Mike Gillespie’s Continued USC Mastery

Mike Garrett fired USC baseball coach Mike Gillespie in 2006 and the Trojans continue to pay the price. Gillespie’s UC Irvine Anteaters defeated USC, 6-5, earlier this week.

That gave Gillespie a 14-4 record against the Trojans since he took over at UC Irvine.

    • I would give huge money to see Scooter ask one of his snarky questions to Gillespie. His look with have Scooter wetting his pants and running.

  1. One thing about this, Scooter, the thing that you have ignored for the last 10 years blogging about this, is that USC missed the post-season in four out of the last five years of Gillespie’s tenure. You had it out for Enfield after taking over a talent-barren program and posting two losing seasons (and you still are!), you complained to high heaven about Carroll’s last season, but Gillespie is/was untouchable?

Look, the decline of USC baseball was not the fault of Gillespie (who is a hall of fame coach) because the school essentially abdicated competing in baseball on a consistent basis, but there was “cause”, so to speak, to fire Gillespie because of his record over his last five years, which showed a clear downward trend.

The worst thing about the Gillespie firing was Chad Kreuter’s hiring. Because of the success of Carroll and Floyd, Garrett went into brain-dead mode and seemed to believe that the only qualification to coach at USC was having professional experience. Kiffin, O’Neil, Michael Cooper, Kreuter were all un/underqualified to coach, but they all had “professional” experience. And all four set their programs so far back they are still being repaired.

  2. Gillespie was obviously a good baseball coach and we’re definitely paying for it nowadays.

    • Got that right.
I’ll never forget that gutsy ‘steal home’ call.
Rod was only coach that was better.

        • Good!
My son says you can’t go wrong with it.

I will probably stick with Apple due to its supposedly taking less time to ramp up to knowledgeable user.

  3. When he can sell kids the glamor and excitement of Irvine, what can USC do?

      • The green lawns and orderly, well-laid streets have a beauty not unlike that of the baseball diamond itself.

  4. Father in law and client doing good things at the I..

Lol .Hey RENTS ..Your boy JACK is just like the other Bruins.. Not a top 10

  5. Hubbs is the worst. A pitching coach for many years, and his team can’t throw the ball straight. He has no idea on how to handle the bullpen. Walks galore, wild pitches, and hit batters. Why do you think Haden offered $1 million to the ex- Trojan coach and now ucla leader Savage which was rejected.
