A Modest Sports Arena Proposal

SPORTS.ARENA_.1961-62The Sports Arena, which officially closed last week, was designed by Welton Becket. If you never heard of him, you probably see his buildings every day. Among his famous creations are the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles, Capitol Records building in Hollywood (pictured), Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles and Pauley Pavilion at UCLA.

His son, also named Welton Becket, has asked me to help publicize his idea to incorporate a part of the South Facade of the Sports Arena into the new soccer stadium that will be built. Among the parts Becket would like to see saved is the “terrazzo floor with large letters,” which is pictured below. It seems like a reasonable proposal to remember an important building in the history of Los Angeles.

  1. The facility is horrible. Really, it always has been. No reminders of the dump, please.

  2. I was thinking more along the lines of burn it down & salt the earth so nothing can ever grow there again.

  3. Not all history is worth remembering, let alone commemorating. Mr. Becket designed some LA architectural landmarks, but the Sports Arena is not one of them. It would have been an eyesore even in East Germany. Tear it down and let’s move on. Count me out of this cause.

  4. The father did design some unique structures now as to the son who contacted you what?
