Ed Orgeron Update

ORGERON.USCIt appears Ed Orgeron will not be returning to USC, according to sources. The biggest obstacle remains lingering bitterness over his relationship with Pat Haden and his departure from USC in 2013.

USC paid Orgeron more than twice what he currently makes at LSU but the Tigers are expected to improve his contract after the season.

    • Very funny, pardner! You know what else is funny? The fact that there is no way in the world that Ed would expressly state (or even indirectly imply) that he wasn’t coming back to USC because of “lingering bitterness toward Pat Haden.” So where does that leave us? Is it possible that our dear Scottie, knowing that Ed is not returning, decided to just plug in his favorite reason for any unpleasant thing that happens on the Trojan football horizon (i.e., Pat Haden)??

      • You got that right Michael. Pendergast and Orgeron were never in contention to come back and after Scottie milked it for weeks, he now decided to end it.

I suspect Kenechi Udeze might be on track to be the DL coach.

        • Scottie knows how to transform every set of facts into an extension of his favorite thesis of the moment. He’s missing his true calling — politics.
It’s going to be hugely interesting to see if the line plays with more grit and enthusiasm in the Holiday Bowl. My bet is that Udeze and the players fully understand this is Udeze’s audition and will make the most of it.

          • USC loves the inbred thing. I bet Udeze’s already got the job. Just hope Helton doesn’t fail to bring in a big hitter DC and OL coach. Anything’s possible.

          • Re your mention of inbreeding, Jack —-It’s Christmas —let’s leave Petros out of it.
As for DC and OL coaches —if Helton doesn’t score big, we’re fried. I can’t believe he doesn’t understand that. For all his “ah, shucks” post practice interviews, he strikes me as a real smart coach who knows what he needs to be successful.

          • I hope Udezi isn’t judged on one game. Especially a bowl game that the team only practiced for one hour twice. Udezi doesn’t have any real coaching experience, but I read up and seen he’s made three NFL intern positions and they were DLine spots. Even with an inexperienced resume my feeling is Udezi would light a fire under these young players. He sure knows what it takes to become tough defensively, to work at becoming great (remember he lost something like 70 lbs before playing), knows what a program takes to reach championship form. He knows a little something about hitting the QB with 28 career sacks. I wouldn’t mind Kenechi Udezi being the permanent DL coach at all. I’m more worried about the DC, and OL hires.

          • You know what, Sam? I don’t think it’s stretching things one bit to say that the immediate future of USC football depends on what Helton does this January on the DC and OL fronts. [And I hope the reason we haven’t heard anything yet is because he has his sights set on big names who can’t commit just yet].

          • I couldn’t agree more Mike. It’s a little weird that those two hires might be just as important as the hiring of our head coach. They have to be solid hires.

          • Yeah and welcome to Mora booking out of bel-air tech when his five year gig is up and some numb skull NFL owner actually believes what went down in ATL and SEA was not the real deal…

  1. Seems Haden can screw things up even when he does nothing. It is really time to step away from the AD job Haden.

  2. No biggie. It wasn’t serious news two days ago since everyone knew Haden was the judge and jury to all things USC. It’s his world.

    • That was blatantly obvious when ‘somehow’ – ‘someway’ – Steve Sarkisian reminded Haden of John McKay.

Better had Haden found a ‘reclamation’ project he could control for men’s BB than what he chose for football – talk about an ungrateful brat (Sark dawg) barking at its’ daddy (Haden)….go Haden….yeah go and be gone

      • I like Haden, his personality, i appreciate his career as a football player, as a scholar, and for motivating young students and athletes, but it’s time for him to pass the Athletic Director baton to a worthy understudy or someone who is more qualified to run the Athletic department. He belongs at USC. Just not in his current capacity. USC’s three major sports Football, Basketball, and Baseball are all in rebuilding mode at the same time, and I think that’s inexcusable. I really think he should move on ASAP.

        • I too admire Pat and had great hopes when Nikias tabbed him, after sacking Mike Garrett, in 2010.

Had Pat hired anyone other than an assistant under Pete Carooll I believe the animus towards him by many would be far far less – he didn’t. He had a full interview with then Boise St. Coach Peterson and then, with his ‘hey watch the slick move I and I alone thought up’…move hired Sarkisian.

