Timing Is Everything

Every year the recruit who waits until Signing Day always gets the most attention. For example, Concord De La Salle’s Devin Asiasi and Boss Tagaloa are getting mentioned a lot by USC and UCLA fans because they are waiting until tomorrow.

If they had committed back in August, who would be mentioning them today? Imagine the uproar if Tyler Vaughns or Michael Pittman waited until Signing Day? But if you wait, your commitment always gets magnified.

  1. First ,did anybody not know this?
Then in Pittman’s case,he enrolled early.
(it’s like being on double secret probation)
Now the stories I’d like to hear more about
are how recruits commit in secret ,and use
media attention publicly on signing day.
( who do we have secretly committed by today)
    Jones,……then who else?
For many of these recruits it’s their only
time to get this much attention.

    • Exactly – lots of folk around here, including semi-legitimate sports writers, still don’t get it – see Iman Marshall as an example of a “secret commitment” – everybody is doing the same thing, thus the 6 open spaces to leave the uninformed head’s spinning (you know who they are)

  2. Maybe it is just me but I think USC will be fine. With the talent recruited last year plus the kids we’ll get this year we are going to be able to compete with any team in the Pac-12. A lot depends on how the coaching does with the players we have and we get.

  3. I’d rather recruit a player who commits when he’s ready and gets attention from his action on the field, than a prima donna who feels the need to wait to the last day just to get attention.

    • As usual, Helen has her finger on the pulse of the 2015 teenager.

For me, Helen is the poster child for USC’s dramatic improvement as a university. If she were a teenager today, she could not hope to get admitted. Hear me now, and believe me later.

  4. For once I agree with El Lobo. USC already has 6 quality recruits enrolled. These final couple guys are being talked about like their game changers and that is not the case.

  5. I like the kids that commit anytime and STICK WITH IT. Shows the integrity they have been taught by their family. The prima donas on signing day tend to turn me off in their display of ego.

  6. Browne back to pass…Sacked! Pete Arbogast is going to say this a lot come this fall! southern cal and it’s 19 WRs can’t catch balls that are never thrown to them!

  7. I thought that verbal commitments don’t mean anything? If that’s the case, why should they rush to announce a potential meaningless commitment? And now the recruits who wait until signing day are being accused of milking their moment of fame? Ugh.
