USC Morning Buzz: Tate Martell Prepares For Third Commitment

MARTELL.APTate Martell, aka the Pocket Quarterback; aka the 5-10 wunderkind, officially decommitted from Texas A&M on Wednesday night. Was anyone surprised? MartellĀ committed to Washington (and Steve Sarkisian) before he entered eighth grade. Then he committed to Texas A&M last August. USC was in the mix before he committed to A&M.

It sounds like Ohio State, UCLA and Cal might be more likely destinations for college decision No. 3. One can only hope. USC’s been acting a little desperate for a 2017 QB so who knows. I can’t see Martell happy sitting behind a 6-4 Sam Darnold though. Let’s just hope there isn’t a fourth commitment. As Lane Kiffin says, commitments are meaningless. And I can only see drama wherever he actually enrolls.

  1. Some schools welcome and
create drama, that would be USC, while others don’t welcome or create it, that would be UCLA.

    • Lol.. You had plenty of drama!
Kettle bell University Ring a bell? Mr P Diddy
      Snoop’s kid quitting
      Coach Klemm
      Myles Jack leaving the program
      Adams with Uber

      May I go on!

Your excuse for a basketball coach and finally, Dan G failing to comply with the Pac12

      How about more?

LAPD and the LACSD spent more time on campus than they ever did at USC in 3 years!

      • You forgot the face caressing incident during the Oregon beatdown at the Rose Bowl.

      • Whatever dirty Klemm did is still a giant ucla secret. The bruins like it that way. They’re the secrecy kings and the image queens.

        • And the longer Klemm is at UCLA the chances are greater for him to make them look bad. It’s pretty crazy that he’s still on staff.

        • No secret, Jackie. UCLA suspended Klemm and self-reported the incident to the NCAA .

I know you don’t recognize either the concept of suspending coaches (even when they are drunk in public) or self-reporting but you may remember the NCAA.

        • Remember when SC got hit with the worst sanctions ever for cheating across the board? Yeah, me too. And remember which school has received major cheating sanctions pretty much EVERY decade since the NCAA formed? Yeah, me too!

      • “Kettle bell University Ring a bell? Mr P Diddy

        Coach Klemm
        Myles Jack leaving the program
        Adams with Uber” … .

And not one person got sentenced to 6yrs. in the big house… .

        #MICDrop

        • He was NOT a member of the football program. .Rim Dog! #pickedupmicand clubbedyouonthehead

      • Almost forgot about the kettlebells – only if that were on video, it would be worth a fortune!

    • What about Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden, Angela Davis, and tokyo Rose creating commotion with cheating, protesting, and being a traitor?

      • Wow, another bad flashback from a Trojan. Two from the 70’s and one from 1940. Usually it’s Figgy who was deeply scarred by basketball’s greatest coach. Did you and Figgy do the brown acid together at Woodstock?

        • Trogans have no choice but to live in the past. The current and the future are too depressing. When they can’t cheat, they can’t win!

      • John Wayne, Jukebox war hero, wipes out a whole a WW II Japanese Div. single handly with just 3 bullets and a dud hand grenade on a Hollywood and Vine set.
        .

    • UCLA has plenty of drama.
The difference between the bruins and the Trojans is nobody gives a damn about the bruins outside of Westwood.

      • The truth is nobody cares about the little gutties in football because they’ve never won anything. They get any kind of a streak on USC and they’re jumping for joy because in football – ucla’s just a small bowl school. And even in those, they have a losing record. They’ve lost a whopping eight crappy bowl games since 2000 alone.

        • But UCLA 10 – bozo u 7. UCLA wins its 10th WP NC and 113th NC.

Mushy you’re welcome to bozo u’s ballot box, monopoly $$$$ FB NC claims. The NCAA doesn’t recognize them either.

    • You need to worry about your own problems. Like turning that 0-4 record in football and basketball into a W…

    • How about when the handicapped were robbed of their parking privileges by rotten bRuins?

      • Hey, you’re getting closer, that one’s from only 20 years ago.

        • Be careful, because YoYo can recount a 1922 bozo u game vs Cumberland St play by play.

          #bozou’s1922cupcakeschedule

        • Problem is, they are still doing it. Nothing ever changes in westwood.

  2. Hmmm, usually you jump at any chance to badmouth Kiffin but here you quote him favorably. Is this a sign of the apocalypse?!

