Subdued Steve Sarkisian Blames `Meds And Alcohol’ For Behavior

Embedded image permalinkSteve Sarkisian held his press conference and for the first time claimed he mixed medication with alcohol Saturday. He said he does not have a drinking problem and would not reveal the medication. Sarkisian also said he would seek treatment but stopped short of saying he would go to rehabilitation. An odd event before practice with players warming up in front of Sarkisian.

If you watched were you convinced by what Sarkisian said?

  1. He did not say that he DIDN’T have a problem, he said he didn’t know and was getting help so see what he needs to do.

  2. This is not good as most know you don’t mix drugs and alcohol. Now, I’m not sure if I support him because decision making in critical situations are the key for having an excellent season. God help him.

    • Last year disorganization cost us the games against Utah and ASU. We were totally unprepared for Boston College and UCLA kicked our a-ses. We could have easily won 3 more games. How would our bowl have looked? How would have recruiting looked? You are on point here.

          • You’re a common Detroit Troll and we all know it. The fact you would pretend you are an SC fan just shows you are sicker than most. Get some help poor little gutty.

          • Im a Trojan and don’t tolerate mediocrity. I will not accept less than the best effort from the coaching staff. This can’t happen when alcohol has been proven to impair their judgment and ability like it just has. See my post above about close games and unpreparedness last year. A clean and sober coach wouldn’t suffer through problems like that. In this instance, perceptions matter. A firm response to this situation by the coach, AD and President would firm up those perceptions and remove doubt.

          • If you don’t tolerate mediocrity, why are you so mediocre, Troll Boy?

It’s none of your business what Haden, Nikias or Sark think about the situation. The more doubts a feeble ucla Troll such as yourself has, the better.

          • Feeble UCLA 38 – Mighty SUCC 20. Flex for us Jacky.

Any news from Klown U men’s Basketball “Spaghetti Tour”?

No doubt the “under 5′ 3″ Italian Loafer League” is pretty tough, so attacking the hoop is out of the question for Andyain’twinning’s fab crew.

      • An injury riddled, short staffed sanctioned team is what cost SC those three games. Two of the three were on the road where the roster size is even smaller. You watch the games or just follow Scott’s biased twitter rants on game days? Assuming the latter of the two.

        • “We’re Trojans. We play to win” – Coach O
You sound like LK making excuses. You also sound like 7ark making excuses.

          • Not sure what 19 season ending injuries before the season starts coupled with an already shortened roster has to do with Trojans playing to win. They played to win and lost. Deserved to lose all three of those games. You obviously do not follow the team enough to even intelligently respond. Keep trolling. You do realize they had top 3 recruiting nationally by Rivals, Scout, ESPN, ect? Did you know that travel rosters are smaller than home rosters? You cannot even string a sentence correctly without misspelling you troll. Pray you didn’t waste money on going to USC.

        • Actually, coaching lost you all three: Utah, BC and ASU, not a short roster. ASU scored three TDs in the final 4 minutes of the game, with a breathtaking display of poor decision making and clock management by Sarkisian and staff. Mental breakdowns vs Utah were o the coaches as well, allowing the Utes to win it in the final 8 seconds. AT BC, the Trojans came in flat and overconfident. Again, bad coaching. The only game you actually lost flat out was against UCLA– you can blame that one, in part, on short roster. Look, not a hater, but on top of Sark’s off-field issues, he’s just not a very good game coach. Great recruiter, popular with the players, but not a great game-day guy. Never has been.

          • Wrong. ASU was not a coaching error, but a lucky 1 in 100 hail mary pass

Utah was the fault of Ogholar, who unbelievably stepped out of bounds, when he did not have to, short of winning the game

            BC was in the rain.

SUCLA and what’s his name had SC’s number

          • But how do you explain three touchdowns in four minutes vs ASU? Total defensive breakdown–that’s on the coaches. The Hail Mary was just icing. Preparing players to play in the rain? Coach’s job–you can’t blame that on sanctions. Don’t forget that Sark’s 5-year Pac-12 win percentage is an underwhelming .548, with zero 10-win seasons. Verdict is still out as to whether or not he can handle the keys to the Ferrari that is the SC football program. I wish the man the best with his personal issues–he needs some true friends around him right now.

