USC Morning Buzz: Su’a Cravens Is On The Clock

USC linebacker Su’a Cravens is projected to be drafted today. Will he? Bovada just sent out an over/under on Myles Jack’s draft placement: 39.5.

    • TB, Happy to help you remember.
Myles Jack was a starting linebacker for UCLA who sustained what is apparently a career ending injury do to some sort of congenital defect in his knee. Mr. Jack was both offensive and defensive freshman of the year in the Pac 12 and undefeated against SoCal during his injury shortened career. It should be noted that his injury was accidentally inflicted by a team mate unlike the career ending injury sustained by Matt (who?) Barkley who was taken down like a tackling dummy by Anthony Barr during another UCLA victory.

        • I love it when little gutties go down by friendly fire. You don’t even need to hit ’em and they’re toast.

They say Flopper Jack is frantically distributing videos of him dunking as he’s in such a panic now that he’s a round 2 slipper.

        • Again, happy to help. UCLA is the premier athletic and academic institution in Los Angeles. UCLA is located in the most desirable location in the metropolitan Los Angeles area and has the most NCAA Championships of any University in the United States.

          • Lol.. Dying here LOL. How much you getting paid to troll 24/7 with that garbage BS.

          • Dream on Troll boy. USC leads ucla big-time in men’s sports championships, both conference and NCAA and USC is stronger academically and much richer financially. USC owns L.A. as usual.

Why you here? You just like getting your head beat in every day? Typical little gutty.

How’s your football and basketball programs? What’s your excuse this time?

          • man, the more things change the more they stay the same. Jack B still clinging to 1970.

          • Jackie,
I must say, based upon your posts, most could guess you probably aren’t commuting to JPL every morning to work unless you work in their cafeteria. When you say “USC is stronger academically” you take the next step and shout to the world you are a dull tool.

    • He’s the “student-athlete” that bolted off the UCLA campus like a bat out of hell 5 minutes after finding out he couldn’t play football there anymore.

  1. Poor “Floppin'” Myles, aka #1 Draft Bust, The Fall Guy, The Meniscus Man. We hardly knew ye.

    • Jack’s gonna be a very good value pick. If his knee holds up, someone’s gonna get first round talent for a bargain basement second price.

      • Ya, and if his knee doesn’t hold up, someone’s gonna get stuck. But his contract negotiations will reflect that and he has very little leverage.

        • Second round picks have no leverage. Under the new CBA, the rookie salaries are slotted. There will be little to no negotiations for second round picks.

          • Really, 2nd round picks have no negotiating room? Good for the NFL. But still bad for the NFL team that takes Jack if he can’t play.

          • First round picks don’t have that much leverage anymore. Everything is slotted. It’s why folks say that Tunsil, by dropping from say, 3rd to 13, lost as much as 7 million dollars.

It is called by some (me!) The Sam Bradford Rule. Back before the current CBA, there would be holdouts because everyone was trying to see who got paid and how much, and go from there. If a rush DE drafted 8th got $$$$, then the rush DE drafted 15th wanted $$$$ as well. So if a draftee was offered a contract that most other teams thought was too high (say a CB drafted 16th got a very generous contract, then a CB drafted 7th would want as much or more), you would have holdouts. And holdouts are problems, because your rookie comes into the season perhaps not in the best shape and perhaps not understanding scheme, terms, the playbook.

This is, of course a big issue if you draft a QB, who has the steepest learning curve to climb. When the Rams drafted Bradford, they didn’t want him to holdout, so they gave him a boatload of money, a record amount for a rookie. That set the ceiling for everyone else, and everyone’s salary, from the Bradford to people in the middle of second round was, according to the owner’s, inflated. It was a big reason for the 2011 lockout. Owners did not want to pay ever increasing salaries

There are negotiating points within slots, but, generally, the first person drafted gets the highest contract, and it goes down from there. The room for negotiation after the first round is generally more circumscribed.

          • I should also mention that inflated rookie salaries hurt established veterans, since it under Cap rules it means less money for vets. So they went along with this.

          • Well, look at it this way – he’s a way cheaper possible bust than Matty Leinart. And even with his knee, he still went 20 places before SC’s “best”.

        • He can get hurt in practice, drills and he’s done..A day late a dollar short..$6 million dollar mistake .

  2. If Carvens and the other athletes on this team had been coached by better coaching staffs than what we have seen here these last 7-some years, would their value be respected more by the NFL? When you do a crappy job in hiring a head coach and for the wrong reasons, this is what happens. You go cheap & you limit who you go after, the results will prove this out. Wow, does the USC administration think Ohio St, Alabama, Florida St, Oklahoma, Etc. are really stupid or what?

    • Cravens isn’t that big or fast – plain and simple. Everyone seems to love his instincts and tackling ability, so obviously, the coaching didn’t hurt him there.

Was Cravens suddenly gonna run a 4.5 if he were coached by Urban Meyer? Craven’s speed and size are his problems, not the coaches.

I’m as negative about Drunk Boy and Visor Boy as anyone, but I’m not gonna blame them for the NFL’s opinion on Cravens. If he hadn’t gone to USC, there’s just as much if not more chance he’d be drafted lower. The similar size LB who was already drafted from OHIO ST, Derron Lee, is a sub 4.5 guy. I’ll take Lee by a mile if I’m an NFL coach.

  3. What are there, about 10,000 college football players each year, and only a little more than 200 get drafted. That’s 2% of the entire pool, and of the 200 probably only 100 will make any money. That’s 1%.

So the dream of being a pro football player, and not having a backup plan (i.e. studying in school), has ruined many a young man.

  4. BREAKING NEWS;

Adam Shefter reporting Dr. James Andrew reported Myles “FREAKIN” Jack doesn’t need Microsurgery, of course a day late and millions later, I just hope CLE passes on him or #GB #MIN move up…

          • He was supposedly waiting for a doctor’s approval. You can’t make this stuff up. Poor Floppin’ Jack lost 25 mil because his doctor was a day late. That’s the land of the little gutties for ya.

          • 25mm, MINIMUM? Intersting, especially since the first pick is expected to only get $25mm. So assuming MJ was going number 1 (he wasn’t) he would be getting paid ~$0 this year, according to your calculations. Again, interesting.

If I recall Jackie boy you’re a lawyer by trade? That would make since. I remember when I was a VP at GS and we would let the analysts give Partners at Cravath and Skadden math tests during bakeoffs, then we’d go with Wachtell, because Lloyd always said “never trust a schlub whose paid by the hour”. You silly paper pushers always had issues with differentiating between diluted shares and basic shares, I mean what’s the problem, it’s basic math?

          • It’s literally just a game dude. Since when are there redlines on a sports smack board? Defeats the whole purpose of Trojans v Trolls/blogger.

          • While FlopJack was falling, Dumber in Westwood was stalling, trying to pull his pants back on. Finally, he came up with some so-called doctor’s approval, then he broke into song, now that FlopJack’s sunk.

        • Jackie B. got owned by me so hard yesterday she went back to 1967.. .lol

          #BabyLB is the on the clock… .

  5. Alabama and Ole Miss are about to feel the wrath of the NCAA. It’s only a matter of time.

      • Ole Miss has been begging to get caught. Especially they’re cocky head coach who said ” I wish the NCAA would investigate my program”.
