USC In College Football Playoff?

KESSLER.SWORDHere’s my story on USC’s expectations for this season.

Excerpt: The football program and fans are starved for national success and what they feel is USC’s rightful place among college football’s elite . . . Can the coaching staff avoid late-game collapses or losing to teams it is expected to beat? Last season the Trojans suffered two losses to teams it was favored to beat by double digits (Boston College, Arizona State). Link here

  1. The above link to the blogger’s “analysis” is exhibit A to why he will never see a Red Smith Award let alone make it beyond the DN

  2. Barkley traded to the Arizona Cardinals for 7th round conditional draft pick… You rah rah’s could drive down to Phoenix to watch him hold the clipboard and signal in plays!

    • May not be much to watch but I’ll bet you would love to get paid what Matt is getting to hold a clipboard and signal plays!

      • That’s ok, if you qualify professional employment as holding a clipboard and standing around doing nothing or sitting at the end of the AZ bench for a big check .

        • Hopefully not standing around doing nothing. Hopefully, he’s learning as much as he can about football and if things don’t pan as a player he’s takes a nice nest egg and parlays that into come other career. So in your world unless you are a superstar in the NFL you are a loser? NFL stands for Not For Long, very few become stars, these guys better have a plan for after football.

  3. Who thinks Steve Sarkisian will ever get USC to the playoffs , and actually win a game ? Not only will he have to defeat the likes of a Urban Meyer when he gets there, but he will have to defeat most Schools in the Pac 12, along the way. I don’t care how many 4 and 5 star players he signs, it will never happen. Because there’s more to winning a championship then talented players. The team has a mediocre coaching staff, and ZERO Leadership, and not to mention at least half the coaches in the conference can out coach Sarkisian.

    • Fred, my sentiments exactly. I’ve said from day 1 that Sarkisian is Lane Kiffin with a better personality, and USC will not reach the level we all want them to with him at the helm. On a more serious note, will you please stop posting negative comments about Sarkisian and USC. You’re really going to upset Jackie, and we just can’t have it.

      • Yes he is, and I think he’s a decent coach, but I just don’t think he’s championship material, but time will tell.

    • Urban Meyer. Definitely a good maybe great coach. But remember that Ron Zook left him in Florida with a #1 recruiting class to play with and #1 QB Chris Leak to play with. And Jim Tressel left Meyer with a team coming off a cotton bowl win and couple of top 10
      Recruiting classes. Just Sayin.

      • Let’s not forget Urban Meyer built Utah into a national power, and defeated Alabama in the 2004 Sugar Bowl . And that’s when Utah was in a weak Mountain West Conference . So Meyer is no joke, please believe me!

          • Pat Haden had a chance to hire Penn States James Franklin, but Franklin said Haden never reached out to his agent, so he eventually accepted the Penn State job. And guess what ? The espn College game day crew, along with the national media, are giving Franklin rave reviews about the job he’s doing . So once again the USC athletic department bobbled another one…lol

          • I don’t think you hand James Franklin the keys to USC. Yes he was successful at Vandy, but never pulled any upsets such as Bama, Florida, or Auburn. And correct me if I’m wrong but the Big 10 is very manageable. Not saying Sark is the guy. Just saying I don’t feel Franklin was deserving of the USC job. Don’t bite my head off, but I’d even give the job to Ken Norton Jr. before Franklin. He’s been in the college game. Coached closely with Pete, knows the the recruiting landscape, and knows what it means to be on both sides of the Crosstown rivalry. I don’t know but the coaching field was very slim pickings.

          • Maybe not, but I will agree on Ken Norton Jr. because he’s his on Man, and has nothing to prove to anyone, he’s the type of coach that let’s his actions speak for themselves. Unlike Pete Carroll’s other two USC disciples, who are power hungry arrogant and a little bit insecure, and never deserved the chances that were presented to them., especially Lane Kiffin .

        • Still. It was the WAC or Mt West. Beating BYU, Fresno St. and beating a rebuilding Alabama team doesn’t mean he’s a god. Its an admirable feat. And I’m not saying he he’s not a good coach, but he was very lucky to not have to rebuild Florida or Ohio St.
Now it’s well known that Nick Saban actually rebuilt LSU and Alabama.

  4. Maybe Wolf is right and the fans are starved for national success….. I think we are more interested in not being an embarrassment as a program. We will all have to fight on through the Sark era…. hopefully it is over soon.

  5. One could attribute the losses last year to a team that was young, inexperienced, under conditioned and under manned. They should be better this year but their division opponents will be better. SC is still not at full strength. SC will not go undefeated, expect a couple of frustrating losses. We will get a better idea of this team and the coaches in a little over 3 weeks.
