USC Question Of The Day

USC.STANFORD.DEFENSE

USC returned 7 defensive starters and added two players ranked in the top 25 (Iman Marshall, Porter Gustin). Not to mention all the other freshmen and even getting players back like Lamar Dawson. So is there an explanation other than coaching for allowing Stanford 41 points?

  1. David Shaw is a spectacular coach. Sark is climbing an uphill battle with a difficult past and a tough future ahead. Sark and company are still putting their imprint on the Trojans and the more people realize realisitc expectations the better we all will be. Did everyone forget we won a bowl game last year and will likely win another this year. Stanford is always a rival and plays us tough. Hats off to them. Our defense is growing and looking better with each practice. Living an alternative lifestyle has taught me patience and understanding. We all could learn something from that. Even Fred could understand that as he floats in the same boat.

  2. None of those 7 were Leonard Williams who could shut down the middle and spread out the run game. All the freshmen are exactly that, Freshmen! Not as strong/conditioned/experienced as an Upper classman. Lets hope they get better, soon, as in Saturday.

    • Good to know someone else out there understands that Sark can coach us to the promise land. 8 wins and a bowl game is the goal I also believe in. Having an open mind is the spice of life. Cheers! Fight On! 😉

      • 9-4 was last years record. I expect better this year. I also suspect Stanford is better than the Northwestern game. We will know more Saturday night. Leonard Williams anchored the defense last year. Wilcox needs to figure out how to compensate for his loss in a hurry.

  3. Keep in mind Arizona state started 9 freshman against USC last season with 2 being redshirts , and guess who won ? So once again , the Trojans have a horrible coaching staff .

    • Same staff that beat Stanford last year. Easy to blame the staff. There are a number of factors at play – you won’t hear them from Scottie over the last few days. Gary P has nailed them.

    • Here comes the sky is falling Fred. Keep a chin up buddy. All is not lost. We won a bowl last year and will look to win another this year.

      • Why-so-Serious…

By winning 7 games, “any” College Football team qualifies for a bowl game !

If Trojan fans care only about winning “7” games then Trojan fans, that’s what you will get !!

        So…

Then get used to “not” being a Top-25 team and also get used to being a mediocre football team, and with that watch “all” the “elite” recruits go elsewhere !

It used to be that the least expected bowl for USC was the Rose Bowl, but I guess now that the Astrobluebonnet bowl is sufficient…

        ?

        • Rick,
Those days are over. Don’t you remember the NCAA caught us cheating? Now that we are finally clean, 7-8 wins a year will be a success. We have a great coach leading us and we will be bowling every year. FIGHT ON!

        • Rick your so adorable. Please dont forget we have that same QB coach now as our Head Coach who led our Trojans to victory in 2003.

  4. Yes to answer the question… The only other explanation that comes to mind is that Staford played well.
There is always the overrated angle but that’s for the trolls to point out and I don’t believe it.
My crystal ball tells me if the defense doesn’t shape up things will get ugly in a hurry around USC

    • Stanford played well because the USC gameplan wasn’t good enough. You cannot tell me Stanford had better talent on that field a week ago player for player. But they do have a great offensive line. So why didn’t Wilcox line up 4 down linemen instead of only 3 most of the game and rarely blitzed in rushing Hogan to throw before he wanted to? Like Northwestern did a few week back? That my friend is why Stanford scored that many points.

  5. Cravens/Jackson are the only returning starters that would start on any of top tier Pac 12. The rest are meh. Lamar Dawson would be covering kickoffs at UCLA

  6. Wilcox was a poor DC at Washington and Sark brought him along. Now he is a poor coach at USC. So what else is new….

  7. “So is there an explanation other than coaching for allowing Stanford 41 points?”

    [JUSTIN WILCOX] !!!

  8. I would say sanctions came into play, also the drought has its effects. A lot of rotation makes it hard for guys to come together.
If Sark is slurring his words at practice perhaps guys are not getting the full benefit of his coaching prowess. In other words, who knows at this time of the season, other than Fred.

  9. Yes I’ll answer this. Our defensive line is average at best and arguably our second best defensive player was out.

While we have a lot of great pieces in place defensive line is not one of them and that is a critical piece.

Lastly, if we truly believe that PAC 12 is the first or second best conference in America you cannot think Stanford was a gimme game unless you think they are bottom three in the conference. Our top nine can beat anyone in our conference any week. Ask UCLA last year.
