USC QB Position Will Go To Fall

USC.QBS.SPRINGAfter some confusing answers last week, Clay Helton officially announced he will continue the quarterback competition into fall training camp.

“There were a number of open positions on our team this spring where players performed very well, including the quarterbacks,” Helton said.  “I met with them today and told them that, based on how well they played, I have decided to continue the quarterback competition into Fall Camp. I will wait until then to name a starter.”

Expect the competition to last the first two weeks of training camp.

        • Dan, Rents is a proud attendee of Cerritos C.C. He did not earn his A.A. degree. He may still be working on that endeavor.

  2. Browne is screwed if he accepts Helton’s waffling. Because if he loses the fall competition Browne is stuck with minimal available 2016 xfer options.

    • Do you think it’s a coincidence that he’s graduating? If I were Max’s father, I’d visit Helton, and just tell him: “You’ve had four years to evaluate my son. Look me in the eye, and guarantee me that he’ll get his shot for the first four games, or we’re outa here. He will get his shot somewhere…you can take that to the bank.”

  3. This may be controversial but I think we should go with Darnel if it’s that close. We need to build to the future. I know this means Max may leave but we need to think of the entire program in general. Otherwise, we may lose out this year in W’s and L’s.

  4. will all DUE respect to Hell-ton, it makes no sense NOT to name Maxie now! the risk of Darnel faltering is real, and then you have a demoralized Maxie coming in to save the day?? plus you really stuck a shiv in Maxie’s back!! lastly you force Maxie into a corner now, if he doesn’t get the job, he’ll want to bolt, but it’ll be too late by fall.

    for Darnel to start he has to be WAY ahead of Maxie to justify the potential negatives…….does the CADRE have to do ALL the thinking around here???

  5. The only one who is confusing is the blogger. Helton is a coach with years experience. The blogger is a soccer fan pretending to understand football.

    • Didn’t Sark have years of experience? Surely “St. Pat” has certified experience?

      • Actually, it is ‘Futbol’ is soccer…which just happens to be the title of one of my published books.
        Hopefully the blogger can differentiate between the two.
        When he starts calling the football field a pitch, goal-line an end line, or side line a touch line…then we are in big trouble.

    • Helton is a decent sort who hasn’t set the world on fire and whose skills remain open to question.

      Some commenters here thought he was more likely to succeed at USC than was Chip Kelly. We refer to them as “analytically disabled”.

      The blogger is a provocateur who at times displays good instincts, but he is lazy. As we know, good instincts without hard work rarely transcend mediocrity.

  6. I would have to favor Darnel if it goes to fall. Too bad for Browne, he hung around and gets beat out. I see Helton thinking about the team.

  7. Helton is just leading Browne… that so not cool. He should name Danald the QB and give Browne a chance to transfer and play! Browne will be so bitter…can’t blame him either!

  9. Coach Helton. by not putting 100% of your support behind the QB with years in the program, Max Browne, you have just crap@ed in your pants. Big mistake. No excuses. The true freshman Darnel is a TRUE FRESHMAN.
