What About Mark Richt?

Again, there’s nothing wrong with Clay Helton and I’m happy for him. But why didn’t USC at least give a call to former Georgia coach Mark Richt, who was fired last weekend? He won at least 10 games for nine years and won nine games two other times. Georgia went to five SEC title games five times. Yes, he lost to Alabama or whoever else.

But he is also isn’t a coach with West Coast ties or USC ties, so obviously he cannot be a legitimate candidate for the job. Oh well.

  1. Wolf, Helton is the man now. No use crying over spilled milk. Did you ask Haden the very same question that you’re posting here?

    • I would like Helton to reach out to him to be the new OC/QB’s coach if that position opens up after the season

  2. What a passive aggressive POS you are SW. This post has absolutely no value or purpose–other than to blow the dog whistle of Haden haters. But I will play along and provide a reason why Haden didn’t interview Richt. Answer–if he would have hired Richt, Haden knows you would have ripped the hire of a coach who couldn’t win a championship and couldn’t beat his rival. So Haden bowed to the all powerful SW.

      • Not really. If there is a legitimate question it is this -why decide on Helton now and wait to see what other candidates may become available? But an in depth answer to that question can only be obtained by in depth reporting and personal contact with Haden and the decision makers. But SW doesn’t have that access, so he is left with using this blog to snipe at USC. To question why not Richt or why not someone else misses the point–of why decide now. Mentioning a specific coach passed over only churns up emotions but does not advance the story.

        • Richt and USC makes no sense. None. Sorry Mark. You got fired because you were consistently good in an environment that aspires to greatness. Not up USC’s alley, which is the road to greatness – as the Trojans have proven several times.

          • Yup – can’t do it elsewhere why would you be any different in an equally demanding venue

          • So, you hire a coach that might have interviewed for the Buffalo University job if he wasn’t retained!

  3. Mark Richt is another football coach that falls into the Steve Lavin category, because he will win just enough games not to get fired, which is why he lasted as long as he did . And if Steve Sarkisian would have stayed sober, he would have been the same type of coach .

    • Sounds like Clay Helton. Nice religious guy who can coach a little but isn’t great.

    • That is about right on the money with that an ology Fred. Richt’s resume looks better than any unemployed coach at the moment.
All that said I wouldn’t want him, and I’m not bothered in the least bit that SC didn’t give him a call.

  4. SW should start covering ucLA. Its getting old now. His next question is why is the sky blue?

  5. You know what is nice right now? A break from Bucket, owns, Thai, j metaphor, and all those peeps. That is a nice break.

  6. Wait, Georgia went to five SEC championship games five times? So, Georgia went to 25 championship games in 14 years! Best. Coach. Ever.

    Try harder.

Oh, by the way, Karl Dorrell was coaching at UCLA the last tie Richt won the SEC and he’ll have too big of a buy out number when there is a new AD at SC is a year or so.

    • Wow playing 5 games 5 times each, that is impressive. Maybe Richt should have been considered. His players must well conditioned if nothing else to do that!

  7. Any word out there if Helton got offers from others, like Memphis? I suspect Helton did get at least one offer and was ready to fly if not given the SC job this week and nobody better was interested.

  8. Sonny Dykes interviewed for the Missouri job , and wanted take over for Tom Herman if he left Houston . Is the Cal Berkley job that bad ?

    • Well, obviously, it’s not a top job in football. They’re traditionally like SUCLA, perennial also-rans that never quite seem to get there. LOL!

      • Yeah especially the way Mack ‘Jimmah cracked corn’ Brown squealed and whined like a stuck pig back in 2003 keeping Cal out of the Rose Bowl –
I sincerely believe Cal could compete if they ever found a coach that was willing to really work had, recruit hard and stay longer than 5 years

  9. Clay Helton is a nice guy….everybody likes him. But Mark Richt has a proven record of winning. I’m sure they could have found a bunch of other coaches who have a history of being winners but PH didn’t look. He used the lazy method of searching for a coach. How much are they paying this guy to be an AD? Helton may become a great coach but PH should have done a thorough search to replace Sark. That’s what they are paying him for. Is this AD job just an honorary position where he gets paid a big salary for doing nothing?

  10. I hope the first thing Coach Helton does is throw Scott Wolf’s negative attitude rear end off campus and deny him access to the team for force the daily news to get a real journalist to cover USC

    • It’ll never happen… Helton is way too nice of a guy and Scott knows it……

  11. Wolfy logic: 1) Mark Richt never beat Saban and was fired as a result. 2) USC plays Saban next year. 3) Somehow USC hiring Richt would have inspired confidence during the offseason.

    Great choice Wolfy. Just brilliant.

  12. Richt has said he wouldn’t mind being more “hands on” and working directly with players, –i.e., being a coordinator again.

Doubt if Helton would talk to him, but he runs an offense similar to what Helton seems to prefer — a power offense with some elements of tempo.

  13. Wolf, Richt talked about his desire to be more involved with the players in a positions coach or coordinator position. Rumor is he wants to be an OC/QB coach. I am not sure how you can wonder why he was not sought after considering he has under performed and his teams have been a Jekyll and Hyde over the last couple years. You should stop being a drama queen and think before you write.