  3. Tate might be a good QB but he is short for a pocket passer. A higher than normal percentage of his passes will get knocked down as Haden & Booty passes did. Helton needs to look elsewhere…

  4. Another Lane Killin name drop. I’m confused do you hate the guy or live him?

    • An asst coach tweeted out some nasty remarks, since deleted, regarding this kids decommitt. Two other kids saw it and also decomitted.

Memo to asst coach at A&M, don’t tweet or use social media, it’s a waste of time, kinda like this blog is getting to be.

      • he should be fired, i dont care who he is. if sumlin’s not careful, he’ll be coaching at navarro jc

      • Didn’t our blogger make a big deal out of USC’s not going after Sumlin hard enough? Sounds like a SW position.

        • Yes he did – then soon after Sumlin tweets or twats or whatever he did and told the world that he almost pulled a “Sark after dark” – not a bright guy, and look at his protege manziel, that guy is now a joke with no discipline

        • I had the same thought about Scott’s “hire-Sumlin series” when the A&M issues began about six months ago.

On the other hand, the hire made was Sark.

If there is a generalization, it’s that identifying the right coach to continue/resurrect USC’s FB tradition is VERY difficult and uncertain–just as Haden has said. That is material in understanding USC’s preference for hiring current/former assistants.

It takes a lot of timing luck to capture Meyer on the rebound from a mid-life crisis, or Saban realizing that he #1 core competence IS RECRUITING (his words to the President of U. Alabama); as we recognize, he knows a lot about a lot w/r/t FB and organization).

I thought that might happen for USC with Chip Kelly (you don’t like him, I know), but, he wasn’t really done with the NFL.

I agree with you that USC’s obstacle right now is developing its players fully, especially OL and DL, and scheming to the players’ core competences. Everything else is footnotes–open for debate, but why debate footnotes?

          Win, and they will come.

  5. 3 of the last 5 blogger’s posts are about Cal State LA. Did this turn into a CSULA blog and I missed it ?

  6. Another post about a kid who
    A) Isn’t a player at USC
    B) Isn’t committed to USC
    C) Isn’t interested in going to USC

Maybe he’ll go play basketball at Cal State LA and we’ll hear about that for years to come

  7. Our blogger thinks Kiffin supports his theory that commitments are worthless. Ya sure, Kiffin was an RC at USC. He spent his daily life trying to get commits.

But our blogger only thinks USC commitments are worthless. If other schools, like ALA, get commits, they are big deals and often signs of Trojan trouble or mistakes.

  8. The school with 75 WINS this decade .. Sure, Real dynasty! #micdropped #hateUcla

  9. ESPN College Game Day producer tweeted out which game should they go to in week 1

    USC/Alabama in Arlington, TX
    OR
    LSU/Wisconsin at Lambeau Field

    ???

    SC/Bama all the way.

      • What have you EVER WON IN YOUR LIFETIME AS A BRUIN FANS???????????????????

        LOL!

          • Get the BLEEP out of here! I’m assuming you’re in the age of 42-50. Let’s say for argument sake that you’re 100 years old just like the conference. The fans of UCLA have nothing to look back to or forward to except more depression, and that’s normal for you fans. I’m 33. I lived through some earlier Rose Bowl winning years, then losing Memphis, tying San Diego St., losing to Fresno St, and even losing to Wimpwood 8 years straight. We know what happened later with Pete. The rest is history…again, I asked you “what have you ever wondered in your lifetime as a Bruin fan and you said nothing. Let’s just say we’re on two different planets when it comes to college football.

  10. He’s kind of small. He’s got a reputation of being mobile but he only gained a little over 400 yards rushing whereas Jack Sears gained over 800 yards. Before I offer him I would wait and see whether he grows a little bit in his senior year and also how well he does this year without Tyjohn Lindsey who is one of the best receivers in the country, who transferred to Corona Centennial.

  11. This guy is 5.11 on stilts !

Maybe that works at the High School level but “not” High Level College Football !!

Fran (The Man) Tarking-Tan did it 40 years ago but I doubt that even Fran could do it today, not with 6.5 behemoths up and in his face, and not to mention the current speed of the Linebackers and DBacks !!!

We are stacked at QBack, let this one go !

    DLineOn

  12. If Tate Martell signs with any of the schools mentioned, a 4 or 5 star 6″4 220 lbs quarterback will probably sign the following year , and bury him deeper into the depth chart. ..lol So he better not get to big for his britches …lol

  13. Did you know that USC Football has been on NCAA probation for 25% of its existence? That’s right, one out of every 4 years since the NCAA was formed. The only school worse is SMU. Congrats, Trogies!
