Warning To Wisconsin

Here’s a podcast I did with the Wisconsin State Journal on former USC defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, who recently became the Badgers defensive coordinator. In fairness, I say during the podcast I think Wilcox might be more successful with Wisconsin, where Big Ten offenses might not be so spread-oriented. Listen here

  1. They (WI) lost their previous DC to LSU and they hired Wicox whose previous team they (WI) beat….that makes sense? Look WI doesn’t have a lot of money or they would have kept the guy they lost. Wilcox is lucky to have a job in any top tier program. He is and was a lousy defensive coordinator -Good luck WI next year against MN. NE and the Big-10 East – you’ll need it – Wilcox is not a good DC.

  2. From what I heard is that Wilcox could be decent if he has a strong head coach and if he has strong position coaches. It sounds like he might have that at Wisc.

    • Gary Andersen left for OR St. – Chryst beat USC and hires their DC? Good luck with that game plan.

  3. Just weird. If Wilcox somehow succeeds at Wisky, that will be even stranger. Good luck to him. He took a merciless beating at USC both on and off the field. For him to get as far away as possible was probably smart, though I thought Wilcox lacked brains at USC.

    • He really made himself look bad when he answered questions about defensive assignments gone wrong with “I don’t know”.

      • Old Skinny Jeans never sounded nor looked good in his interviews. He always seemed very canned and on the verge of being bothered. Just a bad, bad fit. And he was supposed to be so good. People started to refer to him as Sark’s drinking buddy. That may not have been far off the mark. How the two ever landed at USC just shows you how sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good – until the shoe drops.

    • I don’t wish him anything save good bye – he stunk and was a reminder of why Sarkisian was an incompetent, lousy and lazy HC for hiring him in the first place.

WI has no money to retain quality staff i.e. they hired Wilcox – Lord help them.

    • Its obvious to me that Wilcox helped Wiscansan behind the scenes to formulate a victory against SC – and then he got the job

  4. It’s not thanksgiving, but I’m thankful that Wilcox, Chris Wilson and Bob Connelly are not on this staff anymore. I strongly feel that Pendergast and BKU will coach up our defense a lot better than their predecessors. And I think Neil Callaway’s experience will transform our OLine from lazy/undisciplined to tough, disciplined, and bully-ish. Helton wasn’t anyone’s first choice, but I think he put together a good staff.

  5. Quick recruiting news I just seen. I just seen on 247Sports that 2017 5Star Offensive Tackle Austin Jackson from Phoenix, Arizona, 2017 5Star WR Joseph Lewis of Los Angeles Hawkins High School, 2017 4Star QB Tua Tagovailoa of Hawaii, and 2017 5Star WR Tyjon Lindsey of Corona Centennial (just transferred from Bishop Foreman have all received brand new Crystal Ball predictions for USC all within the last two days. Wow! I know we still have 12 months until Signing Day 2017, but damn this is some promising news. Austin Jackson is considered the best OT in the nation, and after he attended the USC Rising Stars Camp he’s been rumored as an SC lean. And what can you say about Tee Martin, that dude is putting in WORK! Again these are early predictions based on their current recruitments, but this all good news!

        • Oh I forgot to mention Haskell Garrett
From Bishop Goreman. A Scout 5STAR who was also Crystal balled to USC. Earlier in the season when he was offered by Sark he immediately said we were his leaders. It seems that nothing’s changed since then and we remain on top for him. He’s a big DT.

          • Nice – DTs appear to be in great need at this time – I just watched “Woodlawn” for the first time, amazing to see how the culture of football has such a huge effect on American society, and how much USC has done in that regard in Birmingham AL by pounding the tide late in the ’70s game with the help of Sam Bam – God Bless SC – hope the team can pull themseves together for an upset this time around, I plan to be there – I like the way Heltons Kentucky team played against LSU

          • I think SC’s best shot at beating Alabama is in the opening game of the season. We’ll both have new QB’s on the field, only Max Browne’s been in our system for 4 years now. I like that dynamic. They lose Heisman winner Derrick Henry. They lose 8 defensive starters including a 1st round draft pick. Alabama doesn’t do well defending the pass. They have a great pass rush, but they haven’t had the type of secondaries that Saban used to. If SC tries to come out and run the ball we won’t win that game. That defensive front are run stoppers. You have to come out throwing on them. That’s when Saban starts to lose it when his secondary is getting beat. In that particular game I say pass first and then mix in the run. But you can’t give their DLine the chances to gain confidence by making defensive stops by run stuffing. They have Amari Cooper, but he’s no JUJU SMITH. Offensively we have more play makers. I think Max Browne will be ready for this opportunity. I really think Callaway will have an effect on our OLines preparation in spring and fall camp that will have them ready to go. Clancy knows defense and will be zeroing in on this matchup. In game 1 of the football season I like our chances. If this game was played any other time I would be a little more nervous. I don’t know how our season will play out, but I think we will win this game.

PS. If you are going to the game there a couple of threads on the WEARESC and FightOn247 message boards about fans going and what they need to know about the area, hotels, tailgating, etc.

      • Dequan Hampton, Isaac Whitney and Darreus Rodgers are seniors, and JUJU is most likely headed to the NFL. Steven Mitchell could also leave early. There’s gonna be some turnover with the WR’s after this season, and even with the 5 freshmen we’ll need at least two. There’s always transfers, or bumps in the road. One thing is certain Tee Martin can fish and reel in the talent.

    • Sam Bam “Cunningham”, You are totally, absolutely and “completely” CORRECT !

      GREAT NEWS !!!

      Now everyone, FightOn

    • Tee (Now “400” Yard Drive) Martin is as good as Gold [Cardinal n’ Gold] !!!

Triple Tee will go down as a Trojan Legend !

      Thank God for TMartin…

  6. A very interesting conversation. As I listened 2 thoughts came to mind. 1) why don’t we get the same level of analysis , context and perspective on this blog or in SW’s articles? 2) When talking about how Wilcox was so unpopular SW truly minimized his role in stirring up the fans & fanning the fire he helped start. Final point–I agree that Wilcox was not successful and had to go. As much for his coaching failings as for the toxicity his presence generated.

  7. Warning to Wisconsin: Be careful of the rabid southern cal trolls that are sure to inundate Wisconsin football sites with obsessive post about Wilcox.

DO NOT FEED THE SOUTHERN CAL RAH RAHS!!

    • I wish that someone had warned US to be careful of the rabid UCLA trolls that were sure to inundate USC football sites with obsessive posts about about how insecure they are about their sports teams, hence revealing their obvious inferiority complex…..

      • They got their a-$-$ handed to them in football, and were embarrassed at Pauley then at the Galen Center in basketball, but they still believe they own Los Angeles. Those poor poor little men.

      • Speaking of trolls, I heard your pal Helen moderated the recent Democrat primary debate and hugged Hillary afterwards.

    • So the guy who has posted here under more than a dozen different names is warning people about obsessive trolls.
      Now I’ve seen it all.

  8. Wilcox stunk, he’ll continue to stink and the blog writer, who seems to obsess over former USC coaches, will continue to write about him

  9. Despite losing (A game we should have won!) to Wisconsin in the Holiday Bowl, I can’t help feeling sorry for the Badgers !

Their Defense has been good over the years ?

A division ll team I could understand, but a Top Big 10 team ???

Clay Helton, I could not think of a way to thank You more for finding a way to bring Clancy (Killa Clancy) Pendergast “back” to USC !

    Seriously !!!

It provides “hope” towards next season and beyond, something that was severely lacking since Clancy left !!!!

    Seriously x 2 !
