The Once-Proposed Sports Arena

SPORTS.ARENA.1956This is the original 1956 version of the Los Angeles Sports Arena designed by the firm of Stiles and Robert Clements. It’s got the airplane hangar look but I wonder if it would have held up better than the circular model did that was eventually constructed.

  1. Beancounters loved the ‘hip moderne’ – the lack of any real effort design wise. It meant inexpensive materials and both cheap and easy to build. No need for marble, etched or wrought iron metal oh no – the siren call of the bauhaus…”I give you peanut butter!…Bologna!…..Pimento Loaf!”

That thing wouldn’t have lasted through the 65′ riots.

  2. Sure, look at all the other mid century airplane hanger arenas still kicking around today. That thing was woefully out of date when the Clippers played there.

  3. USC defeated MI in women’s water polo – USC 9 MI 6! Onto the final!

    • Yeah – they got their ‘mojo’ from the Pan Pacific but this time with lots of aluminum and foam plastic that those lazy designers and budget busting bean counters adore – what I love the best is the ‘bleeding’ rebar.

Man now that is a sign of a well built structure.

      • LA City builds these venues and then watches them deteriorate (like the Coli). Amazing.

        • Uh oh the rah rahs like Jacqui the trans won’t like that heresy. We are supposed to pretend the Coliseum is sa state of the art facility.

          • Course the Rose Bowl is state of the art for 1910. Love those splinters in my butt.

          • Jacqui the trans spoke for all fellow ruin fans and said they all love it than Chianti Dan signed a 30 year lease at that old dump in the Arroyo Seco. Who would want to drive 6 miles and play in a $3 billion state of the art stadium in Inglewood when you can drive 20 miles one way to Pasdena?

  4. How are the Lady Yoga’s doing against truly ‘The Effete’ in women’s water polo….bel-air tech’s chance for meaning is on the line against truly ‘The Effete’……..

  5. Breaker breaker!…..

    bel-air tech lost to ‘the effete male’….. Yogas 4 Effete Male/Female 9

UISC vs. ‘The Effete Male’ (well in this case ‘female’) for the NCAA Women’s Water Polo
