I mentioned yesterday Cody Kessler is currently eighth in Bovada’s Heisman Trophy odds at 25/1. On the surface, it seems low when he has the No. 2 QB rating (201.2) in the nation. So here’s three reasons: 1. ) USC lost a game. 2.) Some of Kessler’s biggest pass plays were shorter passes turned into big plays by JuJu Smith-Schuster/Adoree Jackson. 3.) USC might be viewed as a system offense, much like Texas Tech, which used to plug in quarterbacks who produced gaudy numbers.
There is a committee that selects the Heisman. All this other stuff is fluff for sports writers to beat us with. Lighten up on all the polls and conjecture Wolf, do real football stuff for a change.
So Scotty, SC is an offensive system and Baylor and TCU are not? It is all about wins and losses. If SC gets its act together and makes into the final 4, I guarantee Kessler will be in the Heisman mix.
He is going to have to put some numbers and wins over some good teams , not the usual CU or Idaho garbage … what’s his sig win clutch game ? Coming soon Utah , ND , Cal , Oregon , ucla
Kessler is a gamer. 15 tds to one int. Thats some serious production. Hes hurt by scizophrenic play calling leading to poor clock management and a defense susceptible to giving up 40+ pts a game. Heisman or not, we’re lucky to have that guy on our team.
BCS or Bust!!!
Takes sacks , doesn’t throw it downfield … Kiffin/Sark stats
Take away the sacks from the Ark St game which were mostly the O-line’s fault and Kessler is pretty damn good at eluding sacks
4. It’s way too early to look at Heisman candidates. Kessler will have plenty of exposure to show his stuff in big games. Let’s look at this in a month.
How can USC be a system offense when this system has only been in place for one full season? How can it be a system offense when Cody is the only QB who has played in it? Is the author saying Sark’s offense is a system offense where you can plug anyone in? If so, there was no evidence at Washington of that. We certainly don’t know if that’s the case at ‘SC after one year and one QB. How could the heisman voters be thinking that?
Is the author simply just trying diminish Cody’s accomplishments by suggesting something so inane??
Yeah, that Carson Palmer is a system quarterback.. yeah, that’s the ticket
I’d say Wolf is spot on re. Kessler’s chances and what may be impacting his being considered seriously for the award – good post.
Steve Sarkisian insist he has no system, but he sounds like a fool when he says it, because nfl scouts, and college football analyst say otherwise. He has never produced an nfl caliber quarterback as a head coach, and the one he coached his first year at Washington (Jake Locker)was a first round bust for the Tennessee titans.
The player has to take some responsibility for that. Leinart was one of the greatest college QBs in history. So he messed around in the Arizona desert. Not Sark’s fault.
Sometimes students of the game can come from across town. Since Mr. Wolf mentioned 2003 recently, it reminds me of Chandler Palmer who at this point of his senior season was much more of a potential guy than a Heisman candidate. But based on the strength on mustering his team past a historically dominant UCLA, he captured the nation’s fancy and his rags to riches tale enraptured the voters leading to the Heisman. Too early to call this race for Kestler, sadly Rosen and Perkins are going to split the UCLA vote.
Kessler is another Ty Detmer. no pass longer than five yds from scrimmage. dink dink dink. Sark has reverted back to that old BYU system. Petey would throw deep on the first play of many halves just to make a point. i remember the first play a game we lost to them and i was yelling watch the bomb on the first play….then buhh-bam!!

Bucket. You’re arguing against a school who’s had 7 Heisman Trophy Winners. 3 since 2002. Cody’s gonna have chances.
i dint say he had no chance. if he wins it, he should saw in two and give JuJu half.
#AndAQuarterToWolf
I’m ok with that
hey wolfman, a trOXan today showed me the Pious Passer’s Facepage and it shows him in a Eagles hat!!!
further, the caption says:”I play quarterback, but that doesn’t define me.”
so true! he can’t play quarterback very well, and he is much more accurately defined by the A-Bar Hit at the venerable Rose Bowl!!!
HAWR-HAWR!!!
#BLASTfromThePast
Given the recent actions of Pat O’Hadden towards UCLA legend Myles Jack, I would like to apologize on behalf of Bruins Nation for that comment.
are you kidding? the trOXans hate Paddy O’Hadden
while everyone else loves him!! read this blog anytime after they lose!!!
#RatsOfAFeather
He’s an American Treasure!
tell it to your mob of traitorous trOXans who i’ve seen even insult his family in the most insipid manner imaginable.
#SawItWithMyOwnEyes
imaginable? Come on, you sound like an attorney in court.
You mean the face mask unnecessarily planted into his back from the blindslide, when his hands, which if extended would be three feet closer and would have done the job without causing the injury? So the Karma plays out, speaking of injuries, and now the injuries have visited your house. UCLA will loose to Stanford, Utah and USC, and will loose at least one more. Washington State most likely..
for a guey named cupcake you really know how to play dirty….

Scottie, it means all these polls and gambling odds are totally worthless.
Follow the money.
Kessler’s thrown a good number of deep touchdown passes, from last season to this season. Juju and Adoree are playmakers no doubt, but Kessler can throw the deep ball well. That’s not even a question.
Would love to see what the odds were for the last few Heisman winners before Oct. The Heisman is won in the last 6 games, not the first 6.
Tough to win the Heisman when your not even best qb or even close to it … In your conference
That would be the Cal kid
Kessler is Barney all stats vs bad teams