Realizing in late August this pick was a joke at best and unwilling to remove him as 99% of all coaches are – i.e. your record sucks goodbye – no Pat our Pat was suddenly angered with the ‘de rigeur’ “…how dare you!'” of all patricians and foolishly and stupidly, with a law degree no less, sacked him either knowing ore refusing to accept the reality thereof that even a dawg exhaust fool like Sarkisian can’t technically be shown the door w.o. factual hoops being leaped through.

Maybe just maybe Nikias or some other flunky, told Pat Haden of the risk w.o. going through said hoops but I sense no one would dare say such w.o. Nikias approval and alas here we are – a lousy hire than never should have been offered in any way in any manner one of the top five college programs in the nation and yes, Pat Haden can’t stand it.

          • Like most SC fans or SC people, I like Helton too. I’ll even give him a solid run before I start to seriously jump in on him. But Haden didn’t hire the best available coach. He let the players loyalty to Helton make his decision for him, then he got the OK from Nikias and went for the “safe” hire. After everything the program has gone through I think Haden’s decision making is beyond questionable. We went the “easy” route with Kiffin and Sark, and this almost seems similar. He wants to control his coach and the program. Hopefully Helton kicks some a** and we can move on and maybe Haden can move on.

          • Be careful Sam there are a lot of 28th Street frat boys who don’t want to hear such – some post here …

I think Helton is good and I sense we’ll see it next Wednesday – ‘if’ Helton pans out it still is no credit to Haden i.e. he didn’t have the brains to pick a good coach to begin with and on the rebound no one wanted to have to deal with him which made Helton a ‘done deal’….I hope Helton wins and wins big but also that Haden gets out fast – let him go and ‘design’ the Coliseum and shmooze with the LAOOC that are as he is – …. elite and bored.

          • ‘Cannae’ this Wednesday against WI in San Diego and I also sense a sad evening in San Jose for bel-air tech against NE – the Bruins have not heart going into that game tomorrow night.

          • I think we’ll get the job done, but Wisconsin looks like a good test. The Bruins had no answer for SCs run game

          • Wolf’ is reporting your namesake passed away on Wednesday – nothing on the web as of 6:00 pm 25th December 2015 – have a great Christmas 2015 Sam Bam.

          • We can pretty much predict the results of next season based on the assistants that are hired, and the outcome of spring football. Because that’s exactly what I did last season, after Steve Sarkisian hired Bob Connelly, and the team struggled running the ball, and pass protection during spring practice.

          • Helton is very likeable, a proven leader of young men.Strong of character and integrity. One who seemingly loves USC and wants to restore Pride to our program. He also has to show through results that he is a superior head coach.Deserving of the position. Its a must that the staff is filled out with superior DC, OL coaching. That is first step.

          • With the talent we have being good enough to compete for a PAC 12 title, he’s gonna be under the microscope with these hires since the two major weaknesses were the OL & DC. Despite what Helton says publicly he’s got pressure to make two big hires. Personality wise we all like him. But this current team is a win now football team and Helton’s gonna have to do some good coaching early.

  3. Hey you big goofs, Merry Christmas. You make the year fun. Cheers!

    Your pal,

    UCLA Dynasty

  4. Haden is the “gift” that keeps on giving. Haden will not be satisfied with the destruction of the program until he gives Helton no choice but to promote grad assistants to full time positions or has to hire the bottom of the barrel from other schools…think guys like Connelly. For the love of all things holy to SC football would Haden’s liver finally give out already and force his retirement.

  5. A completely BS post by Wolfie. Orgeron was never on USC’s radar. Been there done that. Moved on. Haden and Orgeron bear no animosity towards each other. None, Just a bunch of made up Troll food Wolfie stuff.

  6. This is the 3rd year in a row that quality assistant coaches have turned down the opportunity to coach at USC, which is how Steve Sarkisian ended up with the horrible staff that he had. I’m going to take a wait and see approach, and see who Clay Helton names as his defensive coordinator before I make any negative comments.

    • Helton is going to hire someone who will take the job. It just doesn’t appear USC is as self recruiting like it once was. I hate to see it but Bush, Garrett, Haden, Kiffen, and Sarkesian have tarnished what took many years by many people to build.

