USC Morning Buzz: The Reggie Bush Fallout Continues

It probably struck some as self-serving that Reggie Bush acted like he wasn’t treated right by USC considering the severe sanctions suffered by the football program. And the fact Bush never lifted a finger to help the university during the NCAA’s investigation. One could say the same about O.J. Mayo and basketball, by the way, but no one cares about basketball.

Bush’s interview with Colin Cowherd, whose USC obsession actually proved worthy of something this time, came across as another example of an entitled, spoiled athlete. That said, USC coach Clay Helton’s made a strong push to welcome Bush back and made him welcome at the Pac-12 title game. That made Bush’s stand-offish attitude seem odd with Cowherd.

Petros Papadakis continued to criticize Bush during Wednesday’s Petros and Money show.

“I am still incensed . . . to sit there and act as a victim,” Papadakis said. “This guy could have helped alleviate a lot of those sanctions just by cooperating. I believe even Marcus Allen called him personally (to speak to the NCAA). He has never taken one ounce of responsibility for what happened at USC.”

  1. The main reason the NCAA nailed SC was that Mike Garret (another inexperienced AD) refused to cooperate for four years. Reggie still looks bad and does NOT deserve to come back.

    • BS. The NCAA itself said that USC cooperated. What he also did was to say that he felt that there was unfairness, agendas and inaccuracies, something that turned out to be proven through the McNair lawsuit. Garrett’s response was downright timid in comparison to Ole Miss, Ohio St., Penn St., Miami, Florida, North Carolina, etc. etc. And those schools, by taking a stronger, more confrontational line won out.

      • Yeah, sure. That’s why it took 4 years to get penalized. Garrett’s response was mild because he knew he caused it all and was on the hot seat. Quick question: What’s the color of the sky in your world?

  2. The fall out continues cause Wolfman and Petros continue to beat a dead horse. 99 days until college football. Alabama offered and 8th grader today so get ready for baby QB post with lots of Kiffin delight.

  3. OK, it’s officially a dead horse now.

They’re out to get you, better leave while you can
Don’t want to be a boy, you want to be a man
You want to stay alive, better do what you can
So beat it, just beat it

  4. He could have stated the deal his parents were appearing to be making in their lives with some agent, had NOTHING to do with SC. Mike Garret knew SC was not involved as did the coaching staff…when somebody like the Govt or a governing body is out to get you…they will by hook or by crook, kangaroo courts work that way, they think the end justifies their means…facts come out sooner or later…SC should have gone after the crooks, still can.The whole thing was obvious .

    • USC won’t do squat, you think the Greek is going to fight ? Swann ? Not a chance.

McNair is going to expose the NCAA and get paid very well in the end, not bad for a dog killer.

      • That’s exactly what’s going to happen Johnny. Spot on, and fight on John.

  5. If USC and Clay Helton are reaching out to Reggie Bush after all the negativity he brought to the school, then why wouldn’t he feel entitled ? If the University doesn’t care, then why should we ? Bush has been on a pedestal since he exploded on the scene at SC , and was never made accountable for anything, so I understand his attitude.

    • don’t forget a lot of kids are looking at SC BECAUSE of Bush. isn’t that ironic? too many times recently you hear the kids (adoree for one) talk about how they fell in love with the school because of reggie bush’s performance on the field. i’m really hoping the fragile relationship between the university and bush can be healed. other than that pitch against Texas, he was one of the best i ever saw…

  6. Whether Bush’s testimony was helpful is another story but Reggie Bush did appear and give testimony. Scott Wolf thinks it is long enough ago to just make up stuff and see if it will stick. The McNair case showed that the NCAA committee under Dee and company were dishonest, not driven by facts, had an agenda, lied and covered up their lying. Just as importantly, if one takes the story that the NCAA was trying to sell, we can see how they ruled absolutely differently in the Cam Newton case, and his school and conference commissioner especially were pushing back hard. The NCAA is a racket, and big time college sports are corrupt, and the sky is blue…

    • When did Bush appear and give testimony? Reggie had his lawyer file a motion in 2008 to keep any testimony he would give from the NCAA and then settled the case with Lloyd Lake in 2010 before giving any testimony. He refused to cooperate with the NCAA all through the scandal and allowed USC to take the fall.

      • Reggie Bush Reggie had his lawyer file a motion in 2008 to keep any testimony secret so that his testimony could not be used. He did not refuse to cooperate, the NCAA refused to cooperate. And then he simply appeared with his lawyer and gave a statement explaining that he could not cooperate without confidentiality. It was later that he signed the confidentiality agreement which prevented any future discussions but it came to the same end. The NCAA had its chance and frankly USC would have done better to have argued for his right to confidentiality.

