How About Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham?

WHITTINGHAMA former USC coach I spoke to recommended Pat Haden pursue Utah coach Kyle Whittingham.

“He’s drama free,” the coach said. “That’s exactly what they need. He’s also a hot name right now and probably could not turn it down.”

  1. Kyle Wittingham would be a GREAT hire. Seems like a no nonsense type coach. His teams always play hard and disciplined. Utah has seen continuous success since he took over for Urban Meyer and he’s already beaten Alabama before, our first opponent for 2016! And most importantly (sarcasm) from what I’ve seen he’s good with the media.

    • I am not upset about that idea.. He is a prove HC and has a ton of experience.. I would like to see USC get away from hiring young Head Coaches..

  2. Not sure his LDS affiliation will fly with boosters. Although after Sark it might be the right choice.

    • Boosters aren’t hiring him. A man’s religion has no bearing on how good of a coach he is. Other than the fact you would never see him drunk, period, anywhere.

      • Yea, booster have nothing to do with who is hired? Guess you drinking a little early today, He was considered last round of hiring and his religion was a factor in his elimination.

  3. Wasnt too long ago Wittingham was rumored to be gone. Have to see waht happens when Booker is gone and what a Fifth year QB ? Think USC can get a lot of coaches although current situation of instability is not helpful. Gary Patterson coming from a private institution would be a good fit

    • Highly doubt Mora would ever trade his star-status at UCLA for the burning hot seat at SC with the alumni expectations, etc.

      • Alumni expectations? They hired Kiffin and Sark! Anyone with a pulse who’s not drunk could do better.

        • It’s a bona fide Clown College now days… But Paddy Boy has chased UCLA coaches before, one more embarrassing rejection at this point probably won’t mater to him.

  4. I would guess that the whole USC circus, (alums, media, administration) is too high maintenance for Whitt.

  5. While the situation is embarrassing, this is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to USC in regards to a coaching search. Sark has taken himself out of the picture and probably Haden with him. USC has months to look for a replacement. I know that they apparantly didn’t use that time wisely when Kiffin was fired mid season, but hopefully they’ve learned their lesson. They can now vet any coach they want: college, pro, or in a broadcast booth (Gruden).

The players no longer have to worry about their coach being drunk on the sidelines. Looking back at the situation, it’s no wonder Kessler and the offense played so terribly against Washington. Regardless of Sark’s demons and personal struggles, if he was really drunk on the sidelines vs. ASU, the players had to have begun tuning him out. How can a coach expect discipline, focus, and all-in effort from his players when he’s trashed during a game! Hopefully the offense can go back to playing fast and loose under Helton and pull out some upsets over ND, Utah, and UCLA.

    • ??? Helton is the guey who kept passing when the running game was freaking rolling against U-Dub!!!

He might be the worst of the trOXans brain dead coaching staff!!

His speaking ability is certainly lacking as well, watching Paddy Boy squirm and fidget while Helton tried to speak was a sight…he sounded like Kevin Mcarthy.

      • The offensive line coach is the worst of the bunch. Wilcox has proven he is unqualified, Tee Martin is great, as are the others. Helton did coach them to a bowl game victory last season.

      • Upchuck, did you think before you wrote? Doubt it. You have to realize that the meetting yesterday was on the fly and they did not have time to prepare. They were thinkng off the cusp and not to dwelve into the situation too much till they could get everything in order.

        • Thinking off the cusp?
          Dwelve?
Check your computer, PT I think your anti-spelling/grammar feature turned on.

  6. If he’s drama free, how will he fit in (and fight on) at USoCal?

    It’s just not a fit.

    • Don’t bring in a young assistant to HC the best program in college ball. That has already failed miserably.

    • Witnessed his behavior on a flight we shared to FSU in 1998. The airport police was waiting for him when we landed. Made Sarks tirade last month at Tribute to Troy seem tame. Probably not the best choice right now.

  7. You see LA Times finally reporting on Sark’s drinking at UW? What, two full months AFTER Wolfie was on it? You go Scott!

    • I know you can’t always listen to rumors, but bloggers up in WASHINGTON have been blogging about Steve Sarkisians drinking, and different women before USC every hired him. That’s one of the reasons why I always agreed with everything Scott Wolf talked about. That’s why many people at SC don’t like Wolf, because he speaks the truth.

  8. Wolfie, Wolfie, you’ve got it all wrong. The Capper wants to keep this in the family. He suggested the triumverate of Yogi Roth-Brennan Carrol, a.k.a. Fred Corleone, and Rocky Seto. Sounds like a winner to me.

  9. I’ve always been impressed with college coaches that do more with less . That’s why I would welcome Kyle Whittington with open arms. He’s established, and coaches tough physical football. ..enough said!

  10. How about Trojan fans give Clay Helton a chance ?

How about the USC brass find Clancy Pendergast and put him back at his job, Defensive Coordinator, and ditch Justin Wilcox as quick as possible !

    Clay & Clancy = A+ !!!

    Problem solved !

    FightOn

    • It’s a pretty obvious choice to me too – least disruption with players and their families since he knows them already, and least risky – as Pat himself said – Clay is “undefeated” at 1-0

He should get a chance, especially if he gets the team to focus and win out – then you pretty much have to give him the job – i love the idea of canning that idiot o-line coach connelly, that guy is ruining a good thing and a former strength of the team! Give Clancy a call, put Wilcox as a special teams coach or something

      Fight On

  11. I don’t want Pat Haden involved in any further coaching hires. Hasn’t he done enough to show he is in over his head? Name one decision he has made that turned out anywhere positive?

  12. Nice thought, but no chance Whittingham is a ‘good fit’.

Mark Dantonio, for a career capper ?
Kevin Sumlin or James Franklin ? Already passed on them.
Dan Mullen ? Pat Fitzgerald ? Or one of the Matt’s, Rhule or Campbell ?
Rich Rod, or anybody else not named Todd Graham ?

  13. Some good news. I just checked and Florida Gulf Coast does not have a football team. That takes one of Haden’s options off the table.

And as a Bruin, Whittingham at SC could be the one that would scare me the most.

  14. Kyle Wittingham is already building a National Championship team in Utah. What we need is a coach with real life College and NFL experience. Someone who understands the Pac 12 better than most. Someone like Dave Wannstedt. the guy works for the Pac 12 Network, is spot on in every analysis, built a strong Pitt team from the ground up, and has solid NFL credit as well. We need Wannstedt.

    • That’s just crazy talk. There are at least 2.6 billion other people better suited to be the head coach at ‘SC. No offense to you, but that was officially the weirdest name I’ve seen thrown out there.

  15. Whittingham is probably one of the best coaches in college ball. His teams play together, are motivated, and fundamentally sound. He manages the game well and comes in well prepared. He makes sound adjustments during the game and hires excellent assistants. He would be a great recruiter for USC also. He would come if everything was right. He sure has a lot of talent to utilize.

  16. He couldn’t turn it down? Only someone who doesn’t know much about Whittingham would say that. Watch him.

  17. Could not turn it down? Dude turned down his Alma Mater (BYU) to coach Utah. He’s not going anywhere.

  18. Don’t lose track of Clay Helton as he knows the system better than many.
If he could change out a few coaching staff members for the balance of the season, this season might end up being wonderful, or not!
If Clay lasts through the season, don’t forget Sean Peyton in New Orleans.
The one I like best is in East Lansing, and don’t you think Harbaugh would not love to congratulate the Trojans on their best hire, EVER!
