How USC players, fans and skeptics reacted to Clay Helton hire

Here’s a sampling of the reaction to USC’s announcement of Clay Helton as head coach Monday.

    • Dumb post. He was not the answer if you want playoff appearances and championships. Have fun the next few years rooting for mediocrity. It’s okay, you won’t know the difference between that and success, so your small brain will be fine.

      • From you, I’ll take this as a compliment……Chimp is simply an NCAA violation waiting to happen, but you’re too clueless to understand this since your pea sized brain is preoccupied with simply trying to breathe…..

  1. If Helton cans Wilcox and some of the other dead weight on the staff and hires coaches who can actually coach, USC may have found their man. He seems to want to run a power run offense, no complaint there. I would imagine he will want a smash mouth defense as well, no complaint there. The last scoring drive against ucla was pure John McKay, no way Sark or Kiffin would have ever run 10 times in a row, never, they would have been throwing the ball sideways.

    Fight On coach Helton

  2. If you think Wolf is negative and snarky, check out Pat Forde on Yahoo. Wow what a piece of work. All opinion and no facts.

      • I am a Pat Forde fan. I think he is of the school of thought that USC is too bigtime to not go bigtime with a coach–a lot of people have that same opinion. But I don’t think he is a bad writer because he dares to say something negative about USC. I get what he is saying, but I am not certain I agree with his conclusions. Pat thinks he thinks USC should have went bigtime–but he is open to thinking Helton could turn out ok. On the other hand, I think Helton will be fine; but also afraid he could flame out.

  3. LOLOL These comments are EXACTLY the same as what “they” were saying about Pete Carroll !!!

And if the internet existed in 1960, the same thing people were saying about another unknown obscure unproven small college assistant … John McKay.

  4. Email the athletic department to voice your discontent.

Heather Dunn (dunnh@usc.edu). She apparently answers messages for Haden.

  5. On PMS about 45 minutes ago I caught the tail end of Petros discussin the hire with Tim Cates – Cates was apoplectic on why this wasn’t a smart hire what with all the other coaches out there. It is amusing when a honk for one;s rival is so overly concerned about who we hired and the unfairness to others in making that selection.

  6. Surprised at the timing of this. Helton beat a so-so UCLA team that was starting an 18-year-old. He also beat a Utah team that really isn’t that great. What else? Not taking any credit away from him: he definitely outcoached Mora and Co and SC played a much better game vs the Bruins. But it feels like a reward for beating UCLA–which has never been the definition of success at SC (more so at UCLA, but not SC). To me, it’s a better hire than Sark, but much lower level than what I expected–or feared–as a Bruin. I will say, however, that he seems like a much more mature, solid guy than his predecessors.

  7. Pat Haden gets an eight-clap for hiring Clay Helton for the “#1 coaching job in America”! Who is he going to groom to be the next interim coach in two years?
