JuJu Smith-Schuster’s Role

JUJU.SPRING.GAMEUSC says it wants to be more balanced this season. But what about against Alabama? It’s easy to say you are going to be more balanced but when the “bullets start flying” as coaches say, will Clay Helton (or the quarterback) resist going to Smith-Schuster repeatedly?

  1. I thought that one of the criticisms/observations of Kessler is that he locked onto one receiver. And I thought that one of the observations from Spring Ball was that both Browne & Darnold went through their progressions well & were spreading the ball around–and both players & coaches complimented the QB’s for that fact.

  2. The one thing that concerns me about Clay Helton is, he never takes advantage of what the other teams give him defensively. Because whenever the Trojans were successful running the ball on opponents, they decided to force the ball to JuJu Smith , and switch to the passing game. And like several television analyst , and former coaches said, ” If you can run the ball, then run the ball , and put the game away”. But instead, Helton, like Steve Sarkisian, would rather be cute, and prove he has a balanced attack .

    • Helton isn’t the only coach with this problem, it seems to be an epidemic among head coaches in college and the pro’s to be cute with the play calling.

    • That’s actually from norm chow, if you heard chow speak when he was at usc he talked about emphasizing being 50/50 run/pass.

    • Yes, I understand that it’s often a good idea to analyze what the defense is set on defending, and then to attack elsewhere.

To say nothing of the corollary oppostie idea of play “series”, a group of plays that start identically, but then develop differently and attack different spots. Intstead of attacking what the D doesn’t prioritize, causing the D to prioritize something, and then attacking elsewhere.

These are not new concepts, and one can see their historical appeal. 🙂

  3. Your QBs should be able to handle it. If anyone knows about “when the bullets start flying,” it’s USC students.

  4. If Davis & Jones III don’t combine for 150+, it will be a long day against Alabama & Stanford.

  5. Juju’s gonna have to play like Juju that’s for sure in order to beat Alabama. Zach Banner’s gonna keep his mouth shut or put his money where his mouth is and play lights out against the Bama DLine. I can go on and on.

    • Better than a sharp stick, however old news as per 247 sports the other day.

    • The #1, 6-4 200lb OLB in American Samoa. Check Falaniko’s game highlights. The competition is sub-small So. Ca H/S FB.

      • I’m ok with that. We’ve seen players from De La Salle, Mater Dei come in and be flops. The competition I’m high school thing is overrated.

    • Hey buddy, wish you and your son a enjoyable season.
I think Juliano will be an impact player after a year of
coaching. His upside huge. Tua may be Second guessing
us,mainly because of Darnold and Corral.I do know for an
Island kid,a jump beyond the west coast out of HS is an enormous
step. Tua going to Alabama and staying be a huge culture change.
You would have gotten a kick here Saturday ,a few of the posters
mixed up an Alaskan RB named Falaniko as the one who committed .
A conversation went on with a number of posters about USC taking
a 3* small school Alaskan RB,basically ignoring who really committed .

      • Thanks man. Tua is all Bama right now. He’s gonna commit there May 2. His parents are even willing to move out there.

  6. If USC is going to beat Alabama, they need to believe they can beat Alabama. They need to avoid playing the game they think they need to play and just go out and play well.
Confidence is key. The winners know they can win. The losers hope they can win. If the new coaching staff knows how to win things will be pretty sweet.
