Clancy Pendergast Semi-Update

I’m hearing Clay Helton and Clancy Pendergast are speaking today as the slow march toward hiring a defensive coordinator continues.

  1. Semi-Update?… It seems more like Scott lifting his hind leg to mark his territory….

  2. No Sources? Maybe Pendergast will actually accept and Wolf will be right for sure this time.

    • …and what would it mean, Sam, if Pendergast said no? Let’s continue with this train of thought —and what if we’re left scrambling for a DC because Helton didn’t get the VERY available (as in who else wants him?) Pendergast ASAP? I sure hope this IS wrapped up today.

      • People are talking. We’re all talking. If Helton strikes out with Pendergast he/we are in serious trouble this late trying to find someone who can actually coach. Yep. He better wrap it up today. If he thinks there will plenty of DCs to choose from by January 15 (his deadline) then he must be as drunk as Sark.

        • It’ll never happen, but could imagine the “splash” it would make if USC were to hire Rob Ryan as our DC?….that would be insane

          • USC commit, WR Michael Pittman, broke his collarbone in the Army All-American Bowl practice earlier today…. bummer….

          • I seen that. That sucks. But Greg Biggins says he could be starting next season. Those are some big words.

          • I don’t think Helton has plan B’s etc. and it’s pretty sad that USC has to worry about getting turned down.

          • Maybe its the pressure of USC. But does Alabama have any problems bringing in top notch coaches? Or Ohio St., Texas, LSU, Florida, Michigan, etc.? Or is it their AD doesn’t care to do a adequate job worthy of a top-5 program to bring in the headcoach who can bring in a top staff? I think it’s the AD! If not, then tell me who’s fault it is?

          • I didn’t go to SC, don’t have any inside info from anyone that knows Haden, but the root of this comes from him. He’s been able to make one mistake after another. But Helton seems to be moving along like a woman in the bathroom putting on makeup. I like Helton’s personality and emotion, but so far as the Head Coach I can only scratch my head from judging his first month or so as the permanent Head Coach.

          • Who’s fault what is? Do you know the guys brought in are sub-par coaches? Because Helton hasn’t met your arbitrary deadline for filling the DC spot it’s already a poor choice? If he had filled them all 2 weeks ago you’d say he should waited until after the NFL season was over. Some people just complain no matter what.

        • I think we can do much better, but it’s an improvement. Plus I wouldn’t let him coach the DBs too – hire a DB coach and let the DC focus on the overall strategy. And I would hire BKU for the DL position.

    • Lots of conflicting info. Bottom line is nobody knows nothing and Pendergast and Walker continue to be the names that come up but nobody has managed to get any solid info. Speculation city.

      • I thought Scottie has “Inside USC” sources? Or is it like that Monty Python skit on “One Hour Dry Cleaning” that it’s just a name and they don’t actually return your dry cleaning within one hour?

      • I am starting to believe Wolf knows a lot more than he is able to say and is establishing his credibility to keep quiet, so he is misleading us.

  3. If they get him that’s great but I’d like to see them bring in someone who acts like he actually wants to come to SC. He seems to be looking for every excuse to not come. His main motivation for coming seems to be that he may need a job.

    • USC is officially into begging mediocre coaches (who really prefer the NFL) to come coach the Trojans under Helton. It hasn’t been a good beginning for Clay, let’s face it. If he gets the totally available Pendergast, he’ll be trumpeting it as some huge success. Whoopee. This is how you put together the best staff in America.

      • Ask Thai Mex. I don’t know. But WOLE’s gonna leave cleat marks all over UCLA’s Left Tackle next year!

      • Just saying, but 5-Star Juco DE Jonathan Kongbo decommited from Tennessee a day after USC offered him a scholarship.

        • Cant wait to see how it unfolds – what does your gut tell you is the final recruiting class ranking? Seems like we need more OLmen too, aside from DEs and Safeties

          • I think the only OL we’re targeting at the moment is EJ Price from Georgia. He’s been the only OLineman we’ve been after for a while now and we’re in his top 3. But I’m gonna predict a top 4-5 finish. It’s crazy that with all the Sark drama, coaches being let go, and still missing a DC and the whole defensive staff we are set up to land a really good group of players down the stretch. Besides Juarez and Jordan Elliott dropping us we’ve handled all the craziness well. Jan 15 is probably our biggest weekend to date, I can’t remember everyone’s name that will be visiting, but it will be crowded with kids. Best player in the country Rashan Gary and his mother will be visiting. We’re looking to go hard in the last month.

          • Thanks bud, you are a true Trojan and look forward to hearing your updates with recruits – this is one of the most fun parts of the year IMO – it’s that big question, who is in???

          • It’s always fun for me. My pal is always texting me what’s going on. Its fun following our players from the beginning of the season to them pulling out hats on signing day. We shall see…

          • Everson Griffin was a guy out of Arizona that was considered a “freak” at high school scouting combines and considered a huge get, and wow he is doing great in the league now!

          • I’m glad he got it going. He was quiet his first two years. But he’s been consistent ever since. Didn’t he get into it with Matt Kalil?

          • Kalil obviously has been awesome as well, I wasnt aware he had issue with Everson – but it sure is fun to see players go from HS as a recruit to the pros – you think Betiku can be as good as EGriffin?

        • Are you certain that it was the next day? He is exactly what USC needs, DL men.
I will say as many at the USC Scout blog say, KABOOM if he becomes a Trojan.

  4. Pendergast would be okay, but USC needs better than okay coaches. San Francisco wasn’t the center of the NFL defensive universe, so I fail to see the lure here.

  5. Well it looks like you need to already know the head coach as a eelative or have been at USC to get the job.
