The Athletic Director Chronicles

It is odd to me how many USC fans/employees never give Mike Garrett and Pat Haden a similar review. They always take one over the other. I will say this: Garrett certainly provided the better stories. When the basketball job opened in 1996, Purdue’s winningest coach Gene Keady called to express interest. Garrett’s response? “Who’s he?”

And then when Rick Majerus suddenly resigned after a few days at USC in 2005, Garrett informed his superiors he was going to hire, “Jim Floyd,” instead of Tim Floyd. Here are some other classic name gaffes from Mike McGee, Bernard Parks and Lane Kiffin.

  1. It is a real shame everyone isn’t as talented as the blogger. That is why he works for a third rate newspaper used to line cat boxes. The blogger is talking about odd? that is the pot calling the kettle black…

      • Some people actually have the capacity to learn from their mistakes… others?… the link will NEVER work….

        • Yes your sock puppet was mercifully retired after that failure to launch. Back to the drawing board!

          • I have no idea what it is you’re trying to say…..insults are usually more effective when conveyed in a comprehensible manner

          • You don’t seem to remember that another poster wrote “bafoon”, yet you just took credit for it. Thanks for outting yourself.

          • Wow…. you apparently know how to use spell check, but decoding a weblink is well beyond your intellect…. not all surprising…..

          • No I tease you about that because sometimes you post it so we can click on it directly there, and sometimes you don’t.

          • My ability, or inability, to post web links on this blog is seemingly an arbitrary phenomenon, which is equally frustrating for me when I want to share relevant information to fellow readers…. the fact that we have to resort to cryptic means to work around this is lame and childish…..

          • “Yes your sock puppet was mercidully reiterd after that failure to launch.”

What on earth does this mean? I figured that I would copy and paste your post before you correct it, which you are known to do.

          • It would mean there were a couple of typos that were easily corrected. You are so arrogant and stupid that you lecture others about their spelling while leaving your misspellings up permanently.

          • WRONG!!!!!!…….as usual….. your ego is so fragile that you feel the need to correct your typos (within the 10 second grace period, of course LOL), for fear of being ridiculed and mocked……The only person that I bother to correct (not “lecture”) is the individual who is getting paid to post on this troll infested blog… is that really too much to ask?……it’s quite amusing, and revealing, that you are very tolerant of SW and his numerous foibles….

          • It is funny that SW never corrects his typos but I appreciate his blog and the info on USC he shares. Just look at Wang’s pathetic wasteland of a blog- he hasn’t written a thing since SC thumped the ruins last Thursday.

          • Yes he blundered and admitted it right here this afternoon! I couldn’t believe he was so stupid.

          • HAHAHAHA!!!!!!…. Caught ya!…. you corrected your post, but not before I captured it!….. What a doofus…. was THAT spelled correctly?

          • Sorry “Item” but everyone is allowed to correct their posts in the first ten seconds after posting. What makes your hypocrisy so delicious is that you lecture SW about spelling mistakes and then you leave yours up, completely unaware.

          • Is this “10 second” rule, to which you refer, listed somewhere in the “comment policy” of this blog?……. I didn’t think so……delicious?… Bon appetit, bozo……SW’s countless mistakes leave us all indigestion, except for those who settle for mediocrity, such as yourself….

          • Thanks for clearing up the Inside USC blog comments section rules for all of us.

          • I will give credit where credit is due…..You are, hands down, the biggest master baiter on this blog…

          • Stop stealing my stuff!
You just plagiarized one of my favorite lines.
Additionally, never wrestle a pig in the mud……etc..etc.. (not my basic verbiage, but it still has applicability when dealing with those whom one has little or no respect).

          • As I mentioned in one of my posts earlier today, I am the Milton Berle of this blog…. nothing that I post is original! … LOL

          • Rah Rah, you have been a baaaad boy!
Some rum-nuts obviously squealed on Uncle Milkey for doing nothing more than making this den of poop-throwing somewhat tolerable. At least you were awarded a somewhat tawdry badge of courage via a ‘this comment was deleted’ tag.
Me, I don’t even get that…just a sneaky hold for inspection, and then, the ominous red ‘removed’ sign…to be observed as “eyes only”. Not good for my image. As a further aside, I recently used the English equivalent of loboie and the post went the way of all flesh. Change that one word to ‘blogger’, repost, and it flys like a butterfly while stinging like a bee.
I know, this has been SOP with Helen (Wheels) and Sam for a while, but unfortunately I am not as quick-witted as they. In any event…food for thought regarding future endeavors when making innocuous posts that are scrubbed fastern’ a nanosecond.

          • Excellent input, Lawrence!….. I shall heed your words of wisdom, as I, too, have been victimized by the bright red ‘removed’ sign on numerous occasions…. not good for my self-esteem…. not good at all….

  2. I’d take MG every time because there would be no doubt in my mind he wanted USC football to win as badly as I do. He also would have fought the NCAA over their sanctions if he had been allowed to stay.

    • MG would have fought and lost to the NCAA. People don’t understand that the NCAA is judge, jury and executioner and rational arguments won’t work.

      • But somehow Rick Neuheisel defeated the NCAA all by his lonesome thanks to that USC law degree.

    • So that would mean the bRuins have a cupcake? Going to be some fun with that over the summer.

    • So you think we won’t see any posts by the Blogger on how easy the USC schedule is and how Helton is running away from competition?

        • Sam, come on… he posts what he does to get “a reaction”, especially if he has inside info and pushes our button a certain way. It wasn’t like that years back. But then years back we were not so abusive at him. Now he is playing with us.

  3. It happens… I once thought the UCLA and southen cal bball coachs’ names were Alfield and Enford. Then some commenters set me straight, it’s Alfred and Enfeld.

    • All of you are FOS! The ucla and USC bball coaches are respectively…Subbs and Havage.
If you are unable to get it right, make like Marie Antoinette, and head off…or make like Traveler caca, and hit the trail.

  4. I’d be shocked if they didn’t name Lopes, McKay or one of the former trojans. They never seem to go outside of the system. They should.

      • Someone who comes out and states ‘we are going after the ncaa; and the best coaches and athletes…not, I am the fund raiser ,and king of political correctness…ATHLETIC DIRECTOR…not facilities director/moving furniture specialist.

  5. A TALE OF TWO CITIES…
    – Pat Haden was a Rhodes Scholar who oversaw the creation of on-campus athletic structures.
-OJ Simpson was a great football player, as was Mike Garrett (AKA Napoleon)…and Reggie.
-Kevin O, former SC basketball coach has an attractive wife.
-Henry Bibby was a prolific shooter on the ucla basketball team.
-Paul (Can’t) Hackett was instrumental in the recruitment of Troy Polamalu.
-The blogger was the inspiration in the creation of the then, top-10 song, “How much is that blogger in the window?”
-Hillary was the wife of a former US president.
-Adolph Hitler had some great clips on Utube re: USC football.

    …THEN THE OTHER SHOE(S) DROPPED!
