A Look At USC Village

Here’s what the old University Village shopping center currently looks like as it is being transformed into USC Village.

    • Other way, East towards Fig. And that’s gone now too, right?

Goodbye The 3-2 Market and Sandwich Island…

      • The 32nd Street Market will be missed, especially by the locals, but man did it smell in the early 80’s, when I went to school there….

        • It certainly was no Ralph’s when I was there. But they did always carry legit 40’s.

      • They turned the 9-0 into the 901 Bar and Grill. I hear its supposed to be classy – at least compared to what it once was. Which could just mean you don’t feel like you’re walking on a floor covered will sticky beer and gum.

        • And vomit. But she got the job done.

I knew it changed, but I thought I read somewhere that whole block was sold for development. Does that include Chano’s too? I’m not sure. I could be wrong.

          • Chain’s has a new name but I don’t see any improvements to the structure. Same menu painted on the walls.

        • skip and go nakeds they were called. 1/3 gin, 1/3 beer, 1/3 sweet and sour. Squats would have been in pure bliss!

      • The old 901 was on Jefferson right across from campus. Now a park/walkway. Progress sucks.

        • Got it. I was unaware of the original location.

On another topic: Is the 2-9 still up? Haven’t been in all of these general areas for years.

  1. There are no balconies on the buildings! How are southern cal football players going to get away from the LAPD errrr save their nephews now???

Getting rid of a supermarket and affordable eateries that serve the hardworking immigrant citizens of the neighborhood is what southern cal is about!

    • You can open up your house and feed these people Bernie…I mean Ted. Put your money where your mouth is Mr. Bleeding heart liberal. One more thing, I don’t think people in the barrio go eateries, D-Bag!

    • No locals ever went to UV. As a student I’d only go to the 32nd Street Market for the occasional beer and/or snack run and only saw other students doing the same.

The rest of the village was a wasteland outside of the Denny’s. I think the longest running tenant, outside of the market, was a bike shop that re-sold stolen bikes back to students.

    • Ted, from all accounts I read and from current students the upgrade to the neighborhood is well received. Everyone is waiting for the Trader Joes to open–it could become one of the busiest stores in the entire chain.

    • Ted I guess your brilliant women’s softball season isn’t compelling enough to keep you from commenting on U-Village.

  2. I remember when UV village was brand new back in mid 70’s. Tam’s Bookstore was the hot spot!

  3. impressive camera work woIfman!!!

the place looks ok i guess, only TWO more things to address:

    1) you gueys need a REAL WALL to keep out the Muslims, Blacks and Hispanics!!

    2) we need to do something to address the……odor.
