Some Post-San Diego Thoughts

How do USC’s playmakers (JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ronald Jones) get a combined 12 touches? How does the same guy sack the QB three straight times untouched?

  1. USC’s an elite program in name only now. We haven’t been an elite team in a decade. We’re the team with playmakers who don’t make plays in the clutch. Cravens was right on and he also fits the mold of the good USC player who isn’t great – except for Leonard. That’s just the way it is under Haden.

Hopefully, there won’t be any more promotions from within, but with the way USC works nowadays, it’s hard to be overly optimistic with our group of underachievers at all levels – player, coach and management. Suck it up Trojans. We haven’t earned anything better.

I doubt nice-guy-but-nothing-special Helton can make it work but am still hopeful he can bring in a great class along with an OL coach and DC to match.

  2. We act like we expected better last night. Think about it oregon loss, ucla win who loses to a sub .500 Nebraska team, Loss to Stanford who is physical like Wisconsin . So was it the UCLA game that made things optimistic?

      • Be honest. Helton’s teams against Stanford and Wisky have looked horrible. It’s not all the players’ fault either. They’re still under-coached. They still play dumb and poor CK looks like Cool Hand Luke with ankle chains running away from DLs and LBs.

In fact, I would say that the first half against Wisky was the worst I may have ever seen the Trojans play since I started watching them in 1962, and we could only start at the second Q, but I guess the first Q was just as bad. I almost turned off the game, for the first time in my life. Two of my friends actually did stop watching. One started reading a book he was into. The other went to a movie with his wife.

Helton’s a big boy. He’s gonna have to take his licks. He wanted the job and for reasons unknown, Haden gave him a 5-year contract, like he was Urban Meyer or something.

But the truth is, Helton stinks so far. And no, my expectations aren’t so high for the Trojans anymore either. I know they’re not that good so I don’t expect much. I just wish they wouldn’t look totally feeble and continue to make dumb mistakes and no big plays when really needed.

I’m chill. Even laughing at how USC looks sometimes. But USC’s bad and I think Helton’s offense is ridiculous. If that’s all he can come up with, then Haden should quit for God’s sake. Because we’re stuck with Helton and right now it looks like Haden dialed up another snake eyes.

        • I turned it off after WI went ahead @ 10 – 0 and uploaded OC Register (too scared to look at the Times) and wasn’t surprised but saddened.

Give it time – let’s see who is recruited – Prendergast is due back according to the Times this a.m..

          • Pendergast not coming back. The tough part for any coordinator coming to USC is the uncertainty of the coach long term situation and current AD longevity plus the urgency to win which is difficult with our current off and def line situations in recruiting. Sark always emphasized skilled postions over trenches even at Uw that is why he could only get to 7 or 8 wins.

        • I stopped watching after the first set of downs at the start of the third quarter. I knew they were done. I have watched USC football since 1966. It is coaching, but is also the kids. No real hunger, desire. Sad but true. Totally different attitude than 40 years ago. Goodness gracious, this country has elected Obama twice. It is a new world. Happy new year.

          • Same to you – have a great 2016!

It’s amazing to watch USC nowadays. Kids are definitely different than when I grew up and I think superior coaching is hard to find but more important than ever before.

I have never cared whether the players like the coach. I guess the Trojans love Helton but that doesn’t mean diddly to me. USC is strangely “soft” nowadays. I’m sure the kids are all tough. They just play like they have no edge, no inner cohesiveness or belief. USC football reminds me of some entitled kid who will inherit his dad’s company but let it slide into mediocrity.

It’s fun watching MICH ST and ALA. They’re on such a different level. We used to be like that 10 years ago. Someday we’ll be there again…someday.

          • Entitled is the exact word. They think that they have the uniform on they don’t have to go balls out. It is supposed to happen because they are USC. Sorry. Life ain’t like that. As John Hussman used to say ” you have to earn it.”

        • Agreed . The run philosophy by Helton is great if you have a superior line which we dont against the better teams.

        • Look Helton was probably at best the fourth or fifth best choice . Unfortunately no one wants to come to work for an AD whos longevity as his boss is so uncertain. As good as this program could be it is a cancer at this moment always looking back to the Pete Caroll days.

  3. If Juju makes that catch or Cody doesn’t throw that pick, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. The point being is that Helton put his team in a position to win, with both the offensive and defensive game plans, which was not the case with every Sark loss and Post-Sark Wilcox debacles (Stanford, Oregon, ND). With an elite DC and good remaining assist coach hires, Helton will be good.