      • With the delay in naming a coach, I wouldn’t be surprised. And as usual, USC is doing it a little different then everyone else, which history has proved, leads to not so good results.

  7. If Haden is the thing that is keeping Orgeron from coming back, I have a simple solution….just fire Haden. Who is a more valuable asset….Haden or Orgeron? Let me help you out on this one…..it’s not Haden, so just use the process of elimination.

  8. I’ve always thought major conference universities like USC , should create a position in the athletic department for someone to handle football decisions, and I don’t mean your regular AD associate . Because it would eliminate the hiring of coaching search firms, and it would allow an experienced football man to monitor the program around the clock . Most athletic directors have no idea what to look in hiring sports personal, and end up hiring people for all the wrong reasons. Mike Garrett, and Pat Haden are effective in all area’s of administration, but both are horrible coach evaluators , and it not only cost the schools millions, but it sets programs back 5 to 7 years.

    • Yeah then why not include Mike McGee- he was even worst than Haden or Garrett – he gave us – Tollner and Smith and nothing decent in men’s basketball. Adding another layer of mgmt. means what? Who is your new position accountable to?

I don’t see any need for such a niche i.e. each school usually has 1 – 2 programs that define the school and the other ‘x’ number are subsidized by men’s football or basketball.

      • I don’t agree – look all admit the hit=re of Sarkisian defies logic based on Haden’s own personal record of coaches he okayed for – on him.

Aside from that glaring mess what else?

        • – Firing Kiffin 6 months too late.
          – Firing a cancerous coach like KO about two seasons too late
          – Absolutely no search after KO firing and then hiring flavor of the month Enfield
          – Though Kiffin was an SOB, the manner in which he was fired didn’t help SC in finding a new coach
          – Firing Sark without some kind of “settlement” protecting SC from lawsuit and embarrassment
          – Not vetting Josh Shaw’s “hero” story before calling national media, which in turn created a national scandal
          – Running on the field to argue with refs at Stanford game

  9. Ed Orgeron is not coming back to southern cal unless he if offered the HC job! Just give it two more years and they’ll come crawling to you Ed…then you can take your shot at your 2 years!

    #HeltonasHCMartinasOCSirmonasDC=Jokestaff7-5herewego

    • Maybe – maybe not – one thing is for sure – save for Harrick in 1995 it’s been 41 years since Wooden won that 9th one..man talk about irrelevancy I mean what happens if Enfield cleans your clock next month and in March? Then what? Girls softball?….better you and yours worry about what Mora plans next a year hence….tick tick tick tick

      • THANKS for your insightful post….IF…is the key word…with you torgans its always if, or coulda, or woulda or shoulda….If SHAW wouldn’t have lied….If Wheeler hadn’t done what he did….If Haden had a clue…..If Gruden had been hired….If Sarks had been VETTED…etc… on and on…Here’s one for you..coming in the future…….IF ORNSTEIN hadn’t of been caught we wouldn’t have gotten the death penalty….

        • 40 years and the one time you won it Harrick got sacked…..40 years man that is a whole generation and a half….

Look clown USC would never and does not allow such to happen in football but good ole’ bel-air tech still hasn’t a clue re. basketball….

          • Point of Clarification!
Jim Herrick was nothing but another incompetent pretty face.He was the last of the three stooges…Larry Farmer, Walt Hazzard, and Mr. “Ball Buster” himself. The major coaching F-ups of the ucla basketball program…at least Walt (’64) and Larry (’73) were fantastic ballers as players.
Anyone in the time frame of the ’95 bruins was aware that but for Ed O’Bannon & Tyus Edney’s ability to ‘will’ the team to victory was the only reason they got into the big dance…let alone win it. So actually, the last NC should be credited to the player’s actual coach Ed O…as opposed to ‘Jim the joke’, who got one more year before being dumped for a variety of reasons other than the players being basically non-responsive to him.

    • He says he wants a Top 5 HC position. News Flash: That will NEVER happen……NEVER.

Coach O is a great ASSistant coach. Nothing more.

  10. Oluwole Betiku …….Thankful to God, Family and football ,I will be a Trojan fighting on to greatness at USC #FightOn ️
