Sports Arena Officially Closes

SPORTS.ARENA.ORIGINALToday is the last day of the Sports Arena. With that in mind, here is the original plan for the arena designed by Stiles and Robert Clements in a 1955 rendering for the Los Angeles Examiner. The biggest difference is the original arena was rectangular instead of circular.

UPDATED: Here is a photo gallery of the Sports Arena through the years.

  1. $200 mil from Larry Ellison for the Inst. of Transformative Medicine he’s also giving the commencement speech tomorrow. It’s going to be over on the ‘tony’ west side.

  2. That architectural design is a telling example of the lack of functional use created by modern art.

    A flashlight w.o. the batteries.

  3. I only remember that dump for hosting the Sunkist track meet back in the day .

    • I only recall that ‘dump’ as having outstanding lines of sight. Vastly superior to that of the Forum, Pauley, and the most disgusting views of them all…Staples.
Of course all the really cool people abhor-ed the dispensing of wine that came from a box and were forced to make-do with the legendary Sports Arena hot dog, the ‘Say No’ hot dog, or those unpalatable Gray Lady bacon wrapped hot dogs.
Life was tough back then…no amenities, just raw sports.
      How gauche!

BTW, Colli parking is going to be a blast in years to come. But not to panic…we acquire a redundundundant soccer facility.
      Happy days are here again!

    • I also remember John Rudometkin & Gordon Martin and President Kennedy in the “dump” – life was good then.
But Larry Harris’ comment regarding sightlines is so true.
No local place of decent scale allows for anything close to those perspectives.
