to see Adoree get more touches on offense to stretch the field.

Darreus Rogers appears a bit more sleek this season. He had a nice run after catch for a TD. Steven Mitchell looks steady
and ready to do work as our slot WR

We seemed to have a platoon of Tight Ends out there. I
believe we will be ok there without Dixon.

    Running Backs

Ronald Jones had a beautiful run that really impressed the
good size crowd of fans that attended tonights practice. He weaved in and out of defenders down the field.

Dominic Davis was very active as well. He looked like a vet
out there in his 1st practice. Sharp and very confident.

    Defense

The Defense was very spirited and really bouncing around tonight. A number of the new guys jumped right in there.

Cameron Smith really benefited from coming in early this Spring as a freshman. He will see as much action as any Freshman I’m of the opinion. The linebacker crew looks much more improved
    and with greater depth.

Biggie Marshall appears to be feeling his way around out
there. I believe he will come off the bench at corner to start the season. Adoree Jackson and Kevon Seymour have really stepped there games up at the corners.

Adoree played solely on Defense tonight. He is a stud however and a game changer. As many touches as we can get him on offense will be an asset.

Overall the defensive appears much more comfortable this
season. They were flying around out there and looking to strip the ball at every turn.

      • Porter wearing #45 worked with the 2nd unit. He appeared to be feeling his way around a bit on D on this 1st practice as Biggie was.

I was there for the initial 1 1/2 Hr. He must have gotten his interception after I left.

      • Fullbacks have quite a few more plays. Vertical routes, some nice plays.Greene had multiple catches…couple reports mention good plays by both new freshman DT’s.
Sounded like a good practice, with multiple new and returning players singled out…. This team to me has a new and good energy (balance) to it..
Watched the Dan P./ Sark interview yesterday.. Thanks.. Enjoyed it.

        • Definitely feels like good new energy. This freshman class is too good and will only get better by learning and competing. And the upperclassmen will only get better by having them on their heels.

          • Seeing FB involved in offense from day one
with new plays, the number of play makers we have at all eligible positions..the ball is going to spread out, get in a lot of hands