  7. while Petors and wolfman are right on target (as usual) on this subject, aside from not cooperating with the NCAA, we would be remiss to not mention Reggie also had AMPLE opportunity to simply pay Lake the money he rightfully owed him and made this all go away. he had every opportunity to behave like half a man, and failed miserably at each turn.

and for the improbable remaining Reggie apologists, remember, there is NO DISPUTE he took HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS in loot. including tickets, cash, cars and clothes. the sanctions were not commensurate with the degree of graft in this case. ESPECIALLY given the coaching staff’s complicity.

  8. The only difference between Bush’s Parents and Cam Newton’s dad shopping his son to the highest bidder is that Newton was protected by the SEC while USC got nailed. People still drinking the NCAA kool-aid like Petros believe Reggie Bush is the biggest POS in history.

  9. I don’t think it’s fair to put OJ Mayo in the same category. If anything, SC does owe OJ Mayo an apology. The NCAA found no wrongdoing in the OJ Mayo case and OJ conducted himself with class– and even attended class– during his one season at SC. When SC self imposed and on the basketball program it looked very much like Garrett et al were throwing the basketball program under the bus because that had recently worked for Ohio State. Nothing that has been revealed since that time has indicated anything else.

    • By Jove, I think you’ve got it!

On 2nd thought, I know you’ve got it.
Prior to OJ appearing on the scene, my favorite SC hoopster was Harold. Number 23 is now a close 2nd. I have yet to see any athlete, Frosh thru Senior, display more maturity than Mayo. If there are any doubts, just check with my man ‘Pink’ (AKA Floyd). At times during games, it appeared that Tim was actually receiving fatherly deportment guidance from number 32.

  10. Poor Reggie. He got his Heisman stripped, was removed from the record books and kicked off campus for good. That takes some doing. It’s so funny. It’s like he’s been totally erased, except for the film clips. The ghost of #5, truly one of the most amazing CFB players ever to grace the gridiron.

Clearly, he could have avoided most all this mess. All he had to do was co-op with the NCAA behind the scenes, then go very public with a few PR driven self-serving, specific statements, completely denying USC’s involvement and crucifying convict and blackmailer Lloyd Lake. He’d still have his Heisman (probably 70% of those winners were on the take at one time or another), his step-dad and mom would probably still be married and he’d still be revered by those who resent that he sold USC down the river. He could of course have paid off Lake with his newfound pro riches and we’d all still be living in La La Land.

In the end, USC only screwed Bush one time and that was when Carroll kept him off the field against Texas at the end in USC’s biggest coaching blunder ever. The fact Carroll decided not to use him as even a decoy in motion to the right (or left for that matter) is one of history’s most bizarre conundrums.

I really couldn’t care less if Reggie comes back aboard. So what. I just hope that if it ever happens, he publicly apologizes for bringing USC down (will never happen), because that’s exactly what he did. All he had to do was publicly say McNair didn’t know diddly and that neither he nor his parents ever spoke with McNair about his parents’ deal with the convict. The Dog Killer had the guts to do what USC didn’t and as a result will be compensated very handsomely whenever his lawyers are done torturing the NCAA.

In the meantime, this year’s team should be very interesting.

    • How much do you think Bush would have had to pay, including the confi?

  11. 5-star Alabama commit Offensive Tackle Alex Leatherwood from Florida told Tee Martin he will attend the USC Rising Stars Camp this summer. Read about it on TOS. Kid is feeling USC and we are gaining big momentum with the big fella. Reel’em in Tee!

    • That’s Awesome!
Now, if you can just find a way to keep him from watching the SoCal Alabama Game, you’ve got a real shot!
When you say “feeling USC” do you mean the buzz surrounding a program with first year head coach and new QB ranked 21 spots behind Bama?

      • JM,
You sound like Safer in Wimpwood. Jealousy’s never been in your character.

        • You’re right SB, I was out of line with that comment. Better to let unfounded pre-season optimism reign throughout the off-season in both camps.
I’ll save my comments for Reggie and those that will use him to recruit.

          • Hey Owns just how many phony id’s do you have?

Time for the guard change at the sarcophagus

  12. I’ts funny how bush takes most of the blame, but Garrett,NCAA are never mentioned and Petros clearly has some kind of issue about USC!
