In case you missed it, All-American offensive tackle Pete Adams carries his dog off the field during the 1972 season, likely in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. The stray dog showed up during the year and Adams brought it to practices and team meetings.
It might be the huge shoulder pads they wore then, but that’s what an Offensive Tackle is supposed to look like. How big was Peter Adams?
Pete ,for the era was good size.maybe 6’4″ 260-270. He grew up San Diego, from my era, funny thing was seeing him at beach with a long board.
Think he played San Diego JC first. That era of football on west coast was an era effected greatly by the culture change of the time.Vietnam war, hippie movement and so much more influenced us.I had two friends who were offered by USC,who both had brothers killed in war. despite excellent grades ,one never went to college, moved to Canada. The other took a year off to cope, went to JC,then for two years played at USC.
Cool story about seeing him on a long board. My dad and two uncles all were drafted together to Vietnam. My dad never talks about it. But to your point I have a lot of respect for those men of that Era who were shipped out when they had other lanes like college scholarships line up. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.
