USC Morning Buzz: What Does Escape From Colorado Mean?

JUJU.COLORADO

USC escaped with a victory over Colorado, with JuJu Smith-Schuster (above) making a TD catch. But the narrow victory only muddled the coaching situation. Here is my analysis from Boulder.

Excerpt: “USC needs someone to give the Trojans a kick in the pants before kickoff. That means (Pat) Haden, who everyone assumes is on the way out, needs a strong final act. Sources inside USC said he is not quitting, even though a rumor spread across the nation this week.

“What USC needs to do is convince someone bold, like Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, to move to the big city. About $8 million a year, a mansion in Palos Verdes and a driver to shuttle Stoops back and forth should do the trick.”

  1. So USC dominates the 3rd quarter of games? …is that a compliment, Scott? …could possibly be because of *gasp* halftime adjustments?…..Nawwww…

    • How long has Scottie complained about lack of halftime adjustments, and now he fails to recognize them. We all know Scottie has an agenda – the real question is what did USC do to him to create such animosity?

  2. Scott, no love for the USC men’s basketball team? They looked like they may be better than the 10th best team in the Pac -12. …I’m cautiously optimist about this season.

  3. I agree Scott. Not sure about Stoops, but perhaps. I do agree about Jones. I admit I got caught in the rah rah of the media. He is young and still needs to develop. His blocking is really not good. He is a bright spot in a somewhat dismal season, but he is not an all american just yet. I think we missed Madden last night when we needed short yardage. Davis goes down way to easy, one arm tackles take him down.

    • You mean the same Madden that Scottie criticized for getting the ball in critical third down situations instead of Jones against Cal?

  4. It means USC is 7-3 and going to Oregon next week. Still in the run for Pac 12 title. Nothing more and nothing less. Nothing will happen in coaching situation until December so have fun with all the speculation. This was good road win in tough conditions considering the injuries on D and unstable coaching situation. We had at times 6 Freshman playing on defense.

  5. What should have been an easy win turned into a trap game. Travel on a short week, play on a freezing cold Friday night, and they got the win. Last year might have lost a game like this one and last weeks game for that matter. Let’s hope next week they are better prepared mentally and physically.

    • I really dislike Friday night games. Throws off my whole Saturday. Fridays are for high school games.

  6. Don’t jump off your bandwagon so quickly, Scottie – the Wolf-Helton honeymoon seems over, huh? They got the win on the road against a team that needs a win desperately. The true tests will start on Saturday – @Oregon, UCLA, (Stanford). If he wins all three, he deserves the job. Plain & Simple.

    • He deserves strong consideration and gets the job if there isn’t another exceptional choice. This team is barely winning. They don’t seem to be getting dialed in. Maybe they will next week.

    • Week after week the Trojans come out and nobody knows what team to expect. They are up and down. Helton likes to be liked by the players. What they need is an experienced teacher, not another trainee. This is the hard truth. Helton would do well to go to one of the job openings at seasons end and get experienced at being a head coach at someone else’s expense and let USC build a whole new program with a PROVEN head coach.

  7. Colorado is better than many of us thought. It also shows, once again, that Stanford is the class of the Conference. I don’t see Utah, USC or UCLAbeating Stanford. SC matches up the best with the Trees, IMO.

    • I agree, if they are on their game, motivated and disciplined they could beat Stanford. Problem is getting them to that point.

      • I think Stanford would wear down your D. You are young on D and the D line is not a strength. I would guess a close game at the half and Stanford pulls away. Also, the Ducks are improving and you will be in Eugene.

Ucla has a tough game at Utah who clearly has the inside track and could clinch the South next weekend.

  8. Wolf you two days ago were demanding that Haden make a statement. In your infamous Quick take uno and dos and beyond you felt Haden at any second would step down.Crazy reporting .Sighting your sources inside you alerted us to what was coming down. Then you probably ate another 20 Buffalo wings, did an interview with a blog in Bolder and realized there was a game.
Same thing. We had bad game Colorado was up we were down. We won.!!! We have Oregon game coming. No coaching change this Week, only getting these players to focus, regain intense preparation and kick the Ducks butt.
SW nothing you say will influence who our next coach is.The Stoops rumors have been out now for Three weeks.Football USC vs Oregon next Sat……..

  9. Scottie, is that the same Bob Stoops who USC whipped in the 2005 Orange Bowl? I didn’t see the Sooners kicked in the pants to come out for that game when USC took a 38-10 halftime lead. As usual, your analysis is lacking in facts and substance.

  10. One thing it means is no more prison food. Hyperbole much? Sources vs. Rumors? Are you aware that you are what you eat? Oops, forgot to buckle my seat-belt. Sally’s pilot is very handsome and thorough, he personally checks to confirm that everyone is buckled up before we leave our spot at the fixed base operation. At least my bad has a reasonable explanation.

  11. This team just doesnt look ready to play at the start of the game. Even when they barely beat inferior opponents they seem satisfied. Oregon loses to Stanford today that may just take the wind out of the Ducks for next weeks game against trojans

  12. USC could possibly beat their next two opponents, because Oregon is down this year, and UCLA is no different from Colorado. And if SC is willing to spend $8 million on a coach, why would you give it to Bob Stoops ? Do you realize how long that program has been down ? Stoops should have been fired a few years ago, based on the expectations at Oklahoma, but he’s been getting a pass from the administration.

    • Your right Fred. Why in the world would USC give Bob Stoops 8 million. That would be like playing bingo in Monte Carlo. John Harbaugh makes $7 million a year in the NFL as the 4th or 5th highest paid coach. I think USC could stretch it to $8.3 million for Harbaugh. He’s worth it when you get an overnight turnaround from our current state to a championship contender. It’s no secret that the Ravens want to rebuild. Rumor is Newsome has given Harbaugh permission to look elsewhere. The football gods have given USC the opportunity to grab a Great Football Coach.

        • Harbaugh’s dad has always wanted to see John coaching in college, and his wife wants to live in Los Angeles. It’s an easy call. Make him an offer he can’t refuse!

      • But if Pat Haden is evolved in selecting a new coach, then USC fans better prepare themselves for another STUPID hire that makes no sense. Which is why that Bob Stoops rumor is starting to bother me.

  13. 8 mil to get Bob Stoops LMAO … he is worth about 1 mil and that is only because you have to pay a coach something.
Bob Stoops and 8 mil , what a joke.

  14. BTW, last year Oklahome was 8 – 5 and lost 40 – 6 against Clemson in bowl game. Another brilliant coaching pick by Wolf.

  15. Musburger calls him, “Big Game Bob Stoops” but he loses most of the big games.

    JON GRUDEN

  16. Did anybody say they want Bob Stoops to be coach of USC? He’s dependable, but I’d rather try Brennan Carroll first, at a discount, just to be sure there isn’t any branch on the Pete Carroll coaching tree that isn’t dead.
