USC Morning Buzz: Don’t Forget Those Oregon Connections

WILCOXUSC defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is a former Oregon player. So is linebackers coach Peter Sirmon. And if you read articles on Wilcox when he was at Washington, he enjoys a strong reputation as a player/coach in the Pacific Northwest.

So there are probably some Oregon fans perplexed over the heavy criticism Wilcox has taken at times at USC the past two seasons. And if USC defeats the Ducks, his stature will probably be even higher in Eugene. But will it grow in USC? Probably not.

  1. Duck fans perplexed… Why? Did you ask them what 1+1 is? Show them a toothbrush and ask them what it does?

    • They are a cultivated bunch. Last season cameras caught two duck fans of college age each hitting himself in the head after an Oregon touchdown. American education just doesn’t get much better than this.

  2. If you look at Justin Wilcox’s career , then you will see that he’s just an average coach at best . He originally got a reputation up at Boise State, the place where many assistants, and head coaches go to get false reputations of being a good coach. Well Wilcox is no different, because he did nothing at Cal, Tennessee, or Washington that warrants a $900,000 salary .And when he leaves USC, I guarantee his next stop will be a position coach at less then half the salary he receives, now.

    • Well, considering that USC is a private school, your “guarantee” is a pretty safe bet……

    • He’s had his best talent while at USC. And I think we’d all have to agree he’s be average at best. One thing I will say he’s improved on is our team hasn’t blown and lost games in the 4th quarter like last season. Still very underachieving year.

  3. If the Oregon fans are perplexed, then it is because they don’t know what it is like to win championships. Wilcox may enjoy a good reputation in the Northwest because their standards for championship football are fairly low which matches his coaching acumen. But things are different when you come to coach at USC.

    • You have nailed it. Things are different at USC. That is why only the best PROVEN coach will suffice.

    • Too bad he doesn’t cover politics for the LA Daily News….. it would actually be entertaining…..

      • Scottie as both Republican and Democratic Debate moderator. Our bad boy would break all the rules and get down to the real dirt. No one would survive.

        • He might even ask some insightful questions, such as, “Are the Democrats finally better than the Republicans?”…..

          • I think the questioning would be more along the lines of ‘what position would Petros fill in your administration?’

          • Ah, yes. A position unfilled since Davy Crockett was voted out in 1835 (of course, unlike Davy, if Petros were ever given the option of leaving the Alamo thru the back gates…. yeah, you guessed it).

  4. They can hire him away from us if they want. Oregon is such a defensive powerhouse that I’m sure he’d be welcome.

      • I’ve always liken SW to OZ.
A little man who hides behind curtain and through a microphone shouts redrick…. The wizzard of Wolf

        • “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” ….. an all-time classic line

          • RRR, I love that line for SW……..”Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.”…..great to use when SW goes Tmz on blog.
            Thanks!…perfect!

          • Your comments are both quite informative and or humorus ..always good…..shame they delete randomly.I follow the belief that this blog ,by a truly insightful writer.Who isnt afraid to tell it like it is: good and bad,and who covers the team with insight, and true information would double or triple the followers.
USC sports ! With Football the primary, with great passion. I personaly have interest in all Trojan sports men and Women.

          • Yep. I also follow all SC sports. For sure the three majors. If the volleyball teams in the playoffs on tv I’ll watch.

          • As much as I love Football, Volleyball Women’s and Men’s is closest to my heart. The sport of my youth, Then coached and developed mostly women players. Proud to say I’ve seen 6 girls get rides to USC.Two AA! And 39 total get full rides else where. Frankly in helping the ladies with schools, most time we went to the schools with the best academic and career opportunity. Many times Ivy league and often D 2 great educational opps.
Loved playing the game in college and after in USVBA.

          • My bad. Of course you coached them. That’s pretty cool. Lots of scholarships. Some to SC. Awesome.

          • No bad, your question was good.Coached and Directed on all levels of Club.Club is the route to College.
Yes my daughter was very much apart of that.
Loved that so much with her.
That’s why I mentioned to enjoy every minute with
            your son during the BB
            season.and of course daily.

          • Definitely. A way to great bond with a daughter or son. These kids these days only want to stay indoors and play video games, my son definitely doesn’t have the sporty attitude like I did growing up, he’s not a great practice player, but when the lights go on he plays his best ball in the games. Finding a way to spend time with him is the important thing I take from it all. I’ll probably coach him up to 12 years old.

    • Yeah, we can only hope he lands with a team that is currently good and help them like he did here…

  5. I get who selected the above image, however the writing is clearly that of someone other than the image selector. The image and the words do not match. It’s like a man wearing brown socks with a black suit and shoes. Speaking of which, I have all of my shoes and outfits selected for the Oregon trip. Sally has a “castle in the woods” lined up for our four day weekend.

  6. RIP Mike Taylor..former OT……Taylor played college football at the University of Southern California and was drafted in the first round (tenth pick overall) of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

  7. “So there are probably some Oregon fans perplexed over the heavy criticism Wilcox has taken at times at USC the past two seasons.”

I guess these Oregon fans don’t know how to read the team stats.
