USC Sunday Buzz: Sam Darnold Makes Quick Impression

First practices often reveal very little but one thing caught my eye last night. When freshman quarterback Sam Darnold finally came in for some reps, he fired the ball fearlessly, often into a traffic. One pass was intercepted but there were also some tight completions and some tough throws made.

His confidence was notable because it was his first practice and it will be interesting to watch him in training camp.

        • at the army all American practices Gustin was in the gym lifting weights 2 in the morning. Yes, I said 2 in the morning. Besides being a highly recruited LB/DE he’s been labeled as the hardest working and mature for his age. He will be an impact this season.

          • Go Tama, I strongly believe you will have a totally different opinion on Porter Gustin after a few games. He also had a monster game in the Army AA Bowl with a interception returned for a touchdown, bunch of tackles and was the MVP. Against the best offensive players in the country.

          • Don’t let the facts get in the way of somebody calling out a kid before he has even played a snap.

          • That means he is going to be a !st round pick as a junior. You have never picked anything right in your life, especially about USC.

          • He looks like an NFL body already. Similar to Leonard Williams coming in as freshman. And actually the story is it was Porter Gustin and Osa Masina were lifting weights at 2AM while all the other players were in the game rooms hanging out.

  1. I’ve seen Darnold play and he’s impressive, no doubt about it. However he does like to make physical contact with the opposing defense. This behavior was ok in HS but won’t work in the Pac-12.
