Morning Buzz: Would Jared Goff Have Started At USC?

The Rams reportedly decided to make Jared Goff the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Maybe Jon Gruden is making their pick.

“I think Jared Goff has everything I’m looking for in the pocket,” Gruden said. “He has great feet. He keeps his feet alive at all times. He takes punishment. He’ll create new launching spots, he’s a very talented pocket passer. I would want him if I were still coaching.”

Goff was the No. 8-ranked pro-style QB in the nation per Rivals in 2013. Max Browne was No. 1. Goff’s already done with his college career while Browne looks like he will make his first start against Alabama.  USC didn’t even offer Goff, who committed to Cal a month before Browne chose USC.

What would have happened if Browne went to Cal and Goff went to USC? I can almost guarantee Goff would have been forced to sit behind Cody Kessler. Do you think Lane Kiffin or Steve Sarkisian would have made an inexperienced Goff the starter over an entrenched Kessler? No way. Coaches do not like to make unorthodox decisions at quarterback.

And that is something for quarterbacks to remember. If simply playing is priority No.1, beware the USC’s of the world. Remember Mark Sanchez waited until his junior year to start. Fortunately for him, it worked out.

  1. Now the Blogger has taken to warning recruits not to consider USC. How much is ucla paying him under the table again? Was it John Wayne that said life is hard but it is even harder when you are stupid? Blogger, why do you cover the Trojans? Move on with your pathetic life. Give us a break.

  2. I love it when you dig deep and pull out these unrealistic hypotheticals – kinda like a digital colonoscopy.

  3. Lane Kiffen, and Steve Sarkisian were self proclaimed quarterback/offensive guru’s , but were actually two clowns, and Jared Goff would have never develop under them. Goff had the opportunity to start his development process under Jeff Tedford, who is actually a good coach, then Sonny Dykes took over and finished off the product.

    • I agree they were not really good ‘head coaches’ but there is ample evidence they are good at the offense/qback coaching;they still have much to learn about head coaching.

      • Fred’s right, two clowns who have no clue on how to develop anything, other than personal problems.

    • Fred, more likely than not, your statement is a stretch on reality. Tedford gave Kiffin his start in coaching, and Kiffin has managed to hang in there as OC with Saban.

If your statement is “dead-on”, then USC should definitely expect the worst at this time, because we know who the QB coach was during those Kiffin/Sark years.

Scott questions whether Goff would have ever started. I’m sure your recall that Kiffin, in particular, seemed determined NOT to start CK. And “determined” may understate Kiffin’s state of mind.

Kiffin also attempted to lure his mentor, Tedford, to USC for a significant job with the offense.

Sark is another matter, and yet, it may be the substance abuse that dramatically degraded his performance. Wouldn’t be a shock, but who knows?.

My opinion is that USC was never going to be great during those years. Orgeron, not Kiffin or Sark, came closest to realizing what potential there was. Not that Ed O was a superstar HC in the making. But Haden’s judgment to prefer Sark looks unfathomable in 2016. It looked dubious in 2013.

Scott would rather be provocative than industrious. Such is life.

That was then, this is now, and we shall see in short order whether Helton was hamstrung, or was a willing co-conspirator in the various decisions that look poor in hindsight.

Plus, we have to remember that the hindsight portfolio always outperforms.

  4. Wolf, did it ever occur to you that Goff’s parents were Cal graduates and his father played baseball at Cal? Could it be the reason he chose Cal was he knew he could move right in and start right away just like Rosen at UCLA? That’s the primary reason that Stanford did not offer Rosen in the first place. They knew he wanted to come in and play right away and not wait.

  5. This is true for any school and any QB considering a school has to know of the competition before he commits. I’d say 90% of the top flight QBs that commit to any school are influenced by who’s already there. Just a dumb hypothetical post.

    • The difference is USC is usually loaded 3 or 4 deep with quality quarterbacks as we saw when Matt Cassell never played behind Matt Leinart.

  6. fantastic insight wolfman, for all the jibber-jabber about “competing” for positions at Southern Cal, everyone since Petey has played it like an old grandma….very safe.

    #PlayItSafeU

ps- G.O.T. was totally INTENSE, wolfman!! Jon Snow goes the way of Sarkisian!! And the Red Woman, OMG!!! Do you think Layla Kiffin has one of those enchanted necklaces???

  7. If the blogger had a clue, and he doesn’t, he would have known that Goff had been going to Cal games since he was a little kid, he wasn’t going anywhere else.

  8. Goff made the right decision playing at Cal where he was going to be the man and no real competition for the starting position. USC was not going anywhere due to the sanction limitations and Max Browne had the #1 rating and did commit to USC. Goff would have been lost in the crowd and probably have transferred.

    • you are just encouraging him with this, his next post will be about the Baby Quarterback and then im done for the day

  9. It’s simply a function of Cal bringing in less talent year in and year out. If you’ve got a black hole at QB, then sure, the talented young buck will get the opportunity to prove himself. If you’re stacked at QB, that young hot prospect may not get that immediate chance. It’s one of the negatives of being such a successful program in recruiting. You might stick with a solid established player instead of taking that risk – and yes, it is a risk – with an unproven youngster. Not rocket science.

  10. I mean Kessler forgot 10 yards = a 1st down, so #Goff #top3 most likely starts over any #ClownU QB… .

    #10yards=1stdown

  11. I remember that day fondly when Browne committed to SC. I was at a wedding reception and checked my phone and seen the news. That seems like like it was 6-7 years ago. I thought he’d be on the field by now.

  12. I’m not so sure that he wouldn’t have started. I don’t think Lane Kiffen was ever high on Cody Kessler. He wanted Max Wittick to win the job but although Wittick had better natural ability, He wasn’t the competitor that Kessler was. Kessler didn’t have a great year in 2013 so I see no reason why Goff couldn’t have beat out Kessler in 2014. But I do agree that SC does seem to give the job quite often to the one who has waited his turn(Barkley was the exception) rather than to the best QB available at the time(ala Mark Sanchez).

  13. WoIfman!! As always providing the angles and perspectives that only an exceptional reporter like the WoIf can provide. In spite of your southern cal education, you come through time and time again! Asking questions that demand an answer that no rah rah wants to answer!

          • You mad Alvarado?? Your psycho ward past is showing! Just go get another burrito from the machine! Try paying the extra 25 cents for the guacamole! You’ll soon forget all about how terrible southern cal is!

By the way, when your former football HC were Kiffin and Sarkisian, you have no business calling anyone a clown!