  3. Memo to Sark, Haden, and Nikeas. The cover up is worse than the crime. I haven’t heard an excuse worse than this than from my seven year old nephew. How do you seek treatment without entering a rehab facility? If it is AA, then you admit you have a drinking problem, which he says he doesn’t. If anyone can decipher this let me know.

    • You would have been negative no matter what he said. If Sark said he didn’t have a problem, you and the trolls would call him a liar. If he said he did have a problem, you and the trolls would rally to try and have him fired. For people like you, it’s always half empty.

      • If he said he had a problem, which Im now convinced that he does by his own admission of drinking on medication, I’d be more than happy for him to take a LOA and return to the team when he has established a foundation to live free from his problem. An alcohol and/or drug problem doesn’t get better other than through complete abstinence.

        • Read above post, if you can. I heard the whole conference. So you’ve never had a drink when your were taking medication? Please. The meds could be for anything. Could be at the end. Who knows? I’ve had a drink at the end of taking meds for a virus. I’m sure many have. Doesn’t mean you have a drinking problem. Shows you should pay attention to the Dr and the med’s warnings.

    • Non-problem drinkers don’t mix medications and alcohol PERIOD. If there is no problem with him drinking, what does he need treatment for? This is a total ruse. Im certain the most likely cover up here is from others in the Athletic Dept and Office of the President who are likely more than glad to promote a drinking culture in exchange for donations. The non-response is WAY worse that a one-time slip up that could be dealt with professionally.

  4. The real question is how can Scott Wolf be comfortable reporting yesterday that alcohol was banned in the locker room when not fact checking to find out it was never allowed in the locker room? There is a big difference between the coach and player’s lockerroom. Anything for twitter followers right Scott? Pathetic

    • wolfman NEVER suggested or implied there was booze in the PLAYERS area. He probably assumed football fans know the coaches offices are always adjacent to the players area, COLLECTIVELY, they are referred to as the locker room. Nobody, except the truly ignorant thought he meant booze was provided to players.. Cat the same time, if borrOcho and his crew are boozing, it’s in full view of the players. BorrOcho CONFIRMED this was the case.

don’t you ever, EVER question the wolfman’s reportage again.

      #YourBeingWatched

      • Yes Chuckie, he did imply there was alcohol in the players locker room and that USC has a drinking problem. We call that “irresponsible journalism” in business.

        • Wrong. wolfman also corroborated that this happened at U Dub “always beer ( and booze) around”… Kiff did the same thing….DEAL WITH IT!!!

          #ItsSoLikeThat

          • Does “corroboration” mean “from an unnamed source” or can Scottie prove this?

I thought Scottie milked the story of Kiffin getting into a fight with an assistant coach as the reason for scratches on Kiffins face – now it was because Kiffin was drunk and fell down? Really?

      • It’s “You’re,” not “Your,” Sucket Bucket

And when will this hypocritical support of Wolf end? Never, apparently.

Wolf has his positive points, but at best he is a mediocre writer, a middle-of-the road interesting interview, and a less than average objective observer of facts.

      • There shouldn’t be alcohol in the coaches offices either. Parse away spin away. The innuendo comes from perception and is reasonable here. Do you know for certain that alcohol didnt get to the players? No players at the rally on Saturday had a drink. Its pretty clear THEY werent drunk. Lack of leadership plain and simple. I wont be an apologist like many on this blog.

    • I agree – the way it was reported, it seemed as if the players were busting out the 6-packs with coaches after the games. That should have been clarified more promptly.

  5. Cutty Sark said he does not have a drinking problem, would not reveal the medication and he would seek treatment. What is he seeking treatment for if he doesn’t have a problem?

