Clay Helton Backs Cody Kessler

KESSLER.STANFORDThe Cleveland Plain-Dealer interviewed USC coach Clay Helton about Cody Kessler and Helton predicts success for his quarterback.

“I think Coach (Hue) Jackson’s going to be the guy that’s the smart one down the road here. I think Cody will be somebody that everybody looks up two or three years from now and says ‘wow, where did this guy come from?’ ”

  1. ….was I watching games Helton wasnt….what am I missing…time after time it wasnt that I said Kessler doesnt have the talent…that would be one thing…and is….but time and time again I said to myself…Kessler JUST DOESNT GET IT….he has ZERO football smarts and is NOT a winner…minor details but they dont add up to making it in the NFL….

    • J.A.M. What you say may be 100% correct. Even if it is , Helton said the only thing he could say. Taking the cynical view that he doesn’t believe a word he said, he loses nothing by saying positive things about Kessler. And by remaining loyal he sends the message to other kids that he will be there for them. Nothing to lose by being magnanimous

    • Helton makes himself look like an idiot by making stupid comments about Kessler’s potential in the NFL. He has no potential and probably will never take a snap in the NFL. I sat and watched this fool for three years as QB. What a waste of time for Browne and Darnold to have sat on the bench while chubby little Kessler just messed around on the field and could never get his act together. So glad he is gone.

  2. My question is “why isn’t Clay Helton going after Ryan Kelley from Arizona”? He’s available. He just de-committed from Oregon. Just looking at his films, this kid is phenomenal. He’s got a shotgun for an arm. He’s very accurate and he can run like a deer. He reminds me a lot of an Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady who can run. That may be an overstatement but he really is good and as far as I can see, SC hasn’t even offered him. You can’t wait forever for this kid. He looks like the ultimate dual threat QB. I thought that’s what they were looking for.

    • Did they say why he decommitted from Oregon? Maybe Arizona would want him.

      • I have no idea why he de-commited. It seems like Oregon would be the perfect place for him. I was reading that 2 hours ago he commited to ASU so maybe he just wanted to stay closer to home. When you watch him on film he looks unbelievable but if you look at his stats they are not as good as Jack Sears, who USC is going after bigtime. Sears really looks like another great QB. He threw for 2700 yards last year with 37 TD’s and only 2 interceptions as a junior. He also ran for 862 yards with a 7.7 average and 9 TD’s. So maybe SC has just decided to go after him 100%.

  3. Herad on the transom –

….the Trojans will feature a new quarterback. Max Browne is Cody Kessler’s
likely successor, although Sam Darnold pressed him in the spring.
“That’s what happens when you sign the best of the best … it turns into a
heck of a competition,” Helton said during the Pac-12 coaches’ media
    teleconference.

Hey how come there is never a ‘competition at bel-air tech for QB or any position?

Because THEY CAN’T AND NEVER SHALL RECRUIT IN DEPTH
