This is the current posting from the search firm Brill Neumann for the USC athletic director’s job: “Position description forthcoming.” Perhaps when the actual job requirements are posted, it can list some qualifications like maybe actually being an athletic director somewhere.
I for one think Dave Wannstedt would be an amazing Athletic Director. His coaching prowess, understanding of the Pac 12, and devilish good looks would steer USC back onto the path of greatness. Honorable greatness without the scandals and cheating of the past.
Fred,
How do you feel about USC’s lack of diversity in the athletic department? Will it ever change?
Enough about Diversity. Lets hire the best man for the job and that’s me. The Pac 12 network has taught me so many things about the Pac 12. I’m ready!
It will never change. You would think it wouldn’t be too tough to at least interview a black man.
Gee, we had a black man for 19 years. And a great one at that. Garrett also had Gross and Martin. Gross had the gig at Syracuse and Martin is sinking the Northridge program. Could the lack of diversity be because of a certain person’s golf club? Just askin’
Only black Heisman winners need apply.

I agree 100%
Why don’t you write it, Mr. Blogger?
I am surprised the post does not say “Seeking White Athletic Director”! The lack of diversity is sickening!!!
Although I do agree with you. I would love this Job. I need the work and the money.
I mentioned this earlier on an older post so many people may not have seen it—great column by Jon Wilner of the Mercury News regarding the AD job.
We know. How many times do you have to repeat yourself?
This guy is like a broken record.
Or a blogger
Fred, it’s the Daily News!
The job requirements will certainly include kissing up to the USC President and bending over for the NCAA.
Something tells me that the sports agents who represent potential USC A.D.s do not rely on publicly posted job descriptions in their decisions. There are probably only a few of such agents in the entire U.S., and Brill Neumann would have called each of them (or have been called by each of them) to exchange niceties and ideas.
Scott pointed out that Brill Neumann was not experienced in athletic department placements.
I just went to their website. USC has worked with them half-a-dozen times for non-athletic searches. Their client list includes quite a few prominent universities.
But I saw ZERO placements in athletics. For ANY university. ZERO!
It makes me curious how Nikias made this search-firm hire?
Which are the better regarded search firms in athletic executive hiring, pro or college?
Was it USC’s by-now familiar “I know them, so I’ll hire them”?
Or was there some compelling logic that isn’t apparent on the surface?
Or was it a “mis-direction” press release? I.e., Nikias won’t need help, because he’s only looking on campus?
Did USC really offer Jurich, and if so, was that Brill Neumann’s idea? Jurich (1) was early to identify several successful head coaches, and (2) managed to bring ex-CBB-superstar Petino to Louisville, and (3) sustained relationships with his coaches, even under challenging circumstances. If it was Brill Neumann that suggested Jurich, that’s more of plus than a minus for Brill Neumann–in my book. Not passing final judgment whether Jurich should be hired. However, Jurich IS a player who has already demonstrated core competences AS AN A.D. That, in itself, improves on past decisions in some athletic hires at USC.