    • Capt. Steve is going through a divorce, stressful. He ‘s coaching a big time program and is in a very stressful, hectic time of year. Ok, maybe he’s taking something to manage the stress, blood pressure or whatever. He took a drink at the party without thinking. He needs help to manage the stress in his life. Hey Urban Meyer had to take a break due to the stress. If that is what it is with Cuty Sark then let him get the help he needs. He stays the head coach as long as he can effectively do his job. they are removing the booze from the coaches locker room. Enough with the crucifixion by the press and social media. People can get help and still go to work every day.

    • Sark thinks he does not have an alcohol problem but sounds like those around him (Haden etc.) believes he does. Sark saying he doesn’t think he needs to go to rehab but I will have meetings to find out if he has a problem sounds like, Haden is making Sark go through counseling.

Any addiction counselor will tell you that Sark is a classic Alcoholic.

The man needs help! Hope the next headline isn’t “Sark arrested for Drunk Driving”

      • Unless you live or work with Sark you have no idea if he has a problem or what that problem might be.

        • You are correct in this statement. However, the problem is now of public record. A response from USC’s administration is required one might think?

  6. One of the major signs of Alcoholism is denial and excuses that blame other things rather than Alcohol for improper behavior.

Sarkisian does not need to be punished he needs help. Too bad he does not admit to his obvious alcohol problem…because first step in recovery is admitting that you are an alcoholic.

Medicine is not Sarks problem…His alcoholism is.

    • Agree with you on your points. However, I think only he can diagnose himself as an alcoholic if he is one. Im happy for him to take an LOA and come back ready to go. That would be true leadership from USC here. However, the school is covering its butt to continue the donation (I mean drinking) culture to which its addicted.

  7. Mr Wolf:
I watched the press conference and notice all the important reporters got in questions except you? What happened?

    JW

    • Yes, and he blamed himself, under the influence of medication and alcohol… I also believe with the support of others he will be talking to professionals concerning his relationship with alcohol. At this point its his personal life,: let the USC powers and the professional help work their course ..TMZ can move on.
      SW report Football…
      Be a ……..Man, show respect.

  8. Making Sark go out unprepared line that is known in PR / Crises Management as a “Press-A-Lone”

Someone wants to see him walk the plank.

Circus Vargas! The big top is back!

    • His apology is deleting his tweet as if it didn’t exist. Scott lacks any integrity to own up to his false reporting.

    • When is the Dr.Rachel Maddow of Inside USC going to apologize to Scott for her misdiagnosis on Bryce Dixon returning to the USC football team?

      • The game’s not over till the fat beat writer sings. Translation for morons: the case is still pending.

  9. Note to football recruits and their parents:
Don’t get on the SC Bus, the driver has been drinking.

  10. and he did up/downs as a punishment administered by the players…ok, here’s hoping Sark takes this thing seriously and truly does seek out some help but all I heard was denial on his part

  11. Sark can’t afford to go into rehab now. He’s been given a huge break by the USC powers-that-be and hasn’t been suspended or fined. He’s laid the blame conveniently on “meds” (aspirin for all we know), but wants it all to go on as his little secret. Suddenly, while usually overtalking everything, he’s super vague and evasive. Obviously, he’s owning up to no problem here outside of stupidity, which is what we’ve all been worried about all along.

Who knows what his real problems are? It’s obvious he has a few. I’m only worried about one. His offense, which is filled with stars, looks like crap, just like many times last year – especially when it counted.

Overall, a very weak performance by Sark. Even I don’t drink if I’m on medication, especially when I’m preparing to speak at length at Salute to Troy after a tough day. Some guys are just plain dumb.

    • You speak at the Salute to Troy too?

He is doing treatment, not rehab. HUGE difference. That could mean weekly therapy to discuss his divorce for all we know. Won’t know more until it’s leaked or discussed, if it even does.