    • Seriously , we had like 67 yards rushing on 28 carries . And we kept running way too long. We have lost 3 of our last 4 games and beat a mediocre UCLA team. Helton now 5-4. Probably will lose to Alabama , so why his he such a good coach at this point? Only decent win has proven to be utah on how season panned out.all the pac12 coaches say USC has the best talent! So now putting us in a position to win is good enough?

      • guess you didn’t know that what the head coach is supposed to do, seriously you are so superficial and have no clue

        • Seriously , so a team loses 11 games in a seson by 2 pts and the coach put a team in a position to win and does a great job? I would attest that the problem under Helton is our slow starts at the beginning of games . We usually are down too much to overcome the original deficit. So to me that is a problem that hasnt put us in a position to win. Helton got outcoached in his continuing to run when Wisconsin just stuffed it constantly.
To beat Wisconsin you needed to throw over the top. Wisconsin owned time of possession.

          • One benefit from this loss – no allusions going forward – none. Hard work and focus

You know we had a lead in each of the five losses in the 2nd half – just like NE did this past year. Not sure what Helton’s skill is, no one does but here’s to stability and having no allusions about what is needed heading into 2016

    • Wisconsin just copied Stanford playbook against USC. Good physical line play, play tight within 8 yards from scrimmage and let Cody try to beat you with long passes. Control time of possession.

  4. After the 3 back 2 back 2 back sacks i stopped watching. Im glad were done with cody. We need a QB that can run for a first down.

    • Cody ran for 30 yards the wrong direction. But that’s not his fault. USC shouldn’t need a mobile QB because they don’t want to have an o-line.

  5. Hey we lost 3 of our last 4 games. The future is bright? And we could lose our opening game against Bama next year to make it 4 out of the last 5 games. And Kessler and Cravens say we are in good hands, not that either will be here

  6. Neil Callaway to be named O-Line Coach & Tyson Helton named QBs Coach/Passing Game Coordinator…
    Any thoughts?

  7. wolfman, dint you KNOW??? YOU’RE to blame for all these issues!!!

at least, that’s the kind of CRAZY talk some of these trOXans are LASHING out with!!!

DINT you know that by pointing out GLARINGLY obvious holes in the team, you’re making things WORSE, to the point the players and coaches are becoming DEPRESSED!!!! this affects their PLAY, wolfman!! (chortle)

  8. Man Clemson is taking it to OK – surprising I thought those ‘sodbusters’ would be taken it to those swamprats but hey there it is with a full quarter to go.

    • Turn out the lights…..the party’s over.

Man what a a__ whuppin’ OK is gettin’ from Clemson!

Bob Stoops again blows it on the big stage.

      • ‘Maybe’ but I’m willing to state OK not playing a 13th game (CG) for their conference was a big factor which is why the fraud aka ‘The Princess’ wopuld have been taken down just as USC was by Stanford and idnetically as telliing as Stanfrod took USC down the 2nd time.

‘The Princess’ always a pass and free plays for ‘The Princess’ – ‘blank’ notre dame – 27 years and counting …. the rigged deck that always always gets its’ way

  9. It will happen when your so called genius hire HC is an idiot and your so called “star players” are all mouth and no heart! As for the three straight sacks, the OL are all well over 3 bills and can’t move and your running backs resemble matadors, what do you expect?

      • Best comment yet. That is why we should have hired Petersen. His belief is it is a privilege and honor to be able to play College Football and shouldnt be taken for granted. Only a small percentage make it to pros and its about molding young men for the future .

  10. Hopefully we find a miracle worked for next DC because next years schedule could lead to 6 more losses.

  11. Juju will be remembered for his last touch – a dropped ball that would have essentially won the game for us. Great kid – hard worker. But let’s not complain about touches in a team game.

    • Great Kid???!!! Big mouth, choke artist and hated by his teammates! Juju is a cancer to southern cal football! Let him and A. Jackson move on to track…befitting of their “me” centric personalities!

  12. Ronald Jones had a great freshman season – but he was never asked to block in high school, so he still has a lot to learn about playing his position fully before the Alabama game. Can’t block? Can’t play. He’ll get there, I’m sure of it. And Juju will come back strong from his disappointing finish in the Holiday Bowl. Onward to ’16!

  13. Watching Alabamas offensive and defensive lines we have our hands full for the first game next year.

  14. We lost this years California Gattorade Player of theYear to Uw as well as this Years Arizona Player of the year to UW as well as a great off lineman Luke Wattenberg to Uw.
