Jared Goff Back In Coliseum?

The Rams obtained the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft today and will take quarterbacks Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) or Jared Goff (California) with the first pick. Goff could be back in the Coliseum in the August 13 exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Even more ironic is that the Rams will play in a largely unchanged Coliseum since their last game in 1979.

  1. Forget about Goff. The Rams gave up 1,2,3,4,5,6….SIX. Six draft picks to move up to the #1 spot. Wow. I’m scratching my head on this one.

    • If they strike gold with either Wentz or Goff, it’ll go down as the smartest move in Rams history. If it doesn’t work out, they’ll still be a lot better at QB. They must be pretty worried Case Keenam’s abilities.

      • It’s either hit or miss on this move. There’s no in between. Either they get they’re money’s worth and they get a franchise QB or they get nothing because they gave up 6 rounds of football players to build on.

        • So I take it you wouldn’t have made the move. Certainly reasonable. But what’s your alternative? Fisher obviously doesn’t like Keenam and L.A. isn’t in line for an NFL retread and the Rams need to make a splash.

What do they do? And L.A.’s less forgiving and more demanding than St. Louis.

          • I get it. It’s LA, make a quick splash, but we’re not talking about Peyton Manning or even an RG3 guys who were considered sure bets. All the NFL draft experts are still questioning whether these two QBs are even worthy of a top 15 pick now you’ve pushed away six building blocks to start your LA days. First off keeping Fisher was a bad move. The Rams are obviously in need of better upper management.

          • So, you would have fired hometown boy Fisher and then what? You’re still stuck with a bad QB and a great RB to open the season. You just gonna sit there in the land of where stars are made and take it on the chin? What if your new coach absolutely doesn’t want Keenam. Nobody wants Kaepernick at his $ demand. You gonna stand pat?

          • So you’re good with the Rams putting all their cards in Keenam’s lap, as long as Fisher’s not the coach. You might find it difficult to fill the coaching spot with somebody good who knows he’s stuck with Keenam.

          • The last team to receive this many picks on the opposite end of a deal like this was the Dallas Cowboys and they won 3 Super Bowls. That’s why I’m a little disturbed by a team giving away six draft picks.
And it could somehow someway end up being a home run, but right now it’s not a smart move in my opinion.

          • Well aware of that. All I’m asking is what would you have done?

They have no pro retread options they like, or obviously they would have gone that route.

They’re stuck with the draft. They’re in a seller’s market. Nothing gonna change that or the price. As I understand you, you would have kept your picks and gone with a third or fourth choice QB and hoped it worked out. Right?

          • I’ll be honest. Going for a QB would be my move, but not at the price of losing so many picks.

          • But that’s the price for the move to #1. It’s pretty set. If you don’t want to pay the price because it’s too steep, then you’re not moving. The Titans just say goodbye.

You could always move to #2 or #3, etc. at a cheaper price, but then you might still lose the guy you’re moving for in the first place. Obviously, the Rams know who they want, they have him evaluated higher than others, and they don’t think they can get him with anything except #1. So they couldn’t get the QB they wanted at a lesser price – or they would have.

          • They taking a big gamble. They want to win now and I respect that, but the Rams questionable history has brought on this feedback from the football world.

          • The Rams obviously think it’s a bigger gamble to try to win with Keenam in L.A. That’s their informed evaluation and not mine. I guess we’ll all find out when Keenam gets a shot somewhere else.

My thinking is, the Rams would have been crucified by the press and its fans for going into the season with Keenam. Everyone knows the NFL is near impossible with a stiff at QB.

          • They’re 1st rounders, but I don’t see their talent commanding the strength to swap for six players.

        • Years ago didn’t the Vikings trade a slew of picks for Herschel Walker and it ended up making the Cowboys a Super Bowl dynasty?

          • Herschel Walker was a Cowboy and the Vikings traded both players (5) and draft picks (8 over several years) for him. The Cowboys used their picks well (including Emmitt Smith). New Orleans (under Mike Ditka) traded their entire 1999 draft (and a couple more in 2000) to Washington to move up from 12th to 5th to draft Ricky Williams. The Redskins didn’t benefit as much as the Cowboys/Vikings trade.

      • Yet everyone says USC should have hired a GM-type to come in and give credibility to the AD spot.

          • That presumes Swanny will be a lot like Haden. Truth is, they could be very different in important ways. I happen to think they will be, based on feedback I’ve received from those who know both better than me.

          • USC should have hired an AD-type to come in and give credibility to the AD spot. For some reason many on this blog think USC is an internship, the place to come to learn how to coach or learn on the job how to become an AD.

  2. Unchanged? I guess we’re supposed to ignore that part where they ripped out the track, dropped the field and filled in the seats. Aside from the couple acres that they tore out, it is really similar. Also, none of that is ironic Alanis.