  12. i have spent the morning analyzing the video of Seven Shot Sark’s “apology”. and after detailed inspection, even i was shocked by the results: at key points in the presser, BorrOcho’s body language depicts intense deception:

:45 secs mark– when he says he “will be working” on his behavior he subconsciously shakes his head “no” while saying it. this is recognized to be a classic subconscious indicator the person making the statement is not being truthful.

at 1:54– he says “I’m sorry” and again, subconsciously shakes his head “no”

at 2:45– when asked what happened, says he took “meds and alcohol” again, he subconsciously shakes his head “no”.

these are classic red flags for any interrogator. any experienced police detective will corroborate this. the Cadre will CONTINUE to monitor the situation and provide SCIENTIFIC analysis based on EMPIRICAL data.

    #CadrePsyOps

  13. Wow,
His performance at the press conference must be a real confidence builder for St. Pat and and Max. By the way, where were Pat & Max?
Good news that Sark has “disciplined himself already” Great leader.

  14. I believed him and suppose I was convinced – I just thought his approach & his general affect was just a little “casual”…. he responded to a serious question – can’t remember exactly what it was – with a “sure!” I think he needed to be more demonstrative, but as a general proposition, I think the team is still in good hands with him as HC.

    • Did you know Yosemite and the surrounding acreage is for sale? I can get you a super deal. My brother-in-law has the silent listing.

  15. I want to thank borrOcho for sobering up long enough to stand there and issue a STERN lecture to everyone about the DANGERS of meds and booze. “The moral of the story” as he calls it.

    always the teacher, eh, borrOcho???

    #FlimsySoapBox

  16. BTW Klownster’s what’s Sark doing about the Klown U O/L? Has he located anyone willing to block? Is Sark planning to move AJ to left tackle?

  17. I’m not buying that Clowns BS, I guess he and his Lawyers think the drugs and alcohol story will take some of the heat off of Sarkisian, but it actually puts him in a denial category . His behavior fits the reputation he had up in Washington, and Pat Haden failed to do his background check, and probably because Sarkisian was a USC guy .

    • On ESPN’s College Football report they were stunned the players are acting like the adults and meted out punishment while Pat Haden did zero.

  18. I think this is one of those rare times you have to chuck football considerations out the window. I was involved in a situation with someone close who was an alcoholic and had to go through all the stages and it took years. For alcoholics, the volume of alcohol or frequency is not the issue, it’s the reason for drinking in the first place. If it’s a mood stabilizer/enhancer then you’re clinical, even if you only have one light beer at a time. The underlying problems with alcohol are psychological and emotional. The fact that medication is tied in makes this all problematic. With the stresses of a divorce, issues with raising your own kids in that environment, plus running a large and complex endeavor under 24/7 media scrutiny, USC’s first and foremost responsibility is not to the program, wins/losses or even the players. It’s to the person in trouble. Whether or not he is suspended or removes himself is beside the point. If he has to seek counseling to ascertain if there is an issue, you can bet your rent there is an issue. Sark needs to step away, not put a time limit on it and take care of himself, his family and get himself right in the head before he gets subjected to the same situations. It undoubtedly cause a lot of consternation in football land, but at this point, that really is irrelevant. I’m seen what alcohol can do. It’s slow, insidious, secretive and long-lasting. Anyway, I feel sorry for him and only wish him the best.

  19. He is obviously sober now to know he couldve and almost fu**ed up his career in one evening. He seems really shaken by the reality of what the aftermath could have been. Now he was lucky enough to not be suspended. I believe his words. His actions following through are another thing. I know I kid around as much as the next guy on this site, but I mean it when I say Sark better walk the straight line with me. I’m still a fan who wants his school represented with class, so if any kind of incident happens again…then I can’t be so kindly when it comes to Sarkisian at USC. Now he has to coach, keep his head on straight and don’t make the people who stood by him look like idiots. I hope he can get some kind of help along the way. This might not be over, but I’m pulling for Sark.

  20. I may be over cautious, but I have never mixed meds with alcohol. The reason being that possess the ability to read and understand the warnings. The question then becomes how could a college professor (coach) be unable to do likewise?

It remains to be seen whether this hurts recruiting. Do parents trust a man who doesn’t heed warnings? And heaven forbid if this coach ever gets in an accident while under the influence of mixed meds- how many burpies is that worth?
