USC-ASU Stat Of The Day

Kody Kohl

This picture about sums up Arizona State’s performance against USC. By the way, lost amid the lopsided nature of the game was Arizona State rushing for 182 yards. Even Arkansas State rushed for 208. Idaho is the only team to rush for less than 182 against USC.

  1. I was particularly impressed with our 76 yard rushing game. Guess we are keeping it under wraps until the P-12 playoff game.
Nice touch to have Madden run E-W so much. We lull future opponents into a false sense of security, then Bam!…between the tackles.
I also hear tell that Greene can actually catch the rock…assuming it is ever thrown to him.

    • Never mind that ASU was blitzing LB’s in the run lanes on every play to stop the run. We gashed them with HUGE gains as a result of this with short dump offs. That is the beauty with Helton calling the plays we are not doing something just because it looks good in stats column after the game.

      • Exactly… Helton and Kessler simply took what the defense gave them.. it would have been idiotic not to

        • What, you mean coaches should make adjustments on the fly to the game plan? I thought this staff was incapable of that.

    • Well we saw Steven Mitchell have a hard time catching, but the complaint was, he wasnt getting the ball enough. Now we know why

      • Not just a hard time catching the ball, but he ran some horrible routes, which botched up the timing between him and Kessler…

  2. It would be ironic if I started to b&m about everything Scott did wrong. Here goes anyway: Putting a player on blast with that picture, knowing that it is a kid, not a pro, who has been hit a few too many times who is going into a severe mode of instinctive fear at being hit over the middle from his blind side… so much for Scott always sticking up for kids in CFB. 😉

    • Scott is a coward…..and posting a less than flattering pic of this kid is indicative of how low Scott will go for a cheap laugh….not amusing, Scott…..Go ahead and keep posting your childish pics of Wilcox with his hands placed in a choke sign…keep posting your pic of Sark jumping for joy all over Haden…. heck, you even got a new one this last game with Sark jumping into Delvon Simmons… but leave the kids alone, Scott…..

  3. This Wilcox defense leaves the middle of the field open.. Middle of the field pass plays and middle runs…

Only Pac-12 team that has given up more plays 10+ yards than USC’s 59 is Oregon who has given up 62.. Only difference is teams are not scoring on USC

Wilcox is still running the “bend but dont break” offense, and it looks bad statistically

    • I dunno, Stanford scored quite a bit. ASU didn’t bend but not break.

ASU just made a lot of really glaring mistakes, the turnovers on very badly overthrown balls, a blown block and fumble at our goal, a fumble by a kid waving around the ball who should not have even tried to return it… Those, turnover points, even ignoring ASUs blown FG attempts were the difference of the game point wise.

Our offense did what it was supposed to, especially when we put Adoree in. Our defense wound up looking better on the scoreboard than it played.

      • ASU blitzed way too much, leaving one on one opportunities in space…. once they dropped into zone coverage, they seemed to keep things in front of them… and losing their All-Pac-12, 2nd Team center didn’t help matters either…

        • ASU made the right calls as far as blitzing is concerned, they just didn’t have the personnel to do it, they would coral him in the pocket, but because of sloppy tackling he would get away and make a play down field .

          • How about give Kessler some credit for using his feet! Jeeze, do you eat rat’s meat for breakfast? Why so negative?

          • One player, the guy with the cast on his arm for ASU, got Kessler in his grasp for a sack twice alone, and couldn’t make it happen. So that doesn’t take away from Kessler, but it is what it is.

          • There were situations where his feet benefited him, but did you not hear the commentators say that ASU were poor tacklers ? You had to hear it, because we were watching the same game, unless you were there in person. Kesslers is a mobile quarterback, without a doubt, I won’t argue that point.

          • Something about giving up 41 points to a team that lost the Northwestern. If this team beats ND then I’ll start buying in.

  4. Steve Sarkisians offense covers up the deficiencies of Bob Connelly, and the regression of his offensive line, because they don’t have the ability to fire off the ball, which is something they did last year under a different coach. USC is very fortunate they played a very weak ASU team, who’s quarterbacks was off target all night long . I don’t know too much about their next opponent (Washington) , but if their passing game is decent , im sure they will present problems for SC . And I’m pretty sure the Huskies running game is just as effective as Arkansas State’s was .

  5. SC’s defense has given up an average of 164 yds per game, which is 6th in the conference. Yes the Idaho numbers skew the stat but Wolf is really trying hard to find something to complain about this week. It’s a bye week, we’re 3-1, Wolf relax have some fun.

  6. Unfortunately this defense still looks like a Monte Kiffin coached defense. ASU only scored 14 points but it would’ve been much more without all their turnovers. As you saw, even though we didn’t have Myles Jacks, we still took care of Arizona easily. Bruins know how to play defense even when we don’t have our best player. When Jacks gets healthy, look out!

    • Hey Boy Band member, do you have a mouse in your pocket?, Because you keep saying, “we”. Myles Jack, not Jacks, is more than likely gone to the NFL after this year, so I don’t think USC will be seeing him any longer.

      • Yes, when “Jacks gets healthy, look out!”, cuz he’s gonna bolt for the NFL to get PAID!!!!

    • Give our a defense a little credit. I’ve been hard on them lately. But those turnovers weren’t gift wrapped. Maybe Plattenburg’s INT is the exception. Sua Cravens does what he does. Played good run defense and caused a fumble. Delvon Simmons had his best game as Trojan and broke through that OLine to cause that fumble and that’s why Hawkins took it 99 yards. So the defense had its moments.

  7. The picture implies that a lot of bad fortune came upon ASU during their loss and it cost them the game. Its been striking me lately that our head coach relies on our defensive coordinator who on execution miscues by the opponents offense to stop drives during the bend don’t break defense we play. Good defensive teams take the ball away and create negative plays. This is what stops most drives in the NFL. You can’t hope for bad execution to win games consistently.

  8. And just one more think if I may say so myself, I thought usc’s offensive line was supposed to be so experienced and deep? The offensive line and the defensive lines on your team will be your downfall. Just saying

    • None of our D-linemen are being double teamed this year… unlike last season, where Leonard Williams commanded the attention of multiple players on the opposing team…..

      • Kenny Bigalow is coming along. He man handled that guard or tackle and took down Berchovici like a child. He needs to be in the lineup more often. That’s his 2nd sack so far on the year. Not a powerful number. But for a kid who’s been sidelined for two years you have be happy and impressed with his production.

        • I keep forgetting about Bigelow…..but he’ll need to develop quickly, along with the freshmen DL, who showed flashes off what they might become….Cameron Smith’s early enrollment is paying dividends for us now, as well…..

          • So far Antuan Woods hasn’t done much up front. As the leader he’s really been a no show. Our DLine still is shaky. But I like the progress from Bigalow, Simmons, Noah Jefferson. The bye week and Washington game should allow more preparation and experience for the younger guys. There should be no more excuses by the time we play ND.

          • I didn’t here a thing about him all week. The day before the Stanford game they said he would be a game time decision, but I don’t remember him playing. I also heard that Marshall has closed the gap and might even start from here on. But I think he was just held out against ASU as a precaution.

          • Also. I hate looking at USC stuff (sites) after a loss, so I might have missed some information on Seymour.

  9. Scott,

Keep digging And you should be able to portray a 42-14 road win as a completely negative thing.

  10. Wolf, stat of the day? For 3 weeks you’ve brought up USC’s bad third down percentage. BUT, we were 8-11 with Kessler in the game on third down against ASU. Not so big of a head scratcher is it?
