USC Morning Buzz: A Familiar Pattern For Recruiting

Clay Helton’s first recruiting class resembled a lot of games he coaches this season: USC fell behind early and then was forced to catch up. Lucky for Helton, Signing Day did not finish like the Stanford games.

Here’s my story on Signing Day, with comments by Helton. And here are my five impact players for next season, including Jack Jones (above).

  1. Scott White UCLA LB/SP coach awarded Conf. recruiter of the year.. .on a side note Hunter Echols just committed to the Bruins!

    • No side notes here. Just upfront facts. USC had the best recruiting class from the pac12 in three of the four services. Oh wait there’s more. The service that had us ranked lower (Scout) has USC with the highest average star per player. That’s in the nation. Last year we had the #1 class in the nation and tapped the Bruins a**. What happened? Remember what you said a few weeks ago? Who would have the better class?
      AGAIN…SC HAD THE BEST CLASS.

      Tell all your friends!

    • Per CBS sports earlier today, Tee Martin is the 247 National Recruiter of the Year. FIGHT ON! ✌

  2. Just as a sort of reminder— in our first game against Stanford last season, we got way ahead and lost it late. And Helton wasn’t the head coach.

    • When will he ever admit that he was flat out wrong??? He said SC was having a “hard time giving out scholorships” – so that explains the highest average star rating in the country??? Obviously, and sadly, he has NO CLUE!!!

      • But he is dead on right about these continual yes continual high ranking USC recruiting classes not playing in championships or even the better bowl games. It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer does it…

  3. This recruiting class didn’t resemble the game Clay coached against UCLA. In that one USC led from the outset and got stronger and stronger as the game went on.

  4. woIfman, i’d like to take this opportunity to COMMEND you for the fantastic job you did yesterday with the Live Chat….it was simply the most incredible display of stamina and acuity i have ever witnessed, perhaps matched only by Hillary’s triumphant Congressional Benghazi Hearing performance!!!

and SHE dint have to deal with a veritable schoolyard of immature trOXans!!

    #WhatDifferenceDoesItMake??

  5. Considering the drama USC went through,(some self inflicted), we did really well I’m very happy we got some great players and I think Josh Fatu is going to be a major contributor he was a great find!!. UCLA did very well also, I think they did better then what they expected, and that’s why the Troll’s are so giddy!, This will help the PAC 12 as a whole to be more competitive, Becouse everyone knows where the SEC stands with ESPN

  6. 2-issues concerning Scott’s article: #1 he says USC recruits USC and we hear this all the time. However, if USC football continues having 8 & 5 seasons, how long will USC successfully recruit USC in bringing in better talent who want to play for championships? Kids will see 8 & 5 records ongoing and it ain’t gonna cut it. #2 Scott is right about USC consistently recruiting better classes each year but the results show other programs with lesser talent, playing in better bowl games. It all begins with the AD. And that is where USC is underachieving. The problem is, the president & trustees don’t give a crap obviously or Haden would have been long gone by now.
